I’m Incredibly Bored of Position Players Pitching

There was a time in baseball history where throwing in the towel and using a position player to pitch was a rare sight to see. Heck, I’m sure people tuned in to witness the comedy and see a position player actually try on the mound.  For example, Jeff Francour pitching 2 innings in 2015, topping out at 88 MPH and mixing in 4 different pitches to boot.  Or Ichiro Suzuki taking the craft seriously, throwing 87 MPH and mixing in 3 different pitches during his outing in 2015.

What is a bunt?

Well it isn't this! As much as I love the Twins (and bundt cake too), it drives me to frustration when small ball could be used but isn't. With a number of terrible at bats in the losing effort against the dreaded Cleveland team, we proved we can swing and miss, but alas, cannot bunt. I would agree that when you have your meat of the lineup coming to bat with men on first and second perhaps a bunt may be the last approach to be used. My issue with that would be when we have attempted the Tw

Bullpen Blues - A Twins Blog

The Twins dropped the series to the Diamondbacks and, as of this writing, are only one game ahead of the Guardians in the division. Next up, a whole slew of games against those Guardians. Beware. I’m trying to maintain my optimism after the series loss in Arizona. It’s not going well. I tried to listen to the game on Sunday, but all that happened was that I got to hear the Diamondbacks hit a grand slam. A door to victory shuts. I switch my Echo Dot (a wonderful Father’s Day gift from my bel

Grading Falvey's Drafts Mid 2022

Towards the end of last year, I decided to evaluate Falvey's draft record at the time. As I noted, it was a work in progress and there has been quite a bit of shifting around this year. I postulated this year would be a critical year for Falvey's future with the Twins as fans, and I'm sure owners, were waiting with bated breath for the pitchers of the future to arrive and the high round draft choices to prove their mettle, advance through the system, and prove the front office's methodology.

Uggghhhh

Twins Geezer here! Another one of those perplexing games that begins with the Twins tearing the cover off the ball, scoring very little, leaving men stranded, bats going silent and ending with a big L. Not sure about much, but the Twins continue to have a couple of very bad habits. The first, I have brought up before. About every 7 games, we score no runs and look like we have been hit by a Voodoo curse. The second is mentioned in my opening sentence. This one is very concerning. This

Kirilloff is back up; Polanco to IL as Twins go to Phoenix

It has been announced just a little bit ago that 1B/OF Alex Kirilloff has been recalled from the Triple-A St. Paul Saints and second baseman Jorge Polanco has been put on the injured list retroactive to June 13th, due to lower back tightness. This comes as the Twins head to Phoenix to face the 30-35, 4th place Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend. It will be interesting whether Kirilloff is put in the lineup right away tonight or not as the Twins will face lefty Madison Baumgarner.  Here are t

I Know the Pieces Fit - A Twins Blog

Writing one column for every Twins series has made me realize how fickle a fan I am. If the Twins lose a few more than they win, I’m the first guy to say we’re all doomed. Twins win a few and I’m starting to plan for the playoffs. Win and strut about. Lose and pout in the corner. I’m the exact kind of fan that drives other fans nuts. Today, though, I feel as if I’ve arrived in a moment of clarity. The Twins are far enough into the season for me to say they are a play-off worthy team. There’

Twins Positioned for Deadline Creativity

With trade season approaching, the Twins find themselves in a unique position that could allow them to get creative. Max Kepler has been pretty damn good for the Twins this season. He's one of the best defensive right fielders in the game and has posted a .243 / .341 / .400 (116wRC+). That's good for a 1.2 fWAR through 55 games. Another guy who's been pretty good is top prospect Alex Kirilloff. What he's doing at AAA right now is fairly incredible. He looks ready for the next level, ri

Rays of Freaking Sunshine - A Twins Blog

Thanks to Apple TV, my family got to watch a Twins game for a change. As luck would have it, we got a good one. The Twins crushed the Rays nine to four. Dingers abounded. I silenced my yelps of delight so my daughter would stay asleep. I enjoyed seeing some of the players I’d only heard about on the radio. I’m not sure I knew what Pagan or Larnach looked like. Watching Buxton hit a home run is a lot more fun than just hearing about it. He enjoys every second of his trot around the bases. I

Is there a Catching issue?

