Article: Don't Give Up On These Twins Quite Yet
dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/index.jsp#20100713 It's not likely the Twins make the playoffs but it can happen: The 2009 W% after 62 games was 484. Last year, the low point came later - the 2017 W% after 104 games: .481 (50-54) The bar is a lot higher this year - Boston/NY are going to take one WC spot and the Mariners have a commanding lead for the other. It looks pretty grim. Still, why not see where the Twins are at the All-Star break before giving up? Nothing much will happen on the trade front until then anyway.- 54 replies

Article: LAA 2, MIN 1: Is This a Rerun?
dbminn replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was working around the house and caught only glimpses of the first few innings. I remember seeing 69(?) pitches at the end of the third. I watched from the 5th inning on. Gibson seemed to have adjusted to a good version of his old self, throwing sinkers and pitching to contact. His last nine outs were on ground balls. The in-game change allowed him to be effective through the 7th. I was impressed. Too bad the hitters couldn't find a few runs.- 17 replies

Article: CHW 5, MIN 2: Time is Running Out

Okay, while in the shower, I thought I was unfair criticizing the anti-Molitor crew without offering my opinions for improvement (before firing Molitor): First Choices Bring up Gordon from AAA to play SS. DFA Petit. Rotate Esco, Sano, LoMo through 1B/DH/3B Put Pressley (or Reed) on the DL. Bring up Busenitz. Find a DH upgrade on the trade market. Release LoMo.Other Choices Bring up Wade and sit Kepler for a bit. DFA Grossman. Rotate Wade, Kepler and LaMarre to match up the opposing SP. Work a trade for Realmuto (don't sell the total farm)All of these are on the FO. -

Arizona was 20-8 in April and 8-19 in May. Maybe Tory Lovullo will be available soon. Seriously... I've said my piece about the team's current condition and will now allow the pitchfork train to pass! -

No sentimentality here. What is, IMO, overly emotional is calling to fire a recently successful manager when four position players are on the DL/SSL and one is recovering from off-season surgery and other issues. There are not enough position players to light a fire under at this point. -
Twins should call up Nick Gordon, yesterday
dbminn commented on GoGonzoJournal's blog entry in Minnesota Foul Play-by-play
Yup. Gordon should've been up three weeks ago. I'm not sure he's going to be an improvement but he has a chance to be very good, and that's more than can be said about 3-4 players on the current roster.- 14 comments

They simply don't have the talent on the field right now. By FG, the worst baserunner is Kepler. Adrianza has been miserable on the bases. Maybe they can review the basics with them. Otherwise, they're missing some of their best defenders and/or baserunners: Mauer, Polanco, Buxton and Castro. It hurts to have half the team on the DL in all aspects of the game. It's not on Molitor. Edit: Of course, you are as entitled to your opinion as I am! -

Carole, my comment was definitely not directed at you in particular! I just disagree that Molitor is the core issue. We went through this the first half of last year too. The current Twins lineup has four position players that can hit. Three of them have to have a good week to get the team 4 wins. Dozier had a terrible May, but has been very good the past two weeks. Kepler hasn't hit for the past four weeks (.191/.303/.376). That leaves Rosario and Esco, who have been very good. That's not enough hitting to play better than .500 ball. If the Twins are healthy, they're a good team. If not, they're barely average. The Dodgers suffered injuries and poor starts this year too. They were 9 games under .500 the day Justin Turner returned to the lineup on May 15th. They've been excellent since then, mainly because of Matt Kemp(!), and some call-ups: Max Muncy, Ross Stripling and Walker Buehler. You need players and depth to compete. Roberts hasn't become a better manager the past month. It's easy to pull the pitchforks on the manager but he's not the main problem right now. -

Yeah, Molitor force-fed Sano like a French goose bound for liver pate, dropped a bowling ball on Buxton's toe, spiked Polanco's vitamin drink, and twisted Castro's knee while dancing merengue. Or maybe not. Molitor also signed LoMo and is forcing Gordon to play at AAA. Or maybe not. It might just be that the team they're fielding right now isn't that good. -
I'll be very happy if Larnach progresses as fast as Rooker.

