I support the 26-man roster if they limit pitchers to 13 spots. During the past 30+ years, pitching staffs have increased from 10 to 13 for most teams. There are now 8 RP to choose from in the late innings, while the team on offense has 3 PH options. Most of the time, the three PH include a backup C, OF, and a UT player. Hardly a fair battle of managerial strategy. For competitive teams, it will probably be a veteran. For a struggling team, it might be a prospect. In any case, it will give the offense another tool in late innings. Here's an article that contains a handy set of graphs showing changes in age and roster use during the past 100 years.

Article: Ask Seth (Ft. Myers Edition)

Are there any minor league pitchers that have impressed/surprised you? -
I doubt they sign either of them. If they somehow are able to sign Kimbrel, lengthen his prep time. Let him spend a couple of weeks in extended ST in Florida. I'd rather have a fully prepared Kimbrel for 145 games than have him rushed.

The best of the best - 25 man rosters
dbminn commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
Hard to argue with your choices, Mike. I might drop Everyday Eddie and add Tommie Hall to the bullpen. He was probably the best swingman in the lot. Need a reliever to eat innings! Carew leadoff, Mauer 7th, Molitor 9th. -
MacPhail gets my vote. Two WS Championships in five seasons is enough. Almost impossible to sustain winning in a mid-size market. Ryan comes in second for me. An excellent run from 2002-2006. The Twins had a real chance in 2006 until the SP fell apart. Radke tore his labrum and fractured his shoulder. It's amazing he was able to continue pitching. Liriano threw only 6 innings after August 1 and didn't appear in the playoffs. Ryan gets credit for putting the pieces in place. The injury demons ruined his plans. Griffith was an astute judge of talent for his time... and an all-time jerk. The Griffiths milked the team as a family bank, with several members on the payroll. He had a chance to lead the Twins to another WS in the mid to late 70s. Instead of adding a SP, he broke the team apart. I was pissed then and I am now. Mike: I've really enjoyed the series. My one disappointment is you missed the utility players!

Article: Still Free: LHP Dallas Keuchel

I'd rather see the Twins sign Kimbrell if they are going to spend more money. A bullpen with Rogers and May in high leverage situations and Kimbrell as closer would be solid. Maybe I'm biased but I hate watching close games slip away in the late innings. -

Really enjoying all of these articles, Nick. I'm a big fan of Polanco with the bat. I think he's going to be an above average hitter for several years. Compact swing from both sides of the plate. Sneaky power - he could be good for 15+ HR this year. His fielding is another story. What's frustrating to me is his problems are solvable. His arm and quickness seem okay. He just makes mistakes. All, feel free to question my last paragraph, especially the defense. Just what I see from the cheap seats.- 43 replies

Best Relief Pitcher in Twins History
dbminn commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
I really enjoy these posts. My list moves Marshall and Perkins to #4 and #5, respectively. Marshall was only with the Twins a short time but he dominated with an incredible screwball*. He was already 35 years old when he joined the Twins. Won the Cy Young as a RP earlier in his career. * - I didn't remember that his last year with the Twins was a struggle. The first two were lights out. I'd also like to give a shout out to Tommie Hall. I know Mike mentioned him in the SP article but his relief work deserves mention. He was one reason the Twins were successful in 1970-71. An even 100 appearances, including 12 starts, and 6.2 fWAR. He averaged about 10 K/9 at a time when the league average was less than 6. He was really fun to watch!- 7 comments

Article: BREAKING: Twins Flip Granite To Rangers
dbminn replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
KATOH was developed to serve a particular purpose. It was a statistics-only double check on minor leaguers. From the first paragraph of the link: "There are certainly drawbacks to scouting the stat line, but due to their objectivity, the projections can be useful in identifying prospects who might be overlooked or overrated." It was never meant to be a stand-alone assessment of prospects. From his 2018 All-KATOH article, where he identified players with potential outside the top 100: "Of course, the fact that these players missed every top-100 list suggests that their physical tools are probably underwhelming. That’s very important information! Often times, the outlook for players like this is much worse than their minor-league stats would lead you to believe. There’s a reason people in the industry always say 'don’t scout the stat line.'" There is a write-up of Granite in the linked article, explaining why scouts weren't as high on Granite as KATOH. -
Pretty hard to argue with the starting rotation. All excellent in their time. I'd argue young Bert Blyleven was the best SP the Twins ever had - by a nose over Santana. (That would make the L-R split work too ) Dave Goltz was a very good SP from 1975-79. Too bad the Twins couldn't find another couple starters for the rotation. The hitters were excellent from 1975-77. Loved making the trip from Fergus Falls to Met Stadium during those years.

