Article: GM For A Deadline, Part One
dbminn replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wasn't using Hosmer to defend Escobar. Like I said, the Hosmer contract was outrageous. I only meant to cross you up where reality got really funny.- 77 replies

Article: GM For A Deadline, Part One
dbminn replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While berating another forum member's opinion, you asked if anyone had received a QO that had a three year WAR less than 2.I used the three years before FA for Escobar that you used in your comment (I assumed you weren't considering 2018 a full year). I tried to do the same with Hosmer. Manipulating to 600 PA is what most people do when comparing someone has been used as a utility player vs an everyday player. In any case, I fulfilled your question on three-year WAR.- 77 replies

Article: GM For A Deadline, Part One
dbminn replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here's a good one - Eric Hosmer, who was given a QO after 2017. 2014-2016: 3.5 fWAR in 1881 PA. (1.1 WAR/600 PA) 2017: 4.1 fWAR in 671 PA (3.7 WAR/600 PA) Escobar: 2015-2017: 3.4 fWAR in 1322 PA (1.5 WAR/600) 2018: 2.1 fWAR in 376 PA (3.4 WAR/600) What's really funny, Hosmer turned down the QO and signed an 8yr/$144M contract!! Of course the Hosmer contract is outrageous... But you asked!- 77 replies

Thanks for the fine update. Cedar Rapids has been really interesting to follow this year. Two CR players not listed have been good the last 28 days - Jose Miranda (.315/.354/.533) and Trey Cabbage (.273/.368/.515). The Twins have a lot of upside in the 21 and under crowd.

Article: 2018 Twins Midseason Top Prospect List: 1-5

What's really exciting is he throws 100 and doesn't walk 5 per 9 innings! He looks under control when he pitches, which is great considering his age.- 74 replies

Article: MIN 5, TB 1: Who’s the Snub?
dbminn replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gibson looked strong the first seven innings. (I feel asleep on the couch before the 8th and woke up to a fishing show). The lineup looks better with Polanco back, although I'm still mad at him. -
Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Second Half Star
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I pretty much agree. When he gets pull happy, he hits a lot of weak grounders to the right side. But I've liked the way Kepler has hit the ball hard to the left side the past few games. I'm betting he'll be better than the last few months. Then again, I'm hoping Buxton returns and now I hear he's been pulled because of a hand injury at AAA. Probably should just totally agree with you.- 16 replies

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Second Half Star
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dozier, if he's still with the Twins. I think he'll be traded, so my alternate pick is Polanco. I think the whole offense will improve a lot. I expect Sano to return and hit well after the break, Kepler can't have a .245 BABIP all year, and Polanco extends the lineup. I'm going out on a limb, but I think Buxton will help the team too. The bench/DH will be better because of the three additions to the roster (Sano, Polanco and Buxton). I'm assuming Escobar stays with the team. If he goes along with Dozier, the offense will be about the same as the first half.- 16 replies

Article: MIN 8, KC 5: Twins Recover from Rough Start
dbminn replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins took 6 of 7 against a couple of bad teams. Just what they needed to do. Looking forward to tomorrow's game against a team playing well. Easy to be cynical, I guess. I'm enjoying the streak.- 39 replies

Nick Gordon, Lamonte Wade and Infield Fly Balls
dbminn commented on jorgenswest's blog entry in Blog jorgenswest
It's a good topic that hasn't been fully explored. Here's a fairly recent FG article on the relatively high IFFB rates in the minors compared to MLB. Might give you some more food for thought. I've thought that hitters who pop up have a hard time laying off high fastballs and an uppercut swing, but that's just conjecture on my part. I hope you keep looking at the issue. By the way, Joe Mauer is the king of not hitting IFFB - 2.2% of FB for his entire career! -

Article: Revisiting Molitor vs. Lovullo
dbminn replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In May 2018, Arizona lost Robbie Ray and Taijuan Walker to the DL. Also, Jake Lamb and AJ Pollack missed half the games to the DL. Goldschmidt and Peralta gave them a whopping -0.9 WAR while playing the full month. After a 20-8 April, Lovullo was able to rally the team to an 8-19 record in May. Miss key players and veterans don't perform, then managers don't win. The Twins have been without five key players for almost the entire season. Ignoring that impact (and excusing their performance the 2nd half of 2017) is cherry picking. -
Mostly another good day for the top prospects. Arraez now has 109 PA in June and he's rocking at .455/.495/.636. Too small a sample size to say he's a top prospect. A big sample size to be hitting .455, at any level.

