    Actually, Thorpe was called up yesterday and pitched for Rochester today at noon, I think taking Stewart’s place in the rotation.

    You couldn't do 40-50?? (Okay, I'm really kidding with that.) Has Thorpe moved up officially to AAA yet? I'm seeing he's starting for Rochester tomorrow, per Nate Rowan. edit: oops ... guess this is already being discussed in last night's minor league recap thread

    Even if Granite were off the DL ... why would you send him? It would seem ... a wasteful use of a spot to me, but then, I don't know. I've been baffled by these decisions in the past, so maybe I'm a little 'unclear' the purpose of who goes to the AFL or not.

    I’m sorry, but comparing what Rodney does, post save, to a 21-gun salute every morning is way off the mark as far as comparison’s go. Talk about over exaggerations. Players do all manner of things after they win, hit a home run, cross the plate to score ... what Rodney does after a save is no different than what any other players do. I appreciate that you and others didn’t like it, but I’d be careful about insinuating he was lying about it.

    Thad Levine talked about Stewart on Doogie’s show and mentioned his improvement this past year, saying that not getting added to the 40-man and then going unselected really lit a fire under him, not that he hasn’t worked hard, but he really did this past year.

    Ha! I’d have paid good money to see that, and, he’d probably have a following who’d crow in the stands after every save to go along with it!

    I guess we’ll disagree on that ... I think the motivation does matter. Many do repetitive things for different reasons. I guess I don’t consider honoring a close family member as showboating, but whatever. He’s not ours anymore.

    I know this has been discussed before, but I don’t consider honoring his grandfather as showboating. That said, he wasn’t my least favorite Twin, but I could barely watch when he came in to pitch.

    I pretty much agree with this. As I stated earlier, I really think it was more of an emotional response to missing his teammates and friends who he’s relied on the past few years than pointing a finger about business decisions being made, and I get that. I’m still crying over Escobar. I won’t cry over LoMo, but that wasn’t a trade, but it almost feels like a trade ... welcome to the Twins, Tyler Austin!

    I didn't read/hear Erv's comments so seriously or pointed as what some are suggesting. I read them as he's sorry to see his friends go. Yeah, it's not exactly what he said and the exact words he used seem to imply some kind of finger pointing, but Erv knows how this goes. He's not new to baseball nor new to teams struggling and shaking things up. He certainly knows that this is the business end of the game. But ... the teammates and friends who he has relied on over the past few years, are no longer here. Whether it was right or wrong, the FO made a decision and I think Erv's response was more of a personal one rather than a business one.

    And I don’t disagree with that, either. I’m trusting that those who evaluate will know what they’re looking for in their decision-making process. I want to see what he does in this start.

    Maybe all he’s good for is AAA depth; or maybe his ultimate role is as a relieve; or maybe he will be a back end rotation guy. I’d guess that the FO does have some idea of that, but before making decisions on his future want to see what he can do where he is right now. I don’t have any issue with that as it is most definitely decision time about his future one way or the other. I think the FO is more certain of the direction of the others. I don’t know, it’s just my guess. It’s not like Kohl hasn’t earned a start. Yes, I get that most of us would rather see one of the others mentioned ... so would I, especially Gonsalves ... but Gonsalves just pitched. We hear all the time you can never have too many arms and I’d like to see what Kohl can or can’t do. I’m more hopeful of the other pitchers, but I still want to see what Kohl does, good or bad. But I really hope that Gonsalves is the next one up making the next open start.

    Thorpe lost two years of development time due to injury and illness. And he’s still only 22. I’m hoping we see him next year, and I’m hopeful his potential exceeds Stewart’s. Call ups aren’t about deserving it from fan perspective. We need to make decisions on Stewart at the end of THIS season. The time for Stewart is now, not because he’s ‘deserving’ but because we need to see what he can do. And it’s not like Stewart hasn’t worked hard and isn’t deserving of an opportunity to show what he can do. We’re out of it, let’s evaluate what he has. That’s what this is about.

    I think you answered your own why in your post. Gonsalves just pitched, they already know what they have in Romero and he definitely figures into the future, and Thorpe is already pretty high in innings, is only in AA and isn’t really ready. We need to see what Kohl has before the end of this season. This is, IMO, a really good move and a good time to make it.

    Color me surprised, which is a nice change from disappointed. It’s time to see what Stewart has and how it plays in the majors. Not convinced he stays as a starter if he eventually sticks in the MLB, but it’s time to see him and see what we have. He will need to be protected this year anyway, and there is currently space on the 40-man, so it’s as good a time as any. Usually we are perplexed wondering why we are seeing certain players, but I think this is a good and sound move. As much as I’d like to see Gonsalves, we knew it wasn’t going to be him since he just pitched.
