  1. You can blame the manager, but he just doesn't have the horses. Two of the relievers who were given to him as key arms for this bullpen, Pagán and Duffey, are unusable in high leverage spots. He's basically got Duran, a big gap, and then Jax and Thielbar, then another big gap. Re: this afternoon, despite what people seem to think, you can't use Duran every game for two innings. With the the #9 guy coming up to start the 8th, it's not an obvious situation to throw in your best arm. Pagán was put in a position to succeed and he didn't. Eventually someone else has to step up. I'd like to see Moran get more play. Hamilton and Sisk are pitching well in St. Paul. Cotton has been decent with the Twins, but not exactly high leverage. Sooner rather than later there needs to be a trade for that second high leverage arm.
  2. Alright, I'm convinced. Lets trade for him immediately. Can he be in Cleveland before 7?
  3. I've said some mean things about Thielbar this year, but I looked at the underlying numbers and honestly he's mainly getting unlucky. His XWOBA is slightly improved from last year, Baseball Savant has it in the top quarter of the league. His main issue has been an increase in walks. In the same vein, I hope to see the Twins stick with Jovani Moran. His walks are also too high, but he's so difficult to hit otherwise. I think he's got high leverage stuff if he can harness it. At any rate, the Twins need to trade for another high leverage arm. If they make the playoffs, the bullpen should look something like: Highest Leverage: Duran Second Highest Leverage: [Trade] Third Highest Leverage: Jax Primary Lefty: Thielbar Secondary Lefty: Moran Best Performing of the Rest: ??? Cotton??? Second Best Performing of the Rest: ??? Long Relief: Smeltzer
  4. Joe Smith continues to pitch like Chase De Jong when the stakes are low, and like Joe Nathan when they're high. If we're not going to be able to use Duffey or Thornburg, even with the rest of the bullpen hanging on by a thread in terms of wear and tear, then maybe we should replace them with relievers we can use. Honestly, Thornburg would've been a good option for the 9th last night. He was fresh and he's had lots of MLB experience. Not an ideal closer by any stretch, but not a giveaway.
  5. I'd like to see Winder be a starter with the Twins, and Smeltzer moved to the piggy-back role. Earlier this year, Winder was better as a starter, and in the past Smeltzer has been just fine coming in as a reliever.
  6. Who knows, but it feels like Balazovic might benefit from some R&R, because this strategy of having him pitch through whatever discomfort he is feeling is not working out.
  7. The Twins are the best team in the worst or second worst division in baseball. I'm not sure that this is a time when you start selling off your future and going into win-now mode.
  8. Jovani Moran could be that high leverage relief arm for the Twins. I'm a bit disappointed that they sent him down for that reason, but in St. Paul he'll be the undisputed closer and so will at least get chances in high leverage spots. If he can cut down on the walks, he'll be unhittable. Matt Canterino is the other name who could step into that high leverage role. I don't know what the Twins are doing by sending him out with a bunch of three inning starts. He could be up in the majors by August if they prioritize moving him to the bullpen.
  9. Shouldn't Winder be making a second rehab start with the Saints this week? Should be about time to start seeing more promotions. Glad to see Sisk start things off by moving to AAA. He's had a great year and may add to the Twins options in lefty relief along with Moran and Coulombe. Surely we will see Canterino move up soon? He's proved all that he can at AA and should be in line for a late summer debut in relief for the Twins if he continues to pitch well. Varland should also be moving up, David Festa should be advancing to take his place, and Travis Adams should be moving up to take his.
  10. When Joe Smith comes on to start an inning, he inevitably gives up a run. But when Joe Smith comes on with bases loaded, nobody out, and Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Ted Williams up to bat, he's lights out with the minimum number of pitches.
  11. Looks like an airplane hangar.
  12. Thielbar and Pagan, who have been much maligned (often with good reason) came up huge last night to stop the bullpen bleeding. The bullpen is getting stretched. I expect we'll see Cano optioned (does Megill have options?) and Moran recalled today. Six innings from Gray would be a big boost.
  13. Twins hit so many times to the opposite field I started to wonder if it was something they have been working on.
  14. Lewis will come back soon enough with more experience at other positions. Folks should calm down a bit.
  15. Winder should be starting outright, he's clearly more comfortable in that role than as a piggyback starter.
  16. I have to say that I doubted Duffey and Thielbar at the start of the season (and frankly, I still doubt Duffey), but the way both have recovered from disastrous starts has been impressive.
  17. If I remember, this was the book on Miranda before last year. Great ball-to-bat skills, but wasn't doing enough about it. Last year, he reportedly got more selective with his approach. It's seemed to me like he just needs to get back to that. We've seen (and hopefully he has seen) that he can hit pitches at a major league level. Now he needs to start choosing which ones to hit and which ones to ignore.
  18. Certainly expect him to move up to Wichita soon. But he's definitely not going to appear on prospect lists unless he keeps pitching like this up to at least St. Paul this year. He's pretty old for A+.
  19. Marco Raya should be headed to Cedar Rapids this summer. Noah Miller seems pretty good. It's so early but I wonder if we will eventually see him take over short and displace Royce Lewis to second. Glad to see Kirilloff go 4-7, but the biggest casualty of his wrist injuries seems to have been his power.
  20. The Twins bullpen is full of a lot of guys who I don't really trust but who keep coming out every day and doing a great job. In particular, I don't quite get how Coulombe, Duffey, and Stashak are doing it with seemingly below-average stuff, but they keep putting up zeroes. Thielbar also is looking good with his array of slow bendy stuff. Pagan is getting unbelievably lucky, but he can put his fastball by anyone if he can locate it. Duran, Jax, and Smith are about the only guys I really trust. Maybe Moran too if he comes up and deals again.
