  1. Cron established himself last year. That's it. Before that he was on the shuttle just like Austin. Who's to say Austin wouldn't be in CJ Cron's shoes in 2019 as a 28 year old established MLB player? If both players are in the lineup, boy, there goes your flexibility. You're stuck with 2 bench players on days when Cron needs a day off at 1B. I very much prefer a DH option that can play somewhere else besides 1B.
  2. Right, but how are they going to determine who's the better player in 2 weeks of spring training? They have to release him within the first 16 days of ST in order to pay him 30 days termination salary (~$500k) if they cut him anytime after the 16th day through the end of ST they will pay him 45 days termination pay (~$750k) Since Austin and Cron are mostly redundant I don't see the point in picking him up in the first place.
  3. I don't know if it's wrong to project Austin and Cron producing similar numbers in a scenario where they each have 500 ABs... Also, admittedly I'm still a little jaded from the past regime's handling of players without options remaining. Mainly, they stuck like glue, roster construction be damned. I haven't paid as close attention to how Falvine handles players without options. If there's redundancy, I want a quick resolution.
  4. Couldn't this have been said about Cron before he received 500 at-bats last season?
  5. Hey now, the money adds up! If they release him in ST they still have to pay him ~$500k for him to go away. That's a lot of dome dogs.
  6. I think you laid out the Crons very well. Which is why this move is puzzling on the surface. I see redundancy with Austin already on roster, unless he was picked up to replace Austin entirely. This pick up doesn't jive with the pro-versatility movement around the league.
  7. Did you cry typing that? Because I'm crying reading that sentence.
  8. Impossible to say until the Twins use the theoretical "savings" to sign another player. If they're swimming in the kiddie pool for 1B/DH I look forward to them diving in the deep end for pitching.
  9. If Cron or Austin takes up one of the three possible bench spots.... Well, maybe TR was on to something with Park, Mauer, and Vargas on the same roster in 2016.
  10. What do you call a CJ Cron HR? Cron Bomb? Cron Dong?
  11. Jason Bartlett! Ex-Twin turned Ex-Ray turned BACK into an ex-Twin!
  12. I hope they settle the redundancy concern soon. Though if the Twins want to be hip, now, with it and wow like the Rays, they probably shouldn't dedicate $5 million to a player who's not a big upgrade to who they have already making $550k.
  13. Every dollar counts with this small market team! Just ask Jim Pohlad, who doesn't FEEL like it's necessary to spend $23 million just because Mauer's contract is off the books.
  14. Same reason why we fear Scott Boras clients... Irrational feelings. I'm not going to trust people from Tampa coming off career seasons. There's probably a valid reason why they're letting him go for nothing... And why this is his 3rd team in 3 seasons.
  15. This is how you build a sustainable contender I guess... By continuing to swim in the shallow pool hoping you find a power hitter for $5 million.
  16. Let's hope this works out better than the last Tampa 1B coming off a career year.
  17. I echo others in being cautiously optimistic. Seems like the proper coaching staff is in place to help recoup the lost MPH on his fastball. If it's clear he doesn't have it they should be able to eat a portion of the money owed and move him to another rebuilding team.
  18. Great win for the Gophers!
  19. I'm watching Michigan vs. Ohio State today and boy is this a pleasure to watch compared to our Gophers.
  20. The Kirilloff pick looks really good right now. Still a long ways to go with him. I wish he got his feet wet in AA for the last month of the season. He was making a mockery of A ball. The real test will be mastering AA... If he's just as good after a few months I'll be beating the drum to call him up directly from AA.
  21. He's left handed, currently breathing, and a lot of teams are still tanking at the MLB level. I agree someone will take a flyer on him.
  22. Most mid-market teams like the Twins are profitable before they even step on the field because of everything you mentioned, plus revenue sharing from the big market teams. Ticket sales, concessions, and merchandise are the cherry on top of already absurd profits.
  23. Agreed. It also doesn't take into consideration the other $20+ million off the books as well releasing Morrison, Erv, Dozier, etc.
  24. 6th overall pick in 2015 is not worthwhile to stash on the 40 man... What a shame.
  25. People in sports sure know how to spin the word 'rebuilding' into a positive these days... If they're not competing for a playoff spot, they're rebuilding. Evidently now the Twins are 'building' and the Gophers football team is in 'Year 1 of building.' So positive!
