Renteria is now available...

With Maddon going to the Cubs, that leaves Renteria without a job. What do people think about him as a potential manager for next year? He was hired by the cubs (presumably) to usher in the next wave of young players, so it only follows that at least one organization thinks that he was suited for that situation. And, the Twins find themselves in the same situation, with the next wave of (hopefully) core players debuting last year. Plus, he's Hispanic (Mexican-American, to be specific), which might be helpful with so many big prospects on the twins having Hispanic origins. I'm not sure if he speaks Spanish, though, but I would guess that he does. He may be at a disadvantage compared to other applicants, though, as he probably has less time to study up on the Twins. I wonder if Terry would delay the decision a bit to give Renteria a good interview. Thoughts?

I don't know much about him.....my main thought is that the sooner the better, since I'd (if I was GM) the new manager to be involved in setting the strategy for FA, which starts very soon......so if this is possible, they might want to move a bit faster on this than they have up until now (from what we can tell from the outside).

If Terry Ryan is true to his public reaction after Maddon came on the market, then, of course, the due diligence on Renteria should already be completed, and an interview invite is at the very least, obligatory- and hopefully has already transpired.  Renteria is bilingual and would be an excellent candidate, as his credentials and qualifications match the other candidates.

I expect the Twins to be more involved in a trade for a pitcher and maybe sign Neshek who has ties here than to really go big in FA.  There is not much for the Twins to really go after outside of another starting pitcher and maybe a reliever or OF this offseason.  The roster is a lot more settled than the last few years.

Renteria is well-liked and respected in Chicago, unlike every other Cubs manager in the last decade or more.  The feeling here, aside from the giddiness about Maddon, is that Renteria's a good manager and he got a raw deal.  I'd certainly give him an interview.

Is he available? Does he lose his salary if he signs on as a manager with someone else? Will he stay in the Cubs organization in some capacity because they are paying him, still?

He declined to stay in the Cubs org.

Don't know on your other questions but since manager's contracts are guaranteed, I'd bet he gets to keep it regardless of what he does.

Player contracts are guaranteed and if a team (NYY!) dumps a player (Justice) with guaranteed money to another team (A's) that contract follows him--but the money comes from the original team (NYY).  I would guess that that is what happens with a manager--though there can be a negiotiated buyout, which would enable the manager to sign a new contract with his new employer and keep the settlement.

He'd be a decent candidate, but he doesn't excite me any more than either Molitor or Lovullo, so I'm not going to get worked up over it if the Twins don't rush to bring him in.

And I don't see why his heritage is relevant.  Is there a track record of players from Venezuela and DR performing better under managers of Mexican descent?

Bruce Bochy was born in France and grew up in the US.  He's had a fair few guys from Latin America on his roster (Sandoval, Pagan, Perez, Blanco, etc.) and I'd say the results haven't been too shabby.

Just find a guy that's good at the job.
