Twins 3, Tigers 5: Big Day Ends in Loss to Tigers
bighat replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great post, especially this part. Last night the Twins got 2 RBI from Nick Gordon and a HR from Mark Contreras. The day before it was Jose Miranda. Where the heck is everyone else? I mentioned in a post on yesterday's game thread that Arraez, Buxton, Correa and Polanco absolutely have to start carrying this team. Polanco's batting .237 now and has gone ice cold, Buxton's not even playing, and Correa & Arraez are sprinkling in a few hits & walks here and there but nobody's catching fire. All the pitching in the world won't help unless this team can score runs. They've been shut out more times than any other team in baseball, which is a very scary statistic no matter how their offense stacks up on paper.- 34 replies

Twins Acquire Tyler Mahle from Reds
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ooof. Steer and Hajjar would have been OK, but losing Encarnacion-Strand also is a real punch in the gut. I was hoping other teams were asleep on his incredible rise through the system, but of course they weren't. As others have said, you gotta give up something to get something. So here we are. Hope this Mahle guy can pitch 7 innings because we still need bullpen help! -
Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
bighat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I recall, Sam Dyson was very good the year the Twins acquired him, but had been pretty average before that. Let's hope this isn't a repeat. Considering what was out there, and what they gave up, I like this move for the Twins.- 113 replies

Yeah, as mentioned in the comment above the Twins are in a real tough place if they don't want to deal Lewis or Miranda. I doubt the Twins land anyone noteworthy, probably a few no-name bullpen guys if anything. They really are between a rock and a hard place and I just don't see them having anything worth giving the Reds for Mahle.

Nice game by Sanchez. Guy had just an amazing year way back in 2016 with a 15-2 record and a 3.00 ERA. If he can dig down and find any remaining magic in that arm, now's the time. Twins are still limping since the break with a 4-4 record, but would probably be 2-6 if it weren't for Jose Miranda. It would be nice if guys like Buxton, Correa, Polanco and Arraez were carrying this team in August - gonna be pretty hard to make the playoffs if those guys don't get hot. And by "get hot" I mean something like an 8 game hitting streak, with games that include multiple hits and a few bombs sprinkled in. Going 2-for-4 with a HR and then going hitless for the next 4 games isn't enough. These guys are all All-Stars, somebody needs to step up before this thing gets away from them. I had a dream that the Twins traded Dylan Bundy to the White Sox. Doesn't make much sense, but dreams rarely do!

The problem with the Twins young talent is they are virtually ALL on the IL. So their value is about as low as can be right now - and you can add Kirilloff to the list also. It's incredibly bad luck. They are in need but the cupboard of prospects is bare. -

I don't think they'll win the division, but I do think that with Buxton, Correa, Polanco and Arraez they stand a chance of getting hot and maybe pulling it off. So I wouldn't sell, I'd just add a couple of bullpen fliers for some A-ball prospects and see if you catch lightening in a bottle. That way you're not abandoning the season and you're also not burning up your future either. That's just me. -

Twins shouldn't sell, but they shouldn't mortgage the future either. Get a couple relievers for some lottery-ticket prospects and see what happens. No need to give up the farm for Montas, having a guy who can only play every 5th day just isn't enough to help this team. It's been much more interesting than last year, most of us had checked out by June in '21 and the whole year was miserable. That said, with such horrific pitching and an inconsistent offense that's been known to run ice-cold for an entire series, I just don't think the Twins have enough to win the division this year. We should all be realistic about that, it'll make the inevitable pain much easier to swallow. -
Agreed. At this point it's pretty much a given that he wins Comeback Player of the Year Award next year. I'm not being sarcastic, I wish I was being sarcastic.

Nothing about this particular game upsets me - but what does grind my gears is that this is exactly why you can't give away games like they did on Tuesday. The Twins were soundly beaten by the Brewers in every department yesterday, they were going against Milwaukee's best pitcher, it was just a baseball game where they got smoked. It happens. But to leave this series 0-2 instead of 1-1 is unforgiveable, and this is exactly the type of thing that could very well keep this team out of the playoffs.

We have such low standards, it's ridiculous. If this team played in New York they'd be ripped to shreds by the media and fans would be throwing tomatoes at them from left field. This Midwestern warm-milk pollyanna 'good-try-boys' attitude from Twins fans is as old and washed up as Will Smith. Fans need to drum up a little self respect and realize we collectively deserve better than a team who at best is going to add to a world-ever-worst 0-19 playoff record.

