Trade Talk: Oakland A's

Buyer or Seller?   A year ago, many fans believed that the Oakland A’s and the Baltimore Orioles snuck into the playoffs. Most thought that there would be a return to reality in 2013. Apparently the reality is that both teams are pretty good. The A’s are currently 62-43 and have a five game lead in the AL West. The A’s have been linked to the likes of Jake Peavy in recent days, although that seems unlikely at this point, but the A’s are certainly buyers, with several needs.   What They Need   Pi

Twins Recent Trade Deadlines Have Been Underwhelming

For the Minnesota Twins, the last handful of trade deadlines have been mostly uneventful. This seems out of character for a team that has posted one of baseball's worst records in the last few seasons. There are different ways for a team to rebuild and the Twins were very active during last offseason by dealing away Denard Span and Ben Revere. Minnesota doesn't necessarily need to move away pieces that will still be with the club in the offseason.   That being said, it would make the most sense

Twins Birthdays--July 29

Also posted at wgom.org   Bill Whitby (1943) Seth Greisinger (1975)     Right-hander William Edward Whitby appeared in four games for the Twins in 1964. He was born in Crewe, Virginia, went to high school in Victoria, Virginia, and signed with Minnesota as a free agent in 1961. A starter for most of his minor league career, he did not do a lot in his first few years, but had a solid year at AA Charlotte in 1964. He was promoted to Minnesota for about two weeks in June that year, at the age of

Reviewing the Span and Revere Trades

The non-waiver trade deadline is closing in quickly and it is still tough to know what the Twins will do in the coming hours. Is Justin Morneau's Twins career over? Will Glen Perkins still be the guy at the back end of the bullpen? Can the Twins afford to part with Kevin Correia or Mike Pelfrey? There could be a lot of deals in the next couple days or there could be nothing but the sounds of crickets.   During the offseason, the Twins made a lot of noise by dealing two of their starting centerfi

Monday Morning Madness - July 29, 2013

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   So, are the Twins not terrible or is this just another mirage? I've got to say, I've been going back and forth between "this team sucks" and "this team doesn't really suck" far too many times. I'm growing tired of it. It would be nice to just know, you know? Every time I see a lineup posted, I giggle and then make a sad, pathetic joke about Rochester. The starting pitching is underwhelming. However, the Twins have exited the All-Star break wi

Green Shoots from Broken Bat Rubble (Twins at Mariners - Games 98-101)

Daydream Disbeliever (Twins 2 Mariners 8 – Game 98)   The Twins got knocked out early in this game, but everybody played nine innings anyway.   During my little league tour of duty, I spent most of time at whichever part of the outfield they felt saved me from embarrassing attempts at fielding fly balls. If I was lucky and the ball stayed far away from my glove, I had nothing to do but daydream away until I was forced to humiliate myself at the plate.   Getting blown out of the water early, one

Thoughts on Miguel Sano, Discipline, and the Twins' (and Rock Cats') Reaction

"Twins Weekend" in Cedar Rapids

Celebrating the affiliation agreement with the Minnesota Twins has been pretty much an “all season long” thing for the Cedar Rapids Kernels and their fans, but this weekend was the official Twins Weekend event in Cedar Rapids.   Guests of honor have included all-time Twins great Tony Oliva, Twins organist Sue Nelson and mascot TC Bear. All three made appearances at the Kernels’ game with visiting Peoria on Friday night.   Oliva signed autographs for a long line of fans before the game, Nel

From AJ to DJ to Eddie, but no Sano: Rock Cats at Fighting Phils Saturday night.

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch -----   Despite the current drama within the Twins' organization with their future star third baseman, which is getting to be about as bad as that of the Yankees with their former star third baseman, and unsure whether the unanimous number three prospect in baseball will play, I made the forty five minute trip to Reading (think of "ready" when pronouncing it, not "righting" and "rithmetic") to watch the Rock Cats face the Phillies' AA team,

Walker Drops Out of Prospect Rankings

How does Walker drop out of the Twins Prospect Rankings?     Leads the Midwest League or Top 3 Ranking in: HRs / RBIs / Slg% / OPS% / TBs / & Runs.   Walker gets jumped over by this years 3rd rounder who is only 2 months younger (Turner) and in Rookie ball. He is the 7th ranked guy on his own on team? and still behind 2 guys who have yet to pitch this season (Bard & Chargois)?   Am I the only one who finds this just wrong? http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/news/prospects/index.jsp?c_id=min

Twins Minor League Report (7/26): Albers Does It Again

The story of Miguel Sano's benching after a slow home run trot has certainly taken on a life of it's own. There have been multiple websites and media outlets that have picked up the tale. He wouldn't play again on Friday and it will be interesting to see when he gets back on the field. He can be a difference maker to the Rock Cats offense and the team wants to try and get back to the .500 mark. Sano can help to make that happen.   Sano might be getting a lot of the attention for the Twins farm

Peterson determined to Stay in the Big Leagues

After spending a decade slogging his way round the Minor Leagues, Brock Peterson finally achieved his dream of recording a Major League hit during the St Louis Cardinals 11-3 victory against the Phillies.     The 29-year old, making just his second appearance in the majors, was handed his chance following injury to Matt Holliday. Peterson did his case for an extended run in the team by grabbing his first run for the franchise in a comfortable win against the Phillies, much to the delight of fan
