Article: Starter Or Reliever, That Is The Romero Question
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Berrios was up twice in 2016 for 14 starts. In 2017, he began the season in AAA. There is plenty for a young SP to learn in AAA when they are making physical adjustments.- 53 replies

Article: Starter Or Reliever, That Is The Romero Question
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm going to give Wes Johnson the benefit of the doubt on this one. If Romero is ready, as either a RP or SP, he should be on the major league roster. If Johnson tries to improve his mechanics and/or changeup, he might need a little while at AAA to put it together as a SP. Romero could work on these issues with the Twins, but Perez took away a roster spot. If it comes down to Romero or Mejia, they probably keep the latter because he's out of options.- 53 replies

Rooker will be 24 years old for the entire 2019 season. He could be in AAA before he has 1000 professional PA, and in the majors before the end of the year. That's a lot of progress for a 4-year college player. To compare his progress to players that turned pro at 16 or 18 years old is a bit much. He's a bat-first college prospect with a high floor. If he stays a major leaguer beginning in 2020, the Twins will control him until he's 30. That's all of his peak years with the bat. Sounds fine with me. There are only a few comps (college position player) from the back-end of the first round who have had any success in the majors. The best is Aaron Judge, taken with the 32nd pick in 2013, one year younger than Rooker. Here are his stats, by age: 22: A, A+ .308/.419/.486 (2014) 23: AA, AAA .255/.330/.448 24: AAA .270/.366/.489 24: MLB .179/.263/.345 25: MLB .284/.422/.687 (2017) MLB K% - 31.6% I'm not saying Rooker will be as good as Judge. In fact, I'd be happy if he's half as good. The point is - even the great Aaron Judge didn't make it to the majors until he was 25. I'm sure the Yankees are just fine with the situation. The only other successful comps for 2010-2017 are Jackie Bradley Jr and Stephen Piscotty, who had similar career tracks by age.

Article: Andro Cutura On Tommy John, Rehab And Return
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really enjoy these interviews, Seth. I had to look up Cutura's 2018 and see what he was up to. His final month should've built his confidence. Five appearances - four starts and a four-inning relief stint in a game Pineda started. 31 IP/ 25K / 7BB / 0.87 ERA / 0.77 WHIP He's 25 yrs old and not a prime prospect. It's still fun to see the young man overcome his struggles and perform well. I'll be cheering for him in 2019. -
Yes to a clock. Yes to the 26 man roster. Limit pitchers to 13 spots. With the dominance of RP in the modern game, teams need a bat first hitter on the bench. These are the types of hitters that aren't getting contracts or are getting paid very little. For rebuilding teams, the extra spot means room for another prospect. Meh to the universal DH. I'll love the game either way. Yes to Cody's proposal on mound visits. Yes to changes to the payroll system. Higher minimum wages for first three years, FA at 28 or 29 years old or six years in MLB, whichever comes first. Spending floor of some sort? Maybe reduce tax rate on multiple years of high payroll? I have no idea what is the best solution but there needs to be change.

Article: Twins Daily 2019 Top Prospects: 11-15
dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The TD Prospect Book is a favorite winter purchase for me, especially for player rankings below the top 10. These composite lists are the cherry on top. I'm also enjoying the comments in this strand - a lot of good talk. I'll throw in one comment - I'd rank the three SP who were called up last year a little different. I think Stewart has a higher upside than Littell or Gonsalves. I'm probably too optimistic but I think the new coaching staff is going to help him reach his potential. My hot take is that one year from now, Stewart will be the clear choice between these three.- 96 replies

Morris, Stewart and Harper are all good calls. Another good trade happened before the 1969 season, when the Twins traded Jim Merritt for Leo Cardenas. I was 8 years old but I remember the trade because Cardenas became a favorite player. Twins made the playoffs all three seasons he was with the team. Fangraphs shows him at 11.0 WAR total. One of the few good SS the Twins have ever had.
-
Excellent article, Tom. I really like how the comments progress from the young prospects to the ones in AAA. A nice summary of the learning process. A lot of good comments have already been added about Stewart. He will only be 24 yrs old for all of 2019, so there's a chance. That's a big difference from last Winter, at least as far as I view him.

Article: Keys to 2019: Buxton’s Emergence
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Buxton can stay on the field, the Twins are a better team. He doesn't have to be a great hitter in 2019, just make some progress. He has 1,087 career PA, or a little less than 2 years at the plate. Fangraphs has him for 4.6 career fWAR, Baseball Reference at 6.9 bWAR. He's an above-average player already. Buxton's mid-season injuries didn't require surgery. A ball off the toe and a strained wrist. I'm more worried about the migraines. I hope he tells Baldelli as soon as he has symptoms. I can't imagine trying to hit with that kind of pain.- 42 replies

It hasn't been all bad. I like the Cruz deal and Schoop may turn out to be a smart move. They both give the team a better chance of winning in 2019 without trading prospects. What bothers me is the lack of a plan for 2019-2021 for pitching. I'd feel better if they had signed one of the young FA SP. Same for RP - I'm still irritated by the Pressly trade, and now they passed on all of the FA. There's still time. I'd be happy if they made extension offers to Gibson, Rogers and May. They could trade for a young starter or reliever who is under control for several years. I'm not optimistic the FO will act - but I hope I'm wrong. There are a lot of great prospects in the system. I'd rather have them enter the majors with an established core already on the team than wait until 2023 for everything to come together.