Rocco never calls individuals out in the press. If Buxton strikes out 4 times and he is asked about it, Baldelli will say something like "yeah, tough day for a lot of bats out there today" and then add "defensively he had a great game", or something like that and switch the subject. He's never once called a guy out, if anything he'll publicly heap praise on guys who are clearly struggling. To some it makes Rocco look clueless, but he's clearly just the type of manager who would never be critical of his own players to the press. I know the players like it, but as a fan it can be very frustrating.

Twins starter stumbles, the offense make a dramatic and inspiring comeback, bullpen immediately gives momentum away and the Twins lose late. The W-L record in games when the Twins hit a go-ahead HR in the 5th inning or later is probably something like 2-8. It's unbelievable. This team is still limping along. Go get 'em today, I guess.

Yep, me too. The Twins are the type of team who will go 2-4, 3-4, and 4-3 over the next few weeks. They've been treading water for about 1.5 months now and have let many winnable games go. Most of us have watched them all year and I think most of us agree that this is a very average MLB team with lots of holes. Right now the Twins need both Buxton and Correa to get hotter than molten-lava and they also need to add at least 3 capable bullpen arms to have a shot. Even then they will have to fend off a push. Because don't forget that Chicago and Cleveland can both add talent as well. If the White Sox nab some pitching and Cleveland trades for guys like Nelson Cruz and/or Josh Bell....things are going look very bleak for Twins fans.

Minnesota Twins Activate Slugger Miguel Sano

I hear ya Geez, but the Twins would likely have to pay GMs to take those guys off our hands. Nobody's going to want any of them in a trade.- 60 replies

Week in Review: Back in Business
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes....but like I said, what if he goes 2-for-26 in his first 8 games and the Twins go 1-7 over that span? Ideally you could give Sano the entire month of August to right himself, but the Twins don't have the breathing room and can't really afford to do that if things start slipping. Like it or not, Sano is going to be in a pressure cooker when he returns.- 20 replies

bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Totally agree haha. Yeah, I think they kinda have to give him a shot...can you imagine if he catches a hot streak? That would be such a major boost for this team. Then again, how long of a leash do you give Sano? Let's say he plays three games in a row and goes 0-for-12 with 7 K's? What now? It's quite the pickle, and everyone will be on the edge of their seats for every Sano AB - if he gets the chance.- 20 replies

Head-scratching outing from Moran, and I can't remember the last time I saw Magill do anything worthwhile. This game became very close in the 8th inning - those who were watching know what I'm talking about - and it's just incredibly frustrating to see the bullpen once again pouring gasoline onto a dying fire. Correa should have had 2 bombs, Baddoo really robbed him late in the game with an amazing catch - making up for his mistake that cost the team a couple runs earlier that inning. Twins are really going to have to start lighting it up on offense until pitching help arrives, nice to see them lay down an 8 spot. Very interested to see how Gray responds today after the long break. He's averaged 4 innings, 5.5 ER and just 1.5 strikeouts over his last two appearances. A stellar outing today would restore some much needed confidence.

Do the Twins Have Anything to Trade?
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good point. The Twins traded Francisco Abad to the Red Sox for Pat Light in 2016, and then last year they traded Robles to the Sox for a AA righty named Alex Scherff, who I've never heard of before or since. They traded Francisco Rodney to the A's for Dakota Chalmers, who seemed like a nice grab but has stalled and really never gotten past AAA. He's now 25 years old and has an 8+ ERA this year in the Dodgers organization.- 24 replies

Do the Twins Have Anything to Trade?
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Let's be honest - it looks like there's no way the Twins could even consider adding a front line starter like Montas without parting with Royce Lewis. It looks like with Steer or Wallner, they might be able to get some middle relief - but even that would be just a rental. The Twins need help and the cupboard is bare, with the exception of a huge, glistening, glorious hanging ham named Royce - who is unfortunately worth less than his peak value right now due to injury concerns. Twins might also have to toss in Brooks Lee for anything major to happen here. The farm could be picked clean...and if it is, let's hope the Twins really are going for the whole kit 'n kaboodle here in 2022.- 24 replies

Twins Appear to Trend Towards Pool Savings on Day 2
bighat replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Teams who are trading to compete typically aren't trading away their best offensive MLB player - or even their 2nd or 3rd best - when making a deal. I believe only MLB talent that will leave Minnesota are guys they want to kick off the team and the 40-man roster, much like Logan Forsythe was in the Dozier deal a few years back. The Dodgers didn't want him and needed a place for Dozier to play, so the Twins took Forsythe as a courtesy, and hence got a better prospect from LA in exchange for being open to doing so. Twins may be open to getting rid of veterans like Sano or even Kepler, but I don't think they're going to find many takers unless they package them with Royce Lewis-types. As for Polanco, I just can't see him being traded. Twins offense just isn't anywhere near good enough to survive losing a guy like that.