Every Kirilloff highlight I see shows him blasting oppo. I suspect he is the love-child of Joe Mauer and Wonder Woman.

Blankenhorn is having a sneaky decent season at Ft Myers (.260/.313/.458). He's only 21 and has some power in his game. I'm curious to see what happens when he has Kirilloff and Lewis to protect him in the lineup.

Realmuto would not come cheap. He's been a 3.5 WAR catcher the last two years. He's on his way to a 4-5 WAR season. He has 2-1/2 yrs of control. His WAR value is roughly $80M. He'll probably make $15M in arbitration, plus a remaining $2M this year. That leaves a net value of roughly $60-$65M. Great research provided by the Point of Pittsburgh has been used by FG to derive rough values for prospects. Gordon and Gonsalves are worth about $50M. The Twins would have to add a couple more prospects to make a deal. Maybe Rooker/ Rortvedt or Javier/Garver? IMO this is a decent estimate for an All-Star catcher in his prime. That's a lot of good prospects. The trade would also force the Twins to sign either Dozier, Escobar or a FA middle IF next year. As excited as I am to see Gordon, I'd probably make the trade. The Twins SP is in a good window the next few years and Sano/Buxton/Polanco should all be on the field together at some point. JT would be a good fit.

I fully support the bold change to the prospect summary.

Congrats to Littell! SSS, but the Twins have looked at both LaMarre and Cave as OF callups. Now, they've had a chance to see Slegers. Second SP called up is Littell. Seems if a player is on the 40-man and has performed at AAA, they'll give them a taste of the bigs. Good for scouting, good for the player - even if it's only one game.

Adding Sano really changes the look of the lineup. Funny, Cleveland thought it meant they should intentionally walk Rosario a couple of times, so Sano could bat with runners on base. Twins will win a lot more games if that's going to be the opponent's strategy.- 11 replies

Well done.

Thanks for the effort, Tom. A couple of others I've been following are Jose Miranda and Jacob Pearson at Cedar Rapids. Miranda has recovered from a horrible start, hitting .370 since May 17. Pearson has held his own since joining the team on May 23. Can't have too much prospect depth! Also, Alex Kirilloff slipped onto the MLB Top 100 Prospects List yesterday. He made the list due to the graduation of a player from prospect to rookie (McMahon, Rockies).

San Diego could be a good spot for Hughes. There are a couple of pitchers that have come back from TOS but it takes more than a year. They have Tyson Ross, so the Padres understand the injury. They can give him a spot and let him go later if it doesn't work out. From the Twins side, I think $7.5 million for the 74th pick is reasonable. I'd feel different if the club was under past management. This FO convinced the Pohlads to increase payroll this year. They've tried to improve the team. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt on how they invest the funds saved on this one... at least until next year.

Seth, what do you see with Arias? He's definitely picked up his stat line the past few weeks.

Article: End of the Road for Phil Hughes and the Twins
dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree they didn't have to sign him. Extension made the deal 5/$58 M, so it's how you want to figure it. I have no problem saying $14M per year. The contract was reasonable. Hard to get even a 2 WAR SP for $14M at that time. Santana's contract was also pretty speculative. That's the risk GMs have to live with. RE: WAR. I'm not a fan of the curve fitting that goes into bWAR based on team record. Just an opinion. I usually take both fWAR and RA-9 WAR into account when I'm perusing FG. -

dbminn replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Best wishes to Hughes. Yeah, he has a lot of money. But to have a career cut short by injuries is always a bad thing. I don't blame the Twins for extending his contract. He was a 28-year old SP coming off a 6 WAR season. They signed him for less than $12M/yr through age 33. The FO took a reasonable risk for a struggling mid-market team and it didn't work out. Too bad.
