  1. And . . . a 14-1 pasting at the hands of the Red Sox to start the spring (we did get 2 hits though) just adds some extra juice to our current roster angst. Why do we always seem to start out like we're 2 weeks behind everybody else?
  2. The Yankees had seen enough of Torres at shortstop, moved him to 2B and Urshela to SS to finish last season. Manager Aaron Boone even announced Urshela as the starting shortstop beginning spring training. If we keep him, I wouldn't be surprised if he's the starting shortstop opening day for the Twins. A team could do a lot worse than having Urshela at ss.
  3. My crazy hunch here is we're lining up pieces for a trade with the Marlins for one of their starters. I have a hard time picturing Sanchez and Urshela in a Twins uniform, especially Sanchez.
  4. Hey, has anybody done any prospect ratings?
  5. You might be right about Smeltzer having the delay benefit. Maybe he can become Jamie Moyer II.
  6. I'm not in favor of banning the shifts but if they do I hope they limit it to 2 infielders have to be on each side of the diamond with the limit allowing a defender to "straddle" the line between home and 2b.
  7. I think Palacios and Strotman have the most to gain from a good early showing.
  8. We "lovingly" called him Coconut Head. When he came up to bat, we'd yell, "Hey Coconut Head!". I can't really remember why. Powell got traded to Toronto and when I went to a few games there in 1982 at Exhibition Stadium (which I always thought meant an exhibition on how NOT to build a ballpark) I informed the few fans around me that his nickname was Coconut Head, which they thought was great inside knowledge and I instructed them on it's proper usage. So he came up to pinch hit and we all yelled, "Hey Coconut Head!" You could see him pause and slyly look around like oh crap, those dudes from Minnesota are here. I think he got a base hit. Good fun.
  9. That would be awesome for him, the Twins and especially Twin's fans.
  10. I thought so myself but used Baseball Trade Values website and it had the Twins as a slight underpay (pffft) and just went with it to post here as something to talk about cuz it's not like we have any actual baseball activity to talk about other than minor league signings. I mean, they have Sano at minus 7.1 median trade value . . . really? I like Walls as a possible shortstop; maybe they would take Sano for Walls?
  11. Sign lefty starter Kwang Hyun Kim for 2 years at total $8M. Sign reliever Rich Rodriguez for 2 years at total $3.4M. Trade pitcher Matt Canterino and outfielder Emmanuel Rodriguez to the Rays for shortstop Taylor Walls.
  12. Jermaine Palacios called. Wanted to let everybody know that after a solid AA season last year and tearing it up in Venezuela this winter he might be worth a look at shortstop this spring/summer or whenever we play baseball again.
  13. The ball jumped off Bobby Darwin's bat with what seemed kind of a booming sound. He had a rather long swing but when he connected, you knew it. With father time catching up with Killebrew and Tony-o running around on one knee, Bobby Darwin's bat was key in the middle of the Twin's lineup 1972-74.
  14. Looks like he can be pretty tough on lefties with that left of rubber set-up and pitch motion that makes some pitches look like they're moving away from a left handed hitter. Winder winds and deals . . .
  15. From today: "The meeting lasted less than an hour, according to Joon Lee of ESPN, with the players coming away “unimpressed” — a word used by Lee, Tim Healey of Newsday and Bob Nightengale of USA Today. On the other hand, Michael Silverman of the Boston Globe reports that the league is “underwhelmed by underwhelmed MLBPA.” - Darragh McDonald of MLB Rumors. Hmm, underwhelmed by their underwhelmedness. I think we have a ways to go yet.
  16. I feel just the opposite. Some of the highest quality viewing is watching pitchers bat even if it is a poor hitter flailing away at the plate. "Big Sexy" at bats were a thing of pure entertainment. Some pitchers are good hitters which gives them an advantage in games they pitch, and sometimes the worst hitting pitcher gets a hit to change the dynamics of a game. Yes a lot of pitcher at-bats is trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but there's good action in that. The DH just introduces another grooved swing looking to go deep . . .whoopee. p.s. If you haven't seen Bartolo Colon's one career homer which he hit off of James Shields in Petco in 2016 you gotta see it; great fun. Even the San Diego fans went nutz!
  17. And now the owners want to mess with the minor leaguers and not pay them during spring training. Time for a new league.
  18. No worries mate. I think the rude bar is set pretty high when it comes to labor negotiations. ? I tend to side with the Players Association if for no other reason that they are bargaining from a disadvantage; the owners don't open their books enough to know the full financial picture.
