    Nice win for Gray. Unfortunately it's too little, too late. It's nice to see them making hay against the Royals - too bad they didn't do it against teams like Detroit, Texas, and LAA, when the race started heating up back in July/August. Still down by 5 games, Twins need a win today and almost certainly need to take 4-5 in Cleveland to keep the season alive.

    Disagree. We didn't lose Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts - we lost a couple of underachieving 30 year-old rookies and a guy who won 7 games and had a 5.03 ERA last year. Who else did we lose? Alcala? Would have been nice to have him I suppose but I'm not sure he'd have bumped Pagan off the roster.

    This team won't finish .500, probably 5-8 games below. And we should consider ourselves lucky to have had them even contending for as long as they did. Hot take: Even without the injuries, the record wouldn't be much different. Larnach & Kirilloff were on pace for a combined 14 HRs and Paddack would what, have a 6-8 record when it was all said and done? It was never about the injuries, folks, it's just a below average team playing in a terrible division. First half was all just smoke and mirrors, and when it came time to regress to the mean, they regressed like all bad baseball teams do.

    Anyone here who thinks the Twins aren't going to roll over and lose 10-2 in Game 4? 1-7 stretch against CHW and NYY, pretty on-brand for the 2022 Twins.

    My prediction: Tommy John and done for all of next year as well, he becomes a free agent with the 1-1, 4.41 stats as his career totals as a Twin. Steer looks like he's going to have the career that we all hoped Kirilloff and/or Larnach would have.

    I honestly don't see how this team wins even 1 game in NYY. I think you have to expect a sweep and be happy if they can eek out a game....but even thinking positively and creatively, I can't see how they even win one.

    Here are Lopez's career stats before this year: In 2019 his ERA was 6.33 In 2020 his ERA was 6.34 In 2021 his ERA was 6.07 I guess I'm confused, did people think we traded for Peak 2002 Eric Gagne or something? Did fans think Lopez was going to be the slam-the-door-closer we've been searching for since Joe Nathan left? If so, then yeah he's a disappointment. But guys - we should have never expected him to be good in the first place. The Twins trade deadline moves weren't fixes, they were band aids. These were middle-of-the-road guys and the results are luke warm as expected.

    It's not this particular loss that's frustrating, but it does remind you that the Twins are in this "must win" position due to consistently losing winnable games all year long. Some guy on Twitter compiled a list of a bunch of games where the Twins had a very high win expectancy going into the late innings, but somehow ended up losing. Don't let the San Fran and Boston series fool you, folks. This is who the Twins are.

    I totally agree - we got guys like Kirilloff and Larnach who will be 25 and 26 years old before they see action again. These aren't "young players"! They are supposed to be entering the prime years of their entire careers right now. Do we have to wait until they're 32 years old for either of them to hit 20 homers and get 75 RBI??? They should have been putting up those numbers LAST year, but they have combined to do jack squat. And injuries don't count as an excuse. It is what it is. "What might have happened" doesn't count. Yet here in MN we have people lining up to make excuses for these "young players". Embarrasing. Meanwhile half the other teams have 20, 21 and 22 year-old guys who are doing just fine, and a handful of them are tearing up the league.

    Oh for sure - he's widely known as the biggest Twins draft bust in recent memory. So bad that people want to forget about him and have written him off already. Seems like a good kid, just had nowhere near the talent that anyone thought he did.

    Duffey to the Yanks - wow. Can you imagine if the guy gets called up and pitches lights out in the playoffs? C'mon....we all know it's gonna happen. Sigh. Wish he'd have signed with SF or AZ or some team out west we'd never have to hear about. Oh well - good for him, we all knew he'd find a job and he'll definitely be pitching in MLB again, no question.

    I got bad news for ya: if he hasn't done it by now, it ain't happening. Bad loss. Twins are now in the unfortunate position of now needing to come out of the next 7 games with a 4-3 record. A sweep in Chicago is almost a must. If they play like they have been playing against decent competition, Twins could go 1-6 over the next week and that'll be the end of the season.

    Agree 100%. When you have a guy on the brink of doubting his abilities, let him play where he's comfortable.

    How about Keoni Cavaco, the Twins 2019 #1 pick who is currently in his 2nd year at Fort Myers single-A ball. Hit .221 last year and is hitting .222 this year. Has never put together anything close to an encouraging season.

