Twins Birthdays--July 20

Also posted at wgom.org     Tony Oliva (1938) Jason Miller (1982) Alexi Casilla (1984)     Outfielder Tony Pedro Oliva played his entire career for the Twins, playing briefly in 1962-1963, making the team for good in 1964 and staying through 1976. He was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, and signed as a free agent with Minnesota in 1961, one of the last Cubans allowed to leave the country to play major league baseball. The Twins released him, but he continued to train with a friend who was playing

Billy the "Goat" Smith

Alright, this is my first Blog post, lets get started. I got in an argument today with my good friend who has totally checked out on the twins the last few seasons. *lucky him! However, when we discuss everyone there is to blame for the last few season, he always comes back to Bill Smith.   My response for him: Its time to move on.   I will start this out by saying; I don't think Bill Smith made many positive baseball decisions for the MN Twins. However, when does the blame for his deficienci

Andy MacPhail?

Hey all you Terry Ryan fans,   How about this scenario? The Pohlad family retools this offseason, releasing Gardy and Terry Ryan, while bringing back Andy MacPhail as the general manager of baseball operations, along with his choice for an on-field manager, hopefully Paul Molitor. Andy is being credited with much of the success in the Baltimore Orioles organization, although they let his contract expire after the 2011 season. Under Buck Showalter, Andy's hire, the Orioles have surged with many p

Prospects Who Have Made Underappreciated Improvements

Here are 4 prospects that are showing major signs of improvement that have generally gone unnoticed. 20 Twins Trades: 2 Trades for 1 in 2001

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed! I also wrote about the Todd Walker or Butch Huskey trade, depending on who you ask. You can find it here.   2001 was the first season in what would become a nearly decade-long turnaround of the Twins' franchise. For the first time in ages, the Twins were in a position to buy at the trade deadline, rather than sell. This exciting season was about to get more exciting! Two separate trades signified that the Twins were going to finally do whatever

The Setting Sun of Morneau

It sure seems like the MLB media and a portion of the Twins Community thinks Justin Morneau is on his way out of Minnesota VIA trade. I will have to see it to believe it, but I have resigned myself to this scenario becoming a definite possibility.   I want to cut to the chase. Morneau certainly did not live up to his potential. 7 years ago I expected that his numbers and accomplishments would be much further along than they are now. I do not say this to be negative, I do not say this to pick a f

Handing Out Twins First Half Awards

At the beginning of the season, I devoted an entire week to make predictions about the upcoming MLB season. These predictions can be fun especially with all of the surprises that surround the game of baseball. I had the Toronto Blue Jays winning the AL East... oops. There are going to be a few swings and misses.   With the All-Star Game over and done with, let's take a look back at the first half of the season and see who's in line for each of NoDak Twins Fan's end of the season awards. There ar

Twins Minor League Report (7/17): Rosario Sizzles

Much like the Major League squads, the best players at the Triple-A level gathered for their All-Star Game on Wednesday evening. The Rochester Red Wings had two representatives, Chris Colabello and Andrew Albers, and they both played roles in different parts of the game.   Colabello was the starting first baseman for the International League team and he batted in the third spot in the order. After not hitting any home runs in the Triple-A Home Run Derby, Colabello looked to make some noise with

A look at Joe Nathan's Hall of Fame chances

Last night we saw the obvious future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera be the set-up man for former Twins closer and current Texas Ranger Joe Nathan. Now Rivera was in the game in the eighth inning to secure him appearing in the game, but is it possible that we saw a one-two punch of future Hall of Famers? It's tough to break into the Hall being a relief pitcher, but Nathan might just have right amount of saves at the end of his career to punch a ticket to Cooperstown. Nathan currently sits at 328 ca

What If?

I suppose I should start by admitting that I have a split personality – by “day” I am an ardent Twins fan, rooting for my team even when they do something stupid (which is all too often these days, but that’s another topic). At “night,” however, another side of me surfaces and I become one who is passionate about English football – and by football, I mean real football. Not the thing that millions of fans follow in this country that involves a prolate spheroid of artificial animal hide, but a ga

Twins Minor League Report (7/16): Transactions Galore

Typically, the full season minor league affiliates do not have games scheduled for the night of the All Star game. Earlier in the day, the Gulf Coast League Twins played a game. However, the New Britain Rock Cats played the middle game of a three-game series at Harrisburg.   The story of the day was that there were a lot of minor league transactions throughout the system, and frankly, several more must be in the works. Here is what we have as this is written:     LHP Edgar Ibarra has been prom

Change is a challenge Tyler Grimes has embraced

A number of this year's Cedar Rapids Kernels have had to make an adjustment to wearing a Kernels uniform this summer after playing last season for the Beloit Snappers, who were the Minnesota Twins Midwest League affiliate during the eight prior years. It no doubt felt a little odd to some of them.   But to Tyler Grimes, who was the Snappers primary shortstop much of last season, the change in geographic location was far from the most drastic of the adjustments he's had to make.   http://kn
