I'm for Gordon getting the call and using Adrianza for defense late in games. The Twins really miss Polanco's offense. Adrianza is hitting .233/.296/.288. Gordon looks like he could be a league average hitter right now, which would be a huge improvement. The big issue is defense - can Gordon play well enough to be a net plus? Buxton needs to be on the field if he's healthy. The bats have been quiet but team defense has been just as poor by the metrics. I support Wade as the next callup if a starting OF goes on the DL.

Article: Garver Making the Most of the Opportunity
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Garver can be a better than average MLB hitter. With regular PA, his BABP will go down but his K-rate should go lower too. He's hit at every level. His glovework isn't great but he's called some decent games. He definitely has a chance to be an everyday catcher.- 7 replies

Kirilloff is filling up the stat sheet too. Took him a few days to get going after missing a season but he's been excellent since then. In May, he's slashing .375/.423/.750. Yow.

Okay, I'm in. Time for Gordon to make his debut. The Twins need another hitter to extend the lineup. Gordon has almost 700 AA plate appearances. He isn't just hitting singles - he's a SS with a .927 OPS. If he can play defense at all, bring him up. Molitor can always pull him for Adrianze late in the game. The Twins really miss Polanco and it's his own damn fault. Let's not wait until he gets back to get some juice at the position.

Article: Get To Know Miracle Catcher Taylor Grzelakowski
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for article, Seth. Such a good story. It's remarkable he's been able to move to A+ ball with only a season of catching experience. With his demeanor and work ethic, he should be successful wherever life takes him. I wish him well! -
Article: What's Gotten Into Kyle Gibson?
dbminn replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My two cents on Gibson - He was good in 2014 and very good in 2015. He pitched hurt in 2016. It was bad enough he changed his mechanics for the 2017 season. He was also really tentative through July 2017. I believe it was the first game he started in August, right after his one-start demotion to AAA. He wasn't attacking. Molitor visited the mound basically chewed Gibson out. He was solid from that point to year's end. This year, Rowson has him using his FB up in the zone (Allen started it last year but he's more accurate this year). His four-seam FB use has gone from 13.6% in 2016 to 24.8% this year. All of the reduction comes from sinkers and change ups. He's throwing breaking pitches the same amount of the time. The final change is actually trying to put people away with his slurve (stats say he has both a curve and slider). Biggest problem I had with the past regime wasn't "pitch to contact". All teams want SP to be efficient. The problem was not teaching pitchers to have a strikeout pitch available when it's needed. It's always been a good pitch but he never used it as a 2-strike weapon (like Thrylos said, "out of the zone"). I'd say the reasons he's better are: he's healthy, making better use of his fastball and more aggressive. Like someone else said, "he's getting out of his own way". And Sixel, I'm still holding to the 4.25 ERA prediction I made at the end of last year.- 48 replies

Dozier has done what he can to improve over the past five years: mechanics, diet, strike zone management and game planning. His current streak is a culmination of his work. He's been a pleasure to watch.

Twins won. Bullpen pitched great. Brian Dozier showed both power and his elite base running skills (considering his foot speed). Sano had more hits than Ks. Rosario had an adventure (great lede, Tom). I'll take it.

Article: BAL 3, MIN 2: Opening D’oh!
dbminn replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kepler's 9th inning PA was excellent. Down 1-2, he stretches it to 11 pitches and draws the walk. Also, congrats to LaMarre for a good start - a hit and a run. I always like to see the part-timers get a little early success.- 109 replies

Vargas is definitely the odd man out. He still has a chance to be a good DH but I don't think it will be with the Twins. I could see him DH for the White Sox (or maybe the Rays). Otherwise, he should go overseas and get some PA. If Sano isn't with the team to start the season, IMO bench will be: Garver, Grossman, Granite and Adrianza. Granite to AAA when Sano is available. A surprise might be LaMarre instead of Granite to start the season. Let Granite get his ups in AAA to start the year and let the older guy sit on the bench. I predict Hughes starts the season on the DL. He's released in mid-April if his stuff doesn't come back. He's not Falvine's guy. Duffey or Mejia in long relief to start the season. Twins will try and keep Kinley. Easy velo with a nice slider. I think his mechanics are pretty reasonable (based on a whole two innings of TV). Either he clears waivers and they make a trade with Miami or Pressly could be out. This is my "hot take" impact. IMO, Pressly is a little like Vargas - a lot of talent but maybe no room.

Great value signing. It's like Falvine went to the mall and found everything at clearance prices. They can't stop filling the cart. -
Article: Report From The Fort: A Market Squeezed
dbminn replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The 1955-1960 Kansas City Athletics did a fine job of tanking and taking profits back when they were called the "farm club" for the New York Yankees. (Here's an article that describes the trades). Bigger picture, the "market" was more than willing to conscript players to a team, without free agency. Better that small market teams stink and squeeze player salaries than compete. Free agency finally arrived through the courts (government). Profits and competitiveness have been a lot better since then. -
Article: What's Next For Kennys Vargas?
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Vargas seems to be the odd man out as long as nobody gets hurt. He still has a chance to be good if he can get some AB. The best bet for Kennys is probably Korea. Maybe he will get signed by the White Sox. They have room at DH. He'd be a big upgrade over Matt Davidson.- 65 replies

Article: Report From The Fort: Mound Visits
dbminn replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hopefully, the umpire will call an injury timeout on foul tips. Let the catcher and pitcher meet halfway with the ump in tow. He can listen to the conversation. Important to get this issue resolved before opening day. Happy to hear Hughes was throwing with better velo. One step at a time. -

Article: Gameday: Twins Versus Gophers (Exhibition)
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
More confirmation that I'm getting old - I went to a lot of Gopher games to watch Dan Wilson and crew. The teams at the end of the 80s and early 90s were really fun to watch. A lot of players had at least a cup of coffee in the majors: JT Bruett (CF), Brent Gates (SS), Brian Raabe (2B), Wilson © and Denny Neagle (SP). Now their children are playing... sheesh!- 28 replies

Article: Top 15 Minnesota Twins Players
dbminn replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for the article, Seth. A couple of thoughts re: your top 15 - Hrbek is a bit too high. I'd put him after Blyleven and Santana. Maybe Puckett ahead of Carew. I'd like to mention a couple others to remember: Camilo Pascual - mikelink put together a fine testimonial. Only one that I would say is a "miss" from the top 15. I'd put him ahead of Hunter.Greg Gagne - More than 100 runs of defensive value between 1987-1982 (fangraphs). Only Ozzie, Guillen and Ripken were ranked higher in that period. Not a great hitter but he was the defensive glue for two world series winners. Twins have been searching for a SS ever since.- 30 replies
