Jim Mandelaro from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle writes that Red Wings manager Gene Glynn will interview for the vacant Minnesota Twins job.

Per his article:

A source within the Minnesota Twins' organization confirms the club will interview Red Wings manager Gene Glynn in the upcoming weeks for its managerial vacancy.

Also in the article, it mentions that Glynn will be a bench coach in the Venezuela Winter League:

Glynn leaves Saturday for Venezuela, where he will be a bench coach for the Bravos de Margarita on Margarita Island. He was coaching in Venezuela three years ago when the Twins flew him back to interview for the Red Wings vacancy, and they will do the same thing when it's time to interview him for the big-league job.

I still prefer an "outsider" but the more interviews the better -- a broad search sounds good,

Sorry I missed seeing Seth's thread.

Oops, sorry I didn't see this,

The broader the search the better IMO as long as it isn't just going through the motions.

Glynn is a legit candidate (or should be)... as MWW says, he's done a lot with not a lot of prospects. His roster hasn't been  consistent at all. He's had quite a bit of big league coaching time. He's been in scouting so he knows the details to look at. I think he should be part of the staff regardless of who the manager is.

Someone mentioned in another thread that Glynn had ties to Joe Maddon - they worked together at some point?

Glynn was a scout for the Rays before managing Rochester

hmm - I was thinking that the Twins would be announcing the new manager before this interview seems to be taking place..

Why?  Terry Ryan stated at the Gardy Firing press conference that they would look both internally and externally.  That takes time.  Given they didn't have the next manager already lined up, a month seems like a reasonable timeframe to me.

I agree that a month is reasonable - and honestly, I think they should take as much time as it takes to find the right person for the job. I just got the impression from the media reports that it was going to be a short process.

On the other hand, if Molitor or Mientkiewicz are the leading candidates, the Twins can take their time. It's not like those two guys are going to take another job in the meantime.

Should have them before FA starts.....so Ryan and the manager can be on the same page. Before that, it only matters if you lose out on a guy you want while going through the process.

I always thought Gene Glynn would make a good bench coach for the next Twins manager. He's worked with a good deal of the current 25 man roster, he's had past success and seems to be well regarded amongst his players. Of course, those qualities could point to a good big league manager - I've just always had a hunch that he'd end up as the bench coach.

There has been a little bit of shuffling going on already, and it seems like Mientkiewicz is moving up (how far up is still a question), so the managers up and down the system could be packing their bags. Glynn being given a shot as the manager or even just a bench coach seems like it is worth considering for the Twins.

Were there any good tidbits from the beat reporters while Glynn was in the Twins dugout as a September coaching call-up?

The only reason I would care if the Twins had a manager lined up before free agency started was if they thought they needed one to entice a particular free agent.  Say if Yasmani Tomas would be more inclined to play here if his manager was Sandy Alomar Jr.

Not to knock Glynn, or Mientkiewicz and Molitor for that matter, but I'm waiting for Ryan to interview someone not already in the Twins' employ.

The recent mention of the Orioles' John Russell as a candidate reminds me that even a month may be too short.  I don't know the protocol of approaching another team's coach, but if it's a no-no to do it even informally while a team is still in the postseason then Terry Ryan is about the last GM I'd expect to violate a gentlemen's agreement among his peers (it might even be written down somewhere :) ).  With all the red tape involved in doing an interview and eventually closing the deal, mid-November wouldn't mean anything has hit a snag, though of course it will be nice if the decision is settled sooner.

Are there still any hoops a team has to jump thru, i.e. number of candidates, they have to at least interview? If the Twins had just fired Gardy before the end of the season and put Molitor, say, in place...and if that is what they wanted, do you have to do a formal job announcement, interview, and then hire? I'm sure the Twins would like an idea of where theya re headed before the organizational meetings next week, when they will definitely discuss field staff throughout the system, minor league player needs, and the active roster.
