  1. Very true, I'm also a very willing novice. I just hope when the vet me, they don't dig too deep into the record of my fantasy teams.
  2. I dealt in hyperbole for sure, but they won't be getting a Sean Peyton or Jim Harbaugh. I doubt even a Brian Flores would accept that job, he'd probably want to wait for a spot that has more stability. Frank Reich was pretty well thought of, if another experienced HC, like Sean McDermott or Mike Vrabel or Brian Daboll or Mike McCarthy end up getting a surprising ax this winter, I can't see them accepting the job with that sideshow either. Still probably has to be a novice desperate to get their foot in the door.
  3. Very true. Fortunately, you'd be hard pressed to find more incompetent organizations than the Angels and Pirates. Their next logo changes need to be competing Gomer Pyles, one wearing wings, the other wearing an eye patch. Either way, Seattle and Miami are the teams with pitching to spare but offenses in need, so those would be my prime targets.
  4. I'm willing to trade Lee for pitching in Seattle or Miami. Not the rentals though. Though, I don't think I want the rentals in any case; I don't want to do this again next year. Get someone that can pair up with Lopez for the next several years. I'm thinking if Lee is traded though, he doesn't get packaged with another infielder in Polanco, he gets paired with Kepler or other prospects.
  5. Typically, 'bad news' will occur in Twins fandom, the front office will wait until what seems to be an eternity until we're all foaming at the mouth and tearing each others' throats out, then they'll make a move that will quell the mob.
  6. "Broadly speaking, the team has two options: they could acquire a top-tier starter like Corbin Burnes or Logan Gilbert, thickening their bunch at the top of the rotation at the cost of serious prospect capital. The upside in wielding another great starter is obvious, but such a deal would also protect them from the chaos and uncertainty involved in waiting until the trade deadline to make a move, where teams can hike up prices, and the only mercy is for those with stable elbows. Minnesota tried this route once with Tyler Mahle, which may push them to act now. They could also go the innings-eater route. Acquiring a Lucas Giolito or Mike Clevinger isn’t sexy, but it would at least give them extra protection if the ligament gods frown upon the team on any given day next year. In the end, the goal should be to knock Varland into the same role Ober occupied in 2023." If they plan to continue to pace the AL Central and aspire for a championship, doing anything short of getting another top of the rotation arm should be off the table. I'm happy to have them later in the rotation, but Ryan/Ober/Paddock as a #2 starter would disqualify this team as a legit contender. They have to go get another big time arm. And losing Gray and Maeda changes nothing. This team was NEVER going to sign a top of the rotation arm in free agency.
  7. Yeah, there are other NFL owners who are worse people, but Tepper might be the worst at running a football team. Well, maybe 2nd worst after the Bidwells. Who would want to coach in Carolina now?
  8. I don't think it's happening first ballot. I saw one ballot from Adam Rubin on line, he voted for David Wright and Chase Utley, no Mauer. https://www.si.com/mlb/yankees/news/new-york-yankees-gary-sheffield-first-hall-of-fame-vote-2024-matt9 Surprising, I know, an ESPN guy plugging Phillies and Mets players.
  9. Yeah, I wonder if Salah had much input on the Hackett signing. Because if he didn't, that organization has done everything they could do to drown the guy.
  10. Fine by me, but I would then expect Ryan or Ober to be involved in discussions for a trade for a higher caliber starter.
  11. I always thought he was pretty dang bad. I probably would have gone with Boyle too if only because he's had less opportunity to be bad. Crazy how bad Zach Wilson is though. Rick Mirer and Ryan Leaf are perhaps two #2 overall picked QB busts of all time, and Zach Wilson's QBR is significantly worse than both of them.
  12. Ouch. If you're able to saw him open that far, I suspect it will impact impact his game negatively.
  13. I'm personally looking forward to see Camargo and Cossetti, and if you have a back up like Hedges, Barnhart, Stallings or Alfaro on a small deal, the team isn't going to have to think too hard about replacing them if necessary*. And it's not like we're looking at significant changes in floors or ceilings between those guys and Vazquez. *I can't stress the if necessary enough. I'm not saying to hand the job to the kids, just have an out from an underperforming vet in case it turns out to be the better option.
