  1. I thought I read that Mauer was offered the roving job after he had decided to leave the Twins (so St Paul could be his home base). Has the real story been made public? Doesn't matter I guess. Just curious.
  2. Sign him for 2-3 years, even though I think he'll cost a bit more than Seth's prediction. I like the Adrianza/Esco utility combo considering the limited space for position players on the bench. Low cost and little risk of getting stuck with a dead contract. If the Twins fade in 2018, he will be in demand at the deadline. He's the type of player needed on the bench of any successful team.
  3. Not worried, just a preference. I've repeated I'd be happy with the trade as-is, but depth is important too
  4. Great - a lousy defender, a utility infielder and two AA players. If Granite is "dime a dozen", I'm sure Pittsburgh wouldn't mind having a different dime a dozen player thrown in. I'd prefer to have a capable defensive OF at AAA in case Buxton is out for more than a week.
  5. Not as well as Granite. And if you move one of the two, you do need a corner OF, which the Twins don't have, so it will cost more to do the deal than if you can find a different prospect to fill the space in the trade. Like I said before, I wouldn't stop the trade if it included Granite but there may be a better alternative. Maybe provide an actual OF you'd get as a FA and serve it beside the sarcasm.
  6. I wouldn't stop the trade because of Granite but I would try to offer a different prospect. Buxton will likely miss some time this season. The Twins don't have another CF who is even close on defense. That means spending more money on the FA market, which increases the cost of the trade.
  7. I've been a supporter of trying to negotiate a deal for Cole (as opposed to trade at any cost). The deal is intriguing. I'm actually a little iffy on including Granite. If the Twins are trying to win next year, he could end up being important. I'd cheer if the Twins made the trade. As nater mentions, Duffy might be available too. He's signed for 4/$59.5. I'd at least call KC and offer a similar package. He has less excess value/yr than Cole so his prospect cost should be in the same ballpark. He'd add more to payroll but 4 years would be nice.
  8. Thanks. Your work is really appreciated.
  9. I agree with Nick - the FO has shown savvy and independent thinking in their acquisitions so far. The real proof comes in the next couple of years. They will have payroll flexibility and organizational depth. I have no doubt that more substantial moves are coming in the next two years. The debate between "win now" and "keep churning to the future" will be answered. They have their own people installed as key mlb coaches - Rowson, Pickler and Alston. They are going to be critical to the progress of the young core. They have restructured the minor league organization. Let's see if they can develop players like St. Louis, Houston and the Yanks. It's going to be interesting.
  10. I am going to enjoy following the minors this year. Solid players at every level (Chattanooga might be a bit short of position players to start the season). Excited to see some of the youngsters move to full-season ball. I'm also interested in some of the 2017 Cedar Rapids prospects: Rortvedt, Blankenhorn, Whitefield and Arraez. All have potential but none have broken out. Kind of a big year for these four - are they going to step up or get passed by?
  11. Some proof would be nice. On the other hand, I can show you many years of teams fluctuating by +/- $10-20M
  12. I hope the Pohlads and the FO don't look at each year's financials as isolated from either the past or the future. Money saved the past few years has been invested somewhere. If the Pohlads believe they can make a better return with the Twins, they will invest it in player contracts. (They have already invested a bit in the FO). IMO, the payroll will depend on who is available through free agency or trade. The Twins might get to $120M+, if the FO believes it is the best investment. It will be less if they can't make the deals. It might also be less if they trade for a player under control, moving assets instead of spending cash. In any case, I suspect they're looking at costs and revenues for the next 3-4 years, not this year alone. For example, what if the Twins sign Cobb? One could argue that they should still sign 2 FA relievers. That would bust the $120M mark but might make sense based on the age of the signed players and any expected revenue increase. Probably won't happen but it is a possibility.
  13. I can't decide about Vargas. I want the Twins to let him go: K rate is way too high. Not a good defender.Clogs up the bases when he does get on. Provides little flexibility from the bench.I want the Twins to play him at least 2/3 of the time: Has a chance to hit 40HRWill probably K less if he plays more often.Doesn't kill the defense. From a FO standpoint, I would keep him through the start of next season and focus FA dollars on pitching. What's best for Vargas? If the Twins aren't going to get him regular ABs, let him go to Japan, get some regular time and make some money. He could come back as the next Marcus Thames. At 27, he deserves a chance somewhere.
  14. Here's the help Hinch got from his FO in 2017: Full seasons of Bregman and Gurriel (1190 v. 350 PA in 2016) in place of Valbuena, Tyler White and AJ ReedReddick and McCann in place of Castro, Gomez, Preston Tucker and RasmusCharlie Morton to replace Doug FisterVerlander for the stretch runHinch did a great job but he had a lot of FO help. Here's what the FO brought for Molitor: Castro and Gimenez for SuzukiBelisle and Breslow for the bullpenEhire AdrianzaOne start from GarciaKinzler and Garcia removed for the stretch runI wouldn't have been upset if Hinch had won. The writers made the right choice. Congratulations Paul Molitor!
  15. Out of the old-school players, Greg Gagne was pretty remarkable. I'm still waiting for a defensive SS anywhere near his ability to arrive.
  16. 2017 might've been Buxton's peak. Maybe he has another decent year, hits a few more walls and his D fades early, like Junior Griffey. Or maybe his career tracks two of my favorite defensive CF, Devon White and Andruw Jones, who had 7-9 years of elite defense. Of the current players, Pillar and Kiermaier are still plenty good defenders at 27-28 years old. I have no idea which way it will go. I'll just enjoy it while it lasts.
  17. Nice article - you put in a lot of thought and effort. As you show, the biggest improvement can come from signing or trading for a quality SP. I lean to the "trade" side (Cole, Stroman). If a deal can't be made for an excellent SP, I'd look at Cobb and/or Chatwood. SP quality and depth are so important. I wouldn't mind a RH for DH, although I'm not totally convinced until we see how Sano recovers from surgery. He may need the DH spot more than expected, especially early in the year. I might wait until the season gets started to do a deal. Still, I think you've made a good argument for getting DH help. And yes... an excellent FA RP please. No filler here.
  18. 1. Generally agree. I think you are $10M light on the Buxton deal. He's the top priority. Sano is lower priority this year but I could see signing any of the core six this offseason if the money is right. 2. Dozier's production will not replaced by Adrianza. There is no guarantee Gordon will come close to Dozier's performance in the next two years. Trading Dozier without getting a MLB-ready pitcher is a step back for 2018 and probably 2019. 3. Minor would be a good get for the bullpen. Nicasio would be okay but not my preference. IMO, your three moves taken together don't move the dial on wins next year.
  19. Did a quick look at Cleveland. They signed three in 2014 and two in two of the next three years: 2014 - Brantley (4 yr/$24M); Kipnis (6/$52M); Gomes (6/$23M + 2 opt/$20M) 2015 - Kluber (5/$37.5M + 2 option yrs/$30.5M); Carrasco (4/$22M + 2 opt/$18.5M) 2017 - Perez (4/$9M + 2 opt/$12.5M); Ramirez (4/$26M + 2 opt/$24M) Data from Spotrac.com Lindor, Salazar and Cody Allen are year-to-year.
  20. Ross on a minor league deal would be okay but not necessary. None of the others.
  21. Purchase completed! Thanks for the work all of you put into this site and the yearbook.