Article: Projecting the 2022 Lineup
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You are correct on Rosario - ty. Spotrac was wrong - should've checked Cot's right away. I had used the word "rotating" after DH but deleted it. Didn't want to list all 3 OF again w/Rosario in OF. -
Article: Projecting the 2022 Lineup
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think both Polanco and Rosario will be in their last year of arbitration in 2022. I doubt Austin will hit enough to start long term. Of course, I've been wrong many times before and I hope I am again now. C - Garver 1B - Rooker 2B - Polanco 3B - Lewis SS - Javier OF - Same as Cody's OF DH - Rosario Bench - Rortvedt, Miranda and Baddoo/Severino -
Article: Prospect Spotlight Series: Royce Lewis
dbminn replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lotsa crow hops and not very efficient. All solvable. What an athlete. -
Thanks Nick. You put some work into this series and it's appreciated. If you're looking at the next three years, a player like Graterol may not have top ten impact (other than trade value). The same can be said for Lewis and even Kirilloff in the top 5 - at least until the third year. Maybe you're being optimistic? If so, I hope your prediction is true and these prospects are rocking the big leagues by 2020. I had put together a list. I held off with my responses after 16-20 because I'm probably coming from a different angle. To me, the most important assets are already on the roster. Otherwise, the Twins will be rebuilding to 2022. My top ten: 1. Berrios - SP looks thin with sure bets. 4 yrs control. 2. Buxton - Still a ton of upside and I'm optimistic he'll become an average bat. 3. Polanco - Can hit and will find a spot in the IF for the next 4 yrs. 4. Kepler - Improved BB/K rate last year. He will get better, with 4 yrs control. 5. Kirilloff - I'm optimistic he'll be with the Twins to stay mid-2020. 6. Rosario - 3 yrs control, might not get better (that's ok). Important if Kirilloff needs more time. 7. Romero - Wasn't quite ready last year. Needs to become Berrios' wingman 8. Sano - Who knows? Might be irrelevant, might be top 3. 9. Lewis - Outside chance he's ready in 2020. Twins really need a true SS. 10. Rogers - 4 yrs of a quality RP, which are in short supply right now. I'd put Gibson with Rogers if they extend him.

I wouldn't trade Cave for Gordon because 5 yrs of a good defensive OF who's shown promise at the plate has more value than a MI who might not be ready in 2019. I'd trade Cron for Gordon in a second - even if it's the Twins. Cron was released because there is no room on modern rosters for a 1B/DH that can't hit substantially above average. An injury to Polanco or Schoop and Gordon may end up having value as early as later this year. Maybe not. I'd still rather look for a DH than replace a 23 year-old middle infielder with potential. Who's available? Martinez from the Cardinals or Austin of the Twins. What do you think a replacement MI will cost in the middle of the season? *Also, Lucas Duda and Evan Gattis are available.

The uncertainty with Cave's bat makes him hard to assess. Changed last year to a hitter selling out for power. Unsustainable BABIP, high K-rate. OTOH, he hit the ball really hard last year, he can defend, and there's five more years of control. For me, the big question is - can he reduce Ks and maintain his power? Is it a matter of managing the K-Zone better or does he have too many holes in his swing?

Article: BREAKING: Nelson Cruz Agrees To Deal With Twins

Article: BREAKING: Nelson Cruz Agrees To Deal With Twins
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really like this signing. So much uncertainty in the lineup with Buxton, Sano and Schoop. Cruz adds OBP as well as power. Now, lets see them sign a couple of RP for the back end of the game. -
Finished my list. Here's 16-20: 16 - Javier. So much upside but I know nothing about him except from reports. 17 - Mejia. League average starter with 5 yrs control. Health issues. 18 - Gordon. See above. 19 - Rooker. Potential power but limited in the field. I trade 2 yrs of Cron for 6 of Rooker if I'm building for the future (like the Twins). 20 - Garver/Astudillo. Catchers don't grow on trees. Both have shown they can hit MLB pitching, years of control. Garver has concussion issues. Honorable Mention - Thorpe, Cron, Schoop, Pineda, Duran

This is a fun series, Nick. I'm with others - Gordon ranks higher than Cron for me. Six years of a 23 yr-old, near-ready middle IF is my preference. I can't wait to see the higher ranks. Should make for good debate!

I made my pick of Duran to break out before getting my handbook. Whoa - seems I'm a little late to the party. Looks like others think he's already broken out quite a bit.

Article: Reviewing 2018 Breakout Prospects
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A lot of good choices this year. So many players hitting that sweet spot between A and AA. At SP, I'll take Jhoan Duran. My other choice is Jose Miranda. IMO, he only gave a glimpse of his hitting potential last year. Others on my watch list: Rortvedt and Balazovic. Can I include Tyler Wells, or has he already "broken out"? I think he's going to take another big step this year. -
The Twins FO hasn't made any big moves for a FA. Makes no sense to add a veteran SP to fill the 5th rotation spot. I'd rather they: Try to sign Gibson this offseason. If not, trade him for a young, controllable starter. I hope they sign him now. There's no upside to waiting. Either his trade value goes down (whole season v. half), or the Twins have to pay a premium at the end of the year.Put Mejia on the major league roster if he's healthy and in shape. He has four decent pitches and has been okay in limited use. IMO, his upside is a #3 SP on a winning team.Hopefully, Romero makes the Twins roster. He can piggyback with Odo or Mejia. Have Stewart and Gonsalves as their depth. Thorpe might be ready later in the year.Falvey has said this is a "wait and see" year because of Buxton and Sano. If that's the case, they might as well do the same for the young SP.
