All of this stuff is easy to look up. He's 22 going on 23 in September. He's had two/three poor starts in a row, but before that, he had a scoreless innings streak of over 25 innings. He's got plenty of time and will get plenty more opportunities to improve.

Isn't the word on Varland that he doesn't have enough pitches to stick as a starter? (Doesn't seem to stop Lance Lynn, but whatever.) It does feel like he could race through the minors if they would use him as a bullpen option. But with the numbers he's put up so far, it's hard to argue with the current path he's on. Surely he'll get a cup of coffee with Wichita by the end of the season.

Twins Claim Edgar Garcia off Waivers
Alex Schieferdecker replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Four pitches seems like too many for a reliever. Not that other teams haven't already tried this, but I imagine the Twins will tell him to focus on only a couple of those. -
With a name like that, he's sure to be a big success.

Twins Acquire RHP John Gant for J.A. Happ
Alex Schieferdecker replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Could've traded Happ for half off a Killebrew root beer and I would've been satisfied. An actual major league pitcher who has improved in the bullpen and a low-end prospect is even better.- 67 replies

José Berríos Traded to Blue Jays
Alex Schieferdecker replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems like a big return, so a good deal from the Twins perspective. Will miss Berrios, wish him all the luck with Toronto. He's always looked good in light blue, and they've got the best light blue uniforms in the league.- 304 replies

I hope to see Jovani Moran called up as soon as possible. He has struggled in the second inning of some of his appearances for St. Paul, but that won't be as big of an issue if he were with the Twins. He came in last night and struck out the side in his first inning of work. Also: why is Josh Winder apparently not scheduled to pitch this week? Is he also on standby like Barnes?

Not that the stats matter, but poor Jovani Moran got a rough deal with 2 ER last night. The first one came from a walk, a balk, (not idea if it was the right call or not, but it got Toby Gardenhire tossed), a stolen base, and a groundout . The second was an inherited runner. Moran walked a guy, and then Ian Gibault came in and was just unbelievably awful (walk, walk, single). In between that, Moran worked around an error with a huge K of Witt Jr. He struck out three of his five outs. He was really good, the statline doesn't really tell the story.

I wonder what percentage chance folks might give to Winder and Balazovic making next season's opening day rotation? The question is presumptuous but not premature at this point. Both are clearly on track to make some late-season starts for the Twins. We haven't seen the Twins come out of Spring Training with a couple of rookies on the staff in a while, but that's because there hasn't been this wave of pitching talent coming up in a while. Somewhere between 20-30% seems plausible to me. Not likely but also not farfetched.

That Wind Surge walk-off sure is something. As dreadful as the Twins pitching has been this year, it really feels like the team is on the cusp of a big wave of promising prospects. Balazovic and Winder seem to have real front-of-the-rotation potential. Ober has what it takes to stick at the back-end. Canterino and Duran might have some significant reliever risk at this point, but they have Karinchak/Clase-esque ceilings there and we need help in the bullpen too. Also in the bullpen, Moran seems likely to debut later this year. Hard not to be excited about the arms that the Twins have in the system, while knocking on wood that they stay healthy. The flip side is that the system's hitters really don't look to be as promising, once you get past Miranda. Sabato was billed as one of the most pro-ready hitters in his class, and he's been dreadful. Rooker might be back with the Twins if/when Cruz is traded, but it's probably his last chance to make an impact. Celestino isn't ready, and I'm worried that playing infrequently with the Twins isn't great for his development.

Game Recap: Twins 12, Tigers 9
Alex Schieferdecker replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Jose Berrios pitching no-hit ball, then falling apart, then putting it back together again for two innings was one of the weirder Twins pitching performances I've seen in a while. But we've learned to expect that kind of one-inning meltdown from him. On the other hand, Taylor Rodgers letting the 6, 7, and 8 guys reach base, and the 9 guy to hit a grand slam, all in ten pitches, then to strike out the 1, 2, and 3 guys... that was the most confounding pitching performance I think I've ever seen. -
Minor League Report (7/8): Wander Walks it Off
Alex Schieferdecker replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I asked Aaron Gleeman about this on Twitter a week ago and he pointed out to me that Hamilton was averaging almost a walk an inning. Since that conversation, he's thrown four and a third walkless innings, so if he keeps that up, a promotion will follow quickly.- 13 replies

Minor League Report (7/7): Bullpens Bear Down
Alex Schieferdecker replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The Twins must truly be cursed to have their breakout pitching prospect hit with a line drive on his second AAA start. Hopefully it is as minor as we've been led to believe. Worth mentioning that of Winder's three runs allowed in AAA so far, two of them didn't score on his watch, but were thanks to the relief pitching that followed him. -
It's a good top five, but I'm not sure if Canterino and Duran will end up as starters, and their injury concerns are a big worry. Then again, it wouldn't be the end of the world if the Twins end up with those two coming out of the bullpen and the likes of Balazovic and Winder starting games.

We should expect big "jumps" in the rankings this year, given how last year was completely lost and so nobody had much to go on. We heard a bunch about Winder being the Instructional League ace and Twins scouts have reportedly talked up Miranda forever, but it wasn't possible to determine how much substance there was. Now that play has started and we can make major corrections. Winder does seem a bit low to me still. Canterino, Duran, Balazovic, Miranda, and Lewis are a compelling top five, but Winder might be ahead of Canterino at this point, due to concerns about the latter's health and questions about whether he is destined to ultimately be a (high leverage elite) reliever. In contrast, Winder seems like he could be a 2-3 starter, still with a hint of upside beyond that.

Varland will need to start getting promoted soon if he is going to have a shot at making the majors in his career. But his results in Low A have been lights out, if memory serves, he's had just a single poor outing. Hopefully he will be bumped up shortly now that his walks have decreased. He may ultimately end up as a hard-throwing bullpen option as well.

Glad to see Winder and Miranda moved up. Funny to me that Jovani Moran remains at AA. Speaking of the bullpen, surely Ian Hamilton will be the next guy called up to the Twins. Andrew Vasquez may deserve another shot, even though he's a lefty and even though his last outing was one of the worst in Twins history.
