  1. “It was easy to imagine a scenario whereby Buxton returns and struggles to produce on either side of the ball. Instead, he’s shown his actual value in recent weeks.” In other words, it’s the same old story - we’re in yet another “Buxton flashy period,” when one can be tempted to believe we’ve arrived at the proverbial promised land. (yawns) I’ll look for your article when BB has landed once again on the IL.
  2. Having lived and worked abroad for many years, and speaking my second language (German) at work every day, it still sometimes happened that I got caught off guard by a question or struggled for the exact word or phrase in a stressful moment. So yes, absolutely: teams need to do a better job of ensuring players - their employees - are supported during postgame interviews.
  3. Actually, given Buxton’s track record of games played, he actually has been acquired for that reason.
  4. In other words, Margot should expect to play an awful lot of games.
  5. Really, enough already about counting on Buxton in 2024. “Buxton is a significant question mark, as he's reached 100 games played in center field once in his career (2017) and hasn't reached 80 games played at the position since 2019.” Oh, and let’s also add that he’s now 30 years old.
  6. “That quartet of veteran players can help the Twins win next season, and it only makes sense for the club to move one of them if it improves the team.” Actually it makes sense to move one or more of these four players if it reduces the team’s total 2024 salary expenditures. The Twins are a business, tricky broadcast revenue questions remain, and the bottom line is … well, the bottom line.
  7. “Graterol, whose triple-digit heater ensorceled fans during a late-season debut in 2019.” Ensorceled? Indeed. Way to use the language. I wish my college students were that creative.
  8. “the Twins have played more games (686) without Buxton than with him (670) since he made his debut.” He can be a difference-making player when available. But designing a roster around an enormous question mark is a huge challenge. Will Buxton play 40 games this season, or maybe 90? In which months? Hurt early in the season this time, or later? So Twins FO will need to hold ready an untested prospect for CF, or spend for a quality backup (as in 2023). So while Buxton can earn some of his $15 million salary while playing, that’s partly negated by any spend for the quality backup player required. What a mess.
  9. This list makes for good off-season conversations. Overall I agree with the arguments about who to place on this list, however saying that Walker Jenkins "utterly dominat[ed] the minors" is a real stretch - he has played a grand total of 26 games. Pump the brakes on that one.
  10. Looks and sounds like a great time. I had to miss this event due to travel, so hope to see another similar event soon!
  11. Relax. Joey Gallo won’t be the only player on the field this season. Watch some other ones.
  12. Absolutely right. And a POOR TV contract would be a game changer as well, annually, for years into the future. Remember that bloated Pujols deal with the Angels in 2010? It was in part about beefing up the roster for an impending TV deal negotiation. Overpaying to land Correa could have had the same positive impact.
  13. Here’s one reason I love reading Twins Daily: some interesting articles and good writing, AND also lots of thoughtful comments. This thread is a great example.
  14. Kepler has produced 1.5 WAR this season in 95 games. Over the seasons 2019-2022, according to baseball-reference.com, he has produced 8.6 WAR playing in 398 games. He outperforms his contract, and it isn't close. The Twins have several roster concerns - but data show that RF with Kepler isn't one of them.
  15. What happened this past offseason was a LOCKOUT by MLB owners, not a strike by players. The difference is important.
  16. “some outwardly questioned why the Twins decided to play the game at all given the evening's forecast.” Twins management showed a lack of good judgement last night. Forecast was clear. Thumbs down on them.
  17. Sanchez’s declining stats the past few years lead me to say no to an extension.
  18. Article presents two paths of action, Cody, and is well written. In deciding how best to proceed with Donaldson, I’m stuck on this: “… gamble on the health of Josh Donaldson.” That makes my decision: offload.
  19. One of these statements is a data-driven conclusion. The other, well ...
  20. Exactly right, Brock. Some other American pro sports - NHL, NBA, NFL - have updated their products to provide more customer appeal. MLB players, OTOH, seem proud of trotting out cliches about “playing the game the right way.” And the league has been too slow to respond to three true outcomes dominating games. To MLB: Good luck attracting a new generation of customers.
  21. Six good questions. I’ll argue rebuilding Twins need to answer this one, too: is there a 2022 role for Josh Donaldson (who’ll be 36), or should he be moved before the trade deadline to free up the money? Cot’s Baseball Contracts shows Donaldson is owed $51.5 million (2022-2023 + buyout of 2024 option). With pitching the biggest issue, for me getting off this contract should be a top priority.
  22. Exactly. The expiring contracts in this article may bring a AA or A prospect, and that’s worth looking at. Think back to the 2018 Pressly deal (Celestino, Alcala) or 2019 Dozier deal (Smelzer). But it’s these ticking contracts that could bring an MLB-ready return. Twins just can’t afford to allow Berríos, Buxton, etc to leave after 2022 as FA, for no return. Get those extensions agreed to, or grit the teeth and move these players.