For those in Twitterville, Tom has put up a few "player in focus" videos from ST games. Pineda and Parker were the latest, I believe. Give him a "follow".

"The rebounding-after-injury narrative is a tidy one, but it doesn't always play out that way." I will say that Nick's 2B narrative is a tidy one - period. Well written.- 27 replies

Tony O was incredible. Too bad he had knee problems. Post-surgery, his right knee bent inwards in a way knees aren't supposed to bend.

I agree. IMO, the odds are very good a couple will break out this year, especially compared to the projections. Opinions may differ. Twins have six everyday starters who will be between 25 and 27 years old. Three of them missed a lot of games last season. Looking at their individual past seasons, upside from the projections is not just theoretical. One or two may get hurt/slump but there is quality depth now. On the pitching side, Pineda, Berrios, Rogers and May have room for more wins. If there are no breakouts, the Twins ownership will still make lots of money. I can't find a downside to this deal. PS - I wish they'd signed a very good RP for the money instead, but it didn't happen.

The Best Third Baseman in Minnesota Twins History
dbminn commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
Great series, Mike. Harmon has to be all-time at 3B. Corey Koskie is my #2. Another player brought down by concussions. He's back with a player interview/story website called "Linklete". It's for teens but is fun as an adult too. Gaetti is #3 for me. Always good to see a reference to Ron Coomer. IIRC - Kirby called him, "Sammy Softball". Mike - I sure hope we get a UT player story at the end! -
Berrios is already at the low end of the top-30 SP. Either contract would be a good deal if he never gets any better. SP always have an injury risk. Berrios' high floor and possible upside are worth the risk, especially if the FO can get an option for a second FA year.

Article: TD 2019 Top Minnesota Twins Prospects Recap
dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"When Minnesota's front office talks about biding its time, and waiting to develop further clarity before charting a decisive course, they aren't just talking about the big-league club. We're going to learn a ton about the farm system this summer." I'm looking forward to following Ft Myers this year. The A+ rotation should include five real prospects at some time during the season (probably not all together): Graterol, Enlow, Balazovic, Duran, and Colina. I don't recall the Twins ever having that much pitching at one minor league club. Add in Miranda, Jeffers, Larnach, Helman and Baddoo…that's a pretty good team. Hopefully a few break out. Of course, Pensacola will have the top two prospects, if not top three, at some point. AA is a big step - should be fun. -
Thanks for doing this, mike. Brings back a lot of memories from say, '69 to the present. John Castino was on his way to a fine career with both the bat and the glove. Too bad he couldn't stay healthy.

Article: Report: Twins, Kepler Finalizing Extension
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Jeff Sullivan at Fangraphs has posted a solid article on the reasons the Twins - and other teams - are high on Kepler's future. Here's an extended quote: "It’s easy to grow impatient. It’s easy to have grown impatient with a number of Twins players, for that matter. But... Teams continued to call the Twins, inquiring as to Kepler’s availability. The Twins never formally put him in a trade. Other teams still see a breakout candidate. The Twins still see a breakout candidate. There seems to be something of an industry consensus, and it’s not a tough thing to explain." -

Congratulations to Max! Another good deal for everyone involved. -
Great writeup, mikelink. That's two Matt LeCroy references this week! MLB Network hosts recounted a story about LeCroy on the day Frank Robinson died. It was late in Matt's career and he had two bad knees and an injured elbow. The Nats already had two catchers on the DL and the starter for that day's game showed up injured too. LeCroy started and the opponents stole a bunch of bases. Robinson pulled him in the middle of an inning. Robinson teared up during the press conference because he didn't want to show LeCroy up. When LeCroy heard about it, he said, "My daddy would've done the same thing." Seems it started a friendship between the two. LeCroy is now managing the Nationals AA club in Harrisburg.