Back in late July 1990, I spent a week on top of the Pompano Beach Landfill in Florida. I was managing a group of temp employees, sampling and sorting garbage. The surrounding counties were planning to build a waste-to-energy plant and set up their first recycling programs. The wanted to know what they might need for plant capacities. As you can imagine, the sorting crew was made up of tough guys down on their luck. Pretty much all of them were on probation. Jamaicans, Rednecks and Latinos, they had almost nothing in common - except keeping an eye out for me. It was sweltering on top of the landfill. Mid-90s heat and oppressive humidity, all mixed with the stench of 2,000 tons/day of freshly delivered trash. I made it to the fourth day. I remember my boss coming to the top of the hill, telling me he was taking my place. Three hours later, I woke up in the air-conditioned scale house, unable to open my eyes. They had caked shut with the salt of my sweat. Later, I was informed that the crew had told one of the truck drivers that "the Yankee didn't look so good" and asked the driver to get help on his way out. I was able to finish the job the following day. As always, we celebrated with the temp crew by buying pizza with, what we told them, was the money earned from the aluminum they had separated. I thanked them for saving my ass. As I unpacked my triple-bagged work clothes back in St Paul, I vowed I would never go to Florida in the summer again. But man, Ft Myers is tempting me.

One week left to decide who's going to be hitter of the month. Current slash lines: Kirilloff: .393/.446/.714 (1.160 OPS) Arraez: .451/.489/.659 (1.148 OPS) Both have played 20 games in June. Add in Blankenhorn and Rortvedt and you have a good group of 21 and under players at Ft Myers. If they only had a young SS...

How our ex-Twins are doing - do want any back?
dbminn commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
I'd want Ramos as my C. I have no regrets about the trade. Capps did his job at the end of 2010: 2-0/16 Saves/2.00 ERA. Enjoyed every minute of it. Meanwhile, Ramos averaged less than 2.0 WAR over six seasons with the Nationals. Would've helped very little. And he'd already be gone from the Twins as a free agent. I'll take Hicks in the OF. Rosario has had a good 15 IP for the Cubs. Underlying info isn't great: less than 6 K/9 and a ragged 4.7 BB/9. I wish him luck. With that walk rate, he's going to need it. I do not want to return Escobar for Liriano (Tigers AAA). -
How good were the Fort Myers hitters? Rortvedt has a 2HR/4RBI night and doesn't get a mention in the highlights.

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Fixing the Offense
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dozier needs to step it up and Mauer needs to be healthy for the Twins to stay in the Central race. That's the key right now. Polanco, Buxton and Sano all have to contribute if they are going to compete in the 2nd half. At least one of them has to return to his best offensive form. That's doable but they have to stay within 5 games of the Indians before the break. -
Base Running (Based on 2018 BsR /2017 BsR ranking given for missing players) Three worst baserunners - Kepler , Grossman, Wilson Key missing players - Buxton (1), Polanco (2) Twins are missing their two best baserunners. Grossman has taken a lot of Buxton's at bats. Defense (Based on DRS) Three worst defenders - Esco (at SS), Garver, Sano Key missing players - Buxton (1), Castro (2), Polanco (8) Escobar has been forced to play SS with Polanco out of the lineup. He's a league-average 3B. Garver has replaced Castro. Buxton is one of the best but MIA. RP Management (Appearances / IP - MLB Rank) Current RP - Pressley (4/27), Hildenberger (26/48), Reed (37/38) I won't comment on when RP are called in, but they aren't overworked by MLB standards.

Article: Week in Review: DEFCON 1
dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Excellent article. You've made clear what has to happen - other hitters need to support Eduardo and Eddie. Kepler, Dozier and Morrison have to be better. Mauer needs to be healthy. They all have hit before but they need to start again... soon. Cleveland has nicely offered to run in place. Buxton and Polanco should be back just before the All-Star Break. Sano will hopefully return shortly after. The Twins need to stay within five until that happens. Otherwise, they don't have a chance. I've supported the callup of Gordon. I wouldn't be upset if Wade got some starts in the OF. Maybe they can provide a spark. But IMO, it's up to the established players to turn it around.- 85 replies

Article: Miguel Sano Optioned to Ft. Myers
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm surprised Sano was sent down but he probably needs it. Not every prospect travels and easy path. As far as homegrown players, the Twins had the most of any team that made the playoffs last year with 14. https://www.mlb.com/news/how-the-postseason-teams-built-playoff-rosters/c-256659274 -
Since June 1, Luis Arraez has slashed .438/.482/.688 at Ft Myers. He missed all but the first three games of 2017 and had a horrible first two months this year. I'm really glad he's figured it out.
