Twins April Recap

We have seen one month of Twins baseball, and the team sits at 17-12 (.586) which leads the struggling AL Central by 3.5 games. Though we have seen lots of downs, the positives and flashes of brilliance have far more outweighed the bad. Before they start a six game road trip with two division rivals, let’s take a look at the impressive first month of April.   The Good Starting Pitching The Minnesota Twins, more or less, aren’t known for their pitching. It seems like the Twins

Byron Buxton: No longer a center fielder?

There are few plays in baseball that rival an acrobatic catch from Byron Buxton. Since he debuted with the Twins in 2015, Byron Buxton’s athleticism and prowess in center field have never ceased to impress. Of course, we’re all aware of the downside such fearless play brought too. The violent crashes into the wall and diving plays that have left him hobbled are etched into our memories. The Minnesota Twins organization remembers those downsides as well, and they’ve opted to use Buxton exclusivel

A Deeper Dive after 13 Games

The top line is that the Twins are 9-4 and lead the AL Central by two games. They've outscored their opponents 58-34, the second-best run differential in the American League. 34 runs allowed is second-best in MLB while the 58 runs scored is 17th of 30 teams. Team batting stats are so-so at best--23rd in team BA and OPS, 17th in runs scored, 15 (T) in homers, 20th in walks and seventh (worst) in strikeouts. The pitching stats make up for the poor offense and then some: second in ERA, second in le

On the road again...New York state of mind

21.5 hours. That's how long it takes to drive straight from Mitchell, SD to The Bronx, NY. 21.5 hours. Four games against the Bronx Bombers, the Twins' playoff kryptonite, the &#@%! Yankees. The first road trip through Kansas City and Miami involved a decent 6 hour drive, and a flight to the SE corner of America. Seven nights away from home.  In Kansas City I found the traditional opening day experience. Overpriced tickets, a giant flag, recognizing the whole roster on the fie

Twins take series, win Edouard Julien’s MLB debut

Sonny Gray tossed 5 scoreless innings as the Twins beat the White Sox 3-1 Wednesday to take the three game series 2-1 and cap off a 4-2 homestand.  Gray now has a 0.53 ERA through three starts this season, It appears that he also only went 5 innings today because he is battling an upper respiratory virus. He left with a lead that was never relinquished, earning himself a win. Kind of sweet justice for him after not getting the win in his previous, even better, start because the bullpen couldn’t

Twins talker: Hear about Kirby, Billy Martin and the NY Mob, Gaetti being psychic, Scott Ericksons no hitter from Former MLB Umpire Dale Scott

"I always love Minnesota and the Twins" is what Dale Scott said when I asked him what it was like to umpire Twins games during his career spanning 3,897 MLB games.  Dale has a very unique story, not just from the point of view as an umpire who was on the field for 3 World Series (including the 2001 series), but 3 All Star Games, and 3 no hitters (including Scott Ericksons for the Twins), but also as a human being. You see, Dale was hiding a secret, for his entire 30+ year career as an MLB U

Twins win on Kenta Maeda’s birthday

The Twins came away victorious tonight 3-2 vs. the Chicago White Sox in their first home night game of the 2023 season. The win came on an error on what was supposed to just be a sacrifice bunt by Michael A. Taylor. Instead, the throw from the pitcher hit Taylor on the helmet and went into right field allowing pinch runner  Willi Castro to score on the play. Taylor was given credit for a hit but no RBI as the run scored because of the error.. Pablo Lopez, who struggled in the first inning,

Is Jorge Lopez Back?

Last year the Minnesota Twins made a much-needed trade to acquire All-Star closer Jorge Lopez. He was having an excellent year when the Twins acquired him for two pitching prospects, Cade Povich and Yennier Cano. Lopez had a 1.68 ERA with 48.1 IP which led him to the All-Star game. The Twin's bullpen was not great, so they decided to make a trade to bring him in to bolster the pen. Lopez’s first two months as a Twin were not great. He had a 4.37 ERA across 23 innings pitched and his walk rate wa

Podcast Interview with The Sandlot Director

"Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends; heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart kid, you'll never go wrong"That iconic line spoken by "Babe Ruth" to Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, moreso than any line truly encapsulates what The Sandlot is all about.  Benny befriends the new kid. We all have either been a Benny or Scott Smalls, trying to fit in, make new friends, waiting for someone to reach out with a warm smile and a friendly hand. In 2018, for the 25th

One Strike an' Yer Out!

Baseball didn't start out as a spectator sport, merely a pastime for children, farm boys, or city folk with enough open park space to play in.  Three strikes were the rule and fastballs weren't permitted, to allow rank novices to have a chance at putting the ball in play for some healthful fun and a little light competition.  In early variants the pitcher was required to suit the batter's preference as to low or high pitches. What if we were devising rules made for spectators and played by

A Look at Depth: 2nd Base

I’ve decided to write a series of posts regarding the depth in the Twins system, or possibly lack thereof depending on how you feel about a particular position. I plan to go position by position in hopes to shed some light on who could make an impact as early as 2023, or who may make an impact within a few years. I was inspired by Nick Nelson’s posts regarding the major league team, but didn’t want to duplicate what he did, so I will only be writing about the guys not on the 40-man roster, becau

Twins dominate opening series; preview of the Marlins

The Twins outscored the Royals in three games 11-4. The starting pitching went 16 1/3 innings with only a run allowed, and the Bullpen, save for some rough outings from Moran and Pagan, was excellent. Duran and Jorge Lopez picked up saves, with Lopez pitching in all three games, allowing no runs. The bats were pretty solid, Buxton was very good in three games, Larnach has a .455 batting average, Joey Gallo blasted two homers in one game, and Jeffers drove in a few runs in his only start. My 6-4-3 on Sundays Twins Game Sunday was the game many Twins fans were hoping for. After two consecutive close games, both by 2-0 wins, the Twins were able to put up seven runs today. four of them coming off the bat of off-season free agent signed Joey Gallo. He was 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI.  The Twins start the season 3-0. They start a three-game series against Luis Arraez and the Marlins on Monday, but before that let's look at what happened today: Max Kepler dr

Buxton and the Bullpen help Twins improve to 2-0. My 6-4-3 about Saturdays game.

2-0. That's been the theme of the 2023 season so far, for the 2023 Twins. Two days after defeating the Royals 2-0 behind two runs in the 6th inning, and some very timely infield defense, the Twins managed to scrape across runs and turn it over to the bullpen. Sound familiar? Here is my 6-4-3 on Saturday's 2-0 victory. Six things or players who stuck out to me, during today's game. Four things I really liked to see, and updates on three former Twins who had a good day! • Byron Buxton remain