    Great write up. This is yet another reminder - especially for us fans - not to overvalue prospects. There are only a handful of blue-chip, sure things out there. And even those guys often don't deliver on expectations. Too early to give up on the above mentioned players, obviously, but the clock is ticking. Martin is going to be a 24 or 25 year-old rookie even if he makes the show, and Balazovich is on the brink of demotion next spring.

    Correct. All he's done is win 2 division titles and will likely have the team finishing over .500 in 3-out-of-4 years at the helm. Whether the seat should be hot is an argument, but it's definitely not. If the Twins have a bad year next year, let's talk. FWIW I think that players love the guy, and that goes a long way. Some memorable managing moments this year include the way he handled the Gary Sanchez blocked plate call (do we need to see more of that Rocco?) as well as the team's 6-game losing streak in August, where he showed that he was unable motivate the team to be competitive even in the season's most important moments.

    When the season started, I thought that Nick Gordon deserved a chance to earn a roster spot. As the season progressed, I started thinking that Nick Gordon was definitely worthy of a roster spot and would have a great career as a utility guy. As we roll into September, I now believe that Nick Gordon is a full-time starter and should play every day, without fail. There have been so many games where Gordon is in the middle of everything, He's given this team serious contributions on offense, he stays on the field and makes plays on defense. Maybe he's not even reached his ceiling? I want to see his name in the Twins lineup every day for years to come, alongside Miranda.

    Twins face another no-namer tonight with a 5.30 ERA? Great, that means they'll score 2 runs, maybe 3. This team hasn't looked good - much less dominant - for months now. Twins need to keep making hay while they can, really no room to even lose a game against the Red Sox here. Dylan Bundy has lowered his ERA by half a run in August. He's certainly earned himself a contract next year in the majors. Good for him.

    Right? Twins just got swept easily in HOU by the Astros. There's absolutely no reason to assume the Yankees won't do the same, and that's a 4-game set.

    Nice sweep. Still, looking at this horrific roster I see no reason to get hopeful. Even if the Twins get some players back in the next couple weeks, they're going to need time to shake off the rust. There's just not enough time, not enough talent on the field. It's very likely the Twins go 3-7 over their next 10 games (BOS, at CHISOX, at NYY). I just don't see any way for this goes our way.

    I loved the write-up! Great job Theo, keep it up. As someone who introduces game threads once in a blue moon, I know first hand that writing about the Twins on this site is not an easy task! As a journalism school drop-out, I do recall learning that when covering any event, you lead with the MOST IMPORTANT part of the story and then get to the little details. For example, first paragraph might be something like "The Twins won on a walk-off walk by Gilberto Celestino in the 10th inning to complete a comeback and win their second straight game against the Giants" or something like that. That way, the reader knows the basic facts right away: Twins won, 10th inning, on a walk, by Gilberto, against SF. Then if they want to read more, they can. But they don't have to. That's it for unsolicited advice from a j-school dropout. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

    Don't see how this team wins a series against any team not named Detroit or KC the rest of the year. Honestly don't. And I'm not shocked or surprised, the team looked cooked a week before the ASG.

    Yeah it's over. They can't score runs against the TEXAS RANGERS. Not just one night, but for 4 straight games. At home. Embarrassing. At this point I'd prefer they just end the season now just to save us the agony of checking the scoreboard for the next month. It's extremely likely they lose all 3 in Houston, then split with SF, go 1-2 against the Red Sox, 1-2 against the White Sox and then get swept by the Yanks in NY. That'll put them at 4-12 over their next 16 games. Even if they do better than that (5-11, 6-10) they'll still be below .500 by Sept. 8. The Correa experiment was bold but it unfortunately didn't work out. Shows how bandboxes like MinuteMaid can make guys look way better offensively than they really are. Trevor Story hasn't been that good either after leaving Coors. Not sure how anyone can truly believe this team has a chance at finishing .500, let alone the division at this point.

    It's not Rocco's fault that Buxton, Correa, Kepler and Polanco can't hit. Losing a series at home against a poor Texas team in late August with the division on the line? It's over folks. And it has been for a while. The coffin is ready and the nails are in hand. When the Twins head to NYY for a 4-game set to start September, and something tells me the Yankees will be bringing the hammer.