  14. But we have an eight year career from Max Kepler to draw conclusions from. I think it's reasonably safe to say that the odds are much higher that he's more likely to disappoint than to excel. I mean if I was looking at this objectively and had little knowledge of Kepler, I'd have little faith that a 31-year-old finally became a star player, and I'd want little to do with him:
  15. Suwinski, and Moniak are obviously interesting, but those two and Adell would seem to compound the team's already unsustainable strikeout problem. It's interesting that Carlson's offensive decline coincided with a sharp drop in his K%. Coincidence? Neither Cardinal has me very interested but Festa is the only player listed that I'd have any kind of reservation about moving so I wouldn't put up much of an objection. But I really think everyone needs to pay attention to the active roster. Jeffers, Lewis, Castro, Kepler, Wallner, Kirilloff, Farmer, Polanco, Julien, Vazquez, Correa and Buxton are all basically locks. That's 12 offensive players and makes Gordon/Larnach the "easy" removals. This team does not have a ton of flexibility to add MLB deals for hitters. If they start signing and trading for more bats, they have to start planning on removing some of the vets. The math just doesn't work otherwise.
  16. July in Vegas, average high of 105 degrees. Sounds like a dream vacation!
  17. Hard to blame him. Statistics show that 98% of all drunk driving arrests are white billionaire men. And no, I don't feel the need to source those numbers since it's so obviously true.
  18. And for me the money is the reason for the problem, not the problem itself. If you have a mitt-first catcher, I want the team to have the flexibility to option him or DFA him through the season. You probably don't do that with a guy still on the books for 20M.
  19. This will be a curious case. Rosario was part of the last Bomba-squad model draft, since then the Twins have really focused on higher contact hitters. I don't know enough about him, but his promotions will probably depend if the strikeouts are due to free swinging, or from not swinging enough as the Twins are clearly differentiating between those two things lately.
  20. I'm not sure if anyone has said it out loud, but are we sure Jefferson isn't still out because he wants a new contract? I know I'm not supposed to broach that subject, but they have a bye next week so there's next to no chance he's activated to play against the lowly Bears. I have to think at some point in the two weeks between games, there will start to be rumblings about this.
  21. I'm all on board with flipping the other vets, however, I've never liked Vazquez. His signing last year seemed to be a mirror image of the Jason Castro situation. He's basically been a terrible hitter his entire career outside of two full seasons. Good in 2019 (where have we heard that before?) plus a half season of 2020 and 2022. I expect he'll be better than last year, but not to a degree that I'd care to promise him a roster spot all season. And that seems to be my theme this year. Clear out and stay away from vets with inconsistent track records. Roster the vets who reliably hit the ball every year, or turn it over to the young guys. If you're going to gamble, gamble on the guys you pay peanuts, not the guys that are going to crunch the payroll.
  22. I think Miller is the Seattle pitcher I like the least (my opinion on this seems to change regularly) so I'd probably not trade Lee for him, but I'd include Lee for the others. Not that I'd hand Lee over without a fight. I'd push to keep him until it's clear it can't be done.
  23. I like the idea of keeping Polanco more than Kepler as Polanco is a consistently better hitter, but I'd still like to try to find a better bat to improve the lineup, and 1st base seems to be the best option for that.
  24. Still gives you some roster flexibility. Giving his job to Camargo, some low priced journeyman or maybe Cossetti later in the year would allow the team to demote/promote/DFA as they please throughout the season. Keeping Vazquez is basically just nailing his dead money to the roster all year long.
  25. Yeah, there are guys in AAA the team could plug in, but that's not the MO, and it's fine with me as I know how unappetizing that is to most folks. But the offensive side of the roster is pretty much already locked up. The last spot on the bench, the Larnach/Gordon/Miranda spot is basically the only available seat at the table, so unless another player (Kepler, Polanco, etc) are removed from the equation, there's not much room to improve the offense. I think combining the savings of Kepler with the remaining free agent money will easily get you back a better player than Kepler. And really, I only like three free agents. Turner and Hoskins, who would bump Kirilloff back to the OF, or Lourdes Gurriel. All of whom have a long track record of being an above average hitter.