I have never been a HUGE Jeffers fan, but at the same time I have never been anti-jeffers. but as this season goes on, I have to wonder what the best decision is to fix our catching. Or does it need fixing? The Twins are exactly middle of the road when it comes to team ERA, and for the Twins that is a huge win!!  We do not have aces to rely on, or stud bullpens, so being 15 out of 30 is quite acceptable. A certain amount of that has to go to the catching. so in that aspect you have to give

Schrödinger’s Twins - A Twins Blog

When I went to bed last night, the Twins were up seven to three. I know what you’re thinking – how early does he go to bed? I have to get up early so I go to bed early. Anyway, the whole game turned into a Schrödinger’s cat kind of thing. Overly simplified, Schrödinger posed an interesting dilemma. First, theoretically, someone could place a cat in a box with a radioactive particle. Then, a radiation detector would be connected to a hammer. The hammer would be poised over a container o

Rocco Baldelli's mindset on close games is annoying

As I read Ted Schwerzler's article from earlier today, this quote from Twins manager Rocco Baldelli stuck with me: "...We want them to be available and ready to finish ballgames when the time comes" What if the time never comes, because you throw in the proverbial towel if the team doesn't have the lead? Last night the Twins got down early, and when the starter Cole Sands got pulled from the game the Twins went to a combination of Juan Minaya-Yennier Cano-Tyler Duffey-Trevo

Frustration

I just fed my obsession by playing golf for about the fifteenth day out of sixteen. Well, it wasn't pretty and I left the course pretty frustrated. Before I got home, I had a chance to read the latest on Twins Daily and Major League Trade Rumors. The Twins will face the high-flying Yankees with three red-hot pitchers going for the Evil Empire. The Twins will counter with Cole Sands, Chris Archer and Dylan Bundy. I don't think I've ever seen such a lopsided matchup in favor of the visiting team w

Saints and Cubs - A Twins Blog

The Twins took two out of three in Toronto, even in a depleted state. And if the Twins were playing without players, then the St. Paul Saints were stripped down to the bone as well. I wasn't sure what to expect from them when we watched them take on the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines. I know I didn't expect a record-setting day for home runs and a near double-digit victory for the Saints, but I was glad to see it. I sported my Rosario shirsey and Twins hat, but I'm sad to say my daughter did not m

One Guy's Review of Globe Life Field

Having completed my trek to visit all 30 current major league stadiums a few years ago, the Rangers threw me a curve by opening a new park, even though the old one wasn’t that old. My hope had been to visit the new Globe Life Field when it opened in 2020, but then this thing called COVID happened. Next up was to catch the Twins in Texas last year, but they had the nerve to schedule their series the weekend of my son’s wedding. I love baseball, but they ain’t topping my son. And I would hav

Rocco Baldelli: Hero or Villian?

Twins fans, like most fans tend to have a hot/cold, love/hate relationship with coaches/managers. What exactly is the Baldelli Lama? IS he a wunderkind for babying and piecing together a top 10 starting rotation getting the max results from a bunch of #3s or #4s? Will he end up looking like a genius by not letting starters go past 70 pitches regardless of results? With the delayed start to the season, OBVIOUSLY no pitcher should be able to go past 4 2/3 or touch 80 pitches per game rig

Situational Bashing

Lack of situation hitting will cost the Twins a lot of runs and wins this year. By David Weinshilboum It’s the weekend; the Minnesota Twinkies snapped a hitting rut that extended through a dismal showing against the lowly Detroit Tigers. The good guys beat a very solid Blue Jays team. Byron Buxton’s bat appears to have come alive. All is well with the offense, right? Wrong. I have to go killjoy on those fans who think the offense will be fine moving forward.  I offer you exhi

Premature Consternation

The Twins are in 1st place in the AL Central by 4.5 games, yet there is creeping concern everywhere regarding the Twins future. Are all of the sweaty palms  and consternation? is it an overreaction to just a bad stretch against a bad team? Are the Twins about to lose their hold on 1st place with us playing the AL East while Cleveland gets Baltimore, Texas, and Oakland?   Lets take a look at some of the concern in Twins Territory and see what we think. 1) Our offense. Done Dirty in Detroit - A Twins Blog

In my last blog entry, I said the Twins needed a strong showing in Detroit to prove they were legit. During those five games, the Twins did not prove their legitimacy. Far from it. They looked bad out there, and they chalked up some injuries. Five games, and now success seems like it's falling out of reach.  This column's getting posted later than I'd like because life got busy for a bit. During that time, I didn't get much of a chance to follow those five games. The final scores popped up
The Hot Corner

Tigers and Blue Jays and Yankees, oh my!

Needless to say, walking away from Detroit with a 1-4 series record is not what the Twins were hoping for. This was a chance for the Twins to gain some serious ground on the White Sox. who are currently in Toronto and struggling in nearly every facet of the game, but the Twins squandered nearly every opportunity. In today's series finale game, Archer, Gordon, and Urshela were just about the only bright spots. Duran pitched well too. Urshela continues to be Captain Clutch.  The Twins are ban
