Starting Pitching: 2015-16 Twins and Recent AL Pennant Winners

What do the Twins need to win the pennant in 2015 or 2016?   Well, several things. But the biggest deficiency of the current 2013 Twins team is starting pitching. The starters' ERA of 5.35 ranks last in the AL and last in the majors. The Twins have just 2 of the 45 pitchers in the AL with enough innings to qualify for the ERA leader board. One of the two is Scott Diamond, who is ranked 45th among the 45 with an ERA of 5.52 (and who just snuck in with 88 innings over the Twins' 87 games as

Trade Talk: Correia and Pelfrey

The Twins signed to veteran back of the rotation starters last winter. Is it possible they might flip them in a midseason trade?   Kevin Correia whose best skill might be his reliable health has performed at an ERA+ of 99 (essentially league average) this year. Mike Pelfrey is coming off injury and started poorly. He needs to put up a string of good starts in order to show that he is healthy. Neither player has a contract that is going to scare off a team.   Earlier I look at previous LOOGY trad

Twins Birthdays--July 10

Also posted at wgom.org   Marty Cordova (1969) Outfielder Marty Cordova played for the Twins from 1995-1999. Born and raised in Las Vegas, he was drafted by Minnesota in the tenth round in 1989. He was young and took a few years to get going, but hit .341 with 28 homers for Class A Visalia in 1992. He stumbled a little when promoted to AA the next year, but came back with a bang, hitting .358 with 19 homers and an OPS of 1.018 for AAA Salt Lake in 1994. He was the Twins’ starting left fielde

Q & A With Kernels' Pitcher Steve Gruver

It's the top of the seventh inning and his team is leading by two runs. There are two outs, but the bases are loaded with opposing base runners.   It's the kind of situation the best relief pitchers almost seem to relish coming in to face.   Lefty Steve Gruver and right-hander Tyler Jones have been among the most reliable bullpen arms in the Midwest League this season and have presented a formidable lefty-righty combination out of the Kernels bullpen.   http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-

Trade Talk: Brian Duensing

One of the players this board has discussed trading is Brian Duensing. The thought is other teams might look to him as a left handed LOOGY.   His line 5.06 ERA, 41g, 32in, 29k, 14bb (over his career left handed hitters have a .580 OPS)   Why trade him? Brian is 30. He will be eligible for arbitration next year. He would likely be non-tendered. Caleb Thielbar appears to be the better option with Pedro Hernandez providing depth.   Why keep him? He certainly isn’t at peak value now and has never b

Review of Rock Cats 7/8 Game

I went to see the final game of the Rock Cats’s series in Portland on Monday. Because I was only watching one game, didn’t see BP or fielding drills, and am not a professional scout I am not making any conclusions. My purpose was more to provide details that cannot be found in a boxscore as well as a very modest scouting report. I focused on Sano, Rosario, and Pinto. Unfortunately Danny Santana wasn’t in the lineup, as I was hoping to get a look at him playing shortstop.   Hitting Sano

Miguel Sano: Future at a Crossroads?

Miguel Sano has been hailed as the future of the franchise. He has been compared to a young Miguel Cabrera. He has had all of that pressure put on his shoulders and up until now has done an unbelievable job. He came to the Twins in 2009 as a 16 year old kid who signed for 3.15 million, which still to this day is the highest amount of money the Twins have ever given to a International Free Agent. After signing in October of 2009 with the Twins he split the rest of the season between the DSL an

Trade Talk: The St. Louis Cardinals

Buyers or Sellers They’re buyers. The Cardinals are one of three teams in the NL Central, along with the Pirates and Reds, who have the three best records in the National League. Each seems assured of a playoff spot.     However, only one of them is assured of a playoff series, and that’s the division winner. The other two will be subjected to the wild card playoff game, which could result in a quick ending to a promising season. So the Cardinals have plenty of incentive to figure out a way to

Catching Up on Mauer's Catching

After an injury plagued 2011 season, the Twins had to take an alternative approach with Joe Mauer and his time on the defensive side of the ball. He started 72 games at catcher, 42 games at DH, and 30 games at first base. It was the first time in Mauer's career when he started played over 100 games and didn't play at least 90 games behind the plate.   In spring training, Mauer made it be known that he wanted to play more time at catcher. Ron Gardenhire and the Twins front office have allowed Ma

Twins Birthdays--July 9

Also posted at wgom.org   Wally Post (1929) Hal Haydel (1944) Steve Luebber (1949) Outfielder Walter Charles Post had 47 at-bats for the Twins in 1963, near the end of a solid career. He was born in St. Wendelin, Ohio and signed with Cincinnati as a free agent in 1946. Perhaps because of his youth, he did not play much in the minors in his first few seasons, but as he got older he played more and played well. He hit .306 with 21 homers for AAA Buffalo in 1951 and .289 with 33 homers for AAA I

Should Diamond be sent to AAA?

Another post suggested the Twins flip Diamond for Hendriks if he doesn't turn it around by the end of the month.   It has been on my mind as I listened to the Gardenhire show yesterday morning and the post game conference following the game.   If Diamond is to get a handful more starts before flipping him for Hendriks, can he at least have a different catcher.   Doumit doesn't catch often but he has caught 11 of 16 Diamond starts. Gardy quoted ERA as a reason. Hopefully someone in the organizat

Former Twins Litter All-Star Rosters

The Minnesota Twins will host the 2014 All-Star Game at Target Field but a plethora of their former players will gather a year early for the Mid-Summer Classic. Seven former members of the organization will join current Twins players Joe Mauer and Glen Perkins. It would have been great to see all of these nine men on the field in Minneapolis so maybe they can all continue playing well for the next calendar year.   Many Twins fans are familiar with the year's being put together by Perkins and Mau

Monday Morning Madness - July 8, 2013

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   The Twins dropped two of three in their series against the Blue Jays and in the process, they dropped to eleven games below .500. The Twins are on a 70-win pace, which would be a huge improvement and a giant disappointment at the same time. Prior to the season, if you had told me the Twins were going to win 70 games, I'd have laughed so hard that my pants would have fallen down. I never wore belts. After the first third of the season, I had off

Blue Jays, Old Age, Totally Lame. (Twins at Blue Jays -- Games 82-84)

Centre of Horrors, With an “R-E” (Twins 0 Blue Jays 4 - Game 82)   After an early first pitch and late jog, my trusty phone informed me the Twins were down four to zip. Last week I might’ve had enough “never say die” to keep an eye on the game, but the Yankees took that with them back to New York.   Catching the pre-game show on my drive home didn’t exactly fill me with rainbows, hopes, and dreams. The crew kept referring to Rogers Centre as a “House of Horrors” for the Twins. They always lose t
