Ranking the Top-5 Draft Picks in Twins History
strumdatjag replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In 1997, The Twins record was 73-89. Brad Radke’s record for that team was 20-10. I know many of you don’t care about win-loss records. But for the rest of us, Radke’s performance was amazing that year.- 11 replies

2021 IBWAA Hall of Fame Ballot
strumdatjag commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Some of the dislike for Schilling is based on his conservative politics. Gary Sheffield had a bad attitude, but that isn’t noted. -
Martin, Lewis, and Arraez are characterized here as players without a position. Another perspective is to look at them as players who can play many positions (SS, 2B, 3B, 1B and all three outfield spots). On top of that, I remember one commentator said the ceiling for Royce Lewis (as a draftee) was becoming another Derek Jeter (defense, offense and high character team leader). In other words, I wouldn’t trade Martin and Lewis for “My Friend Irma” at this time. OK, maybe Martin. Arraez clearly has trade value and could bring something in a trade.

My take: Back in the days of the AWA, a wrestler couldn’t have a nickname of a previous or current AWA wrestler. So, when Bruiser Brody came to the AWA, he somehow had to have a different nickname because of long departed AWA wrestler Dick the Bruiser. So, He became known as King Kong Brody. This became problematic for the AWA when they signed King Kong Bundy. So, Bundy assumed the moniker Boom Boom Bundy. I hope my take properly shows my low level of interest in this acquisition. Give me credit for NOT reminiscing about another more famous Bundy, and not using him as a metaphor.

I’m thankful that the Twins and MLB brought back live baseball to ballparks around North America, and I’m glad the Twins did NOT bring back the stupid, annoying Dance-off.

Has anyone considered that Buxton may want to prove himself in 2022 in order to get a better contract in FA after the season? Not a slight on the Twins, but consider what logically could be “reality.” I suspect that Byron likely views himself as a victim of freak injuries (2021’s wrist injury) and “running into walls” injuries that he believes he is now able to avoid as a smarter, seasoned, veteran player. However, the Twins can’t afford to let him “play it out” (and join next year’s off-season bidding war). The Twins are more likely to get a good return this offseason than mid season 2022. If they are contending in midseason 2022, the option to trade Buxton is off the table completely. Now is the the time to make an effort to sign him, but upon being rejected - TRADE BUCk. That may be REbuilding; it may be REtooling: but it is likely to be REality.

Lessons From Atlanta: If You Have A Shot, Take It
strumdatjag replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don’t go with blowing up the future to push a long shot bid for a wild card. I’m glad Atlanta is succeeding against the cheaters. But it ain’t a blueprint.- 49 replies

For those of us looking for a team to favor simply as fans - I suggest we are relegated to Atlanta. I agree that the “Chop” is annoying, but consider the alternatives The “big city” Dodgers are trying to spend their way to a Championship, and Houston is still stained by the trashcan cheating scandal. Boston is a Northeast Team, with its long overhyped “rivalry” with the Yankees - those of us in flyover country shouldn’t go for that!!’ That leaves the Braves by default. Finally, it would be nice to see the Commish, the “Manfred Man” (with no Earth Band”), forced to give Atlanta the biggest spotlight in baseball. THEY can’t move the World Series a mile higher!!!! So - Go Braves (but still wish the Brewers could have held on). Prediction: The Dodgers and Houston will win just as you said (except Houston does it in 5 too).

Twins Daily 2021 Awards: Most Valuable Player
strumdatjag replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This was a no-brainer. Hopefully, the Twins will write in Polanco at 2B with a Sharpie. No need to mess with success. Only Buxton gets the Sharpie treatment. All other position players are in pencil (for durability reasons, even Josh Donaldson might DH and share 3B duties with Arraez).- 5 replies

So give me a scientific explanation. With my antibodies recently tested off the chart (>10), explain how having the virus neutralized in my bloodstream makes me an equal danger to someone who is unvaccinated and has cells become Covid factories producing more viruses at a high rate and causing sneezing to spread the virus further into the air. There is no coherent scientific explanation.

Funny. Now try to get a vaccine for Kirk Cousins - before he becomes the Vikings super-spreader that some of us believed Andrelton to be (despite lame denials by the Twins brass) But then again, some skepticism of the “conventional wisdom” is often wise. Remember that allegedly “debunked” Covid origin “conspiracy theory” of the Wuhan Institute of Virology leak? In the last few months, it’s been generally UN-debunked and is seriously being considered as an explanation (check out Jon Stewart’s cogent and funny comments on this on Colbert’s Show). More important (possibly!) - Remember, when we all thought signing Max Kepler longterm was a great move?

The numbers you list for Rodriguez don’t look that great. Unless I’m reading it wrong - he batted .214. Yes with 10 HRs, and apparently some BBs. But tell me why to ignore .214???

Max-imizing Kepler's Value
strumdatjag replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Half of the left-handed hitters in baseball should learn to get bunt singles to the third base side. They either can’t do it or won’t do it. That’s a shame. Hits that beat these annoying, ubiquitous shifts are my favorite plays in baseball in this shift-happy era -
3 Twins Players Set to Bounce Back in 2022
strumdatjag replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’d put Sano ahead of Kepler. But number one should be Byron Buxton who will play in more than 140 games at a high level. That would be the biggest bounce back.- 35 replies

I’m not saying that is an indication every year. However, after trading Berrios and with Maeda out for most if not all of next year, the Twins are unlikely to be a serious contender without signing a number one starter. Otherwise, they are looking to 2023 - and that might be the best course anyway.
-
If the Twins sign Pineda, that’s an indication that they are building for 2023. Pineda would be a one year placeholder for someone else. If the Twins sign a number one starter, that is a sign that they plan to contend.

Twins Worst Free Agent Signing Ever?
strumdatjag replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Some of the players that have been listed were obtained by trade. I think an international signing like Nishioka shouldn’t count either. Ricky No-Fastball was given a four year contract and stunk for the two years he played with the Twins. So - he is indeed the biggest loser of all. Colome may have been overall a bad signing but his recent good performances will lead the Twins to pick up his option next year.- 66 replies

Ranking the Top 5 Least Valuable Twins in 2021
strumdatjag replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Andrelton Simmons certainly deserves to be number one. Remember, he was the guy who publicly refused to get a Covid vaccine, then he got COVID. Then a few other Twins players got it too. Of course, the Twins stuck up for Simmons and claimed he didn’t spread it. Who knows - but with that attitude I’d like Simmons to viewed as a bigger Super Spreader than Sturgis, Lalapalooza, that big Martha’s Vineyard birthday party and all of last weekend’s college football games combined.- 35 replies

Which Prospect Anchors 2022's Rotation?
strumdatjag commented on bean5302's blog entry in Shallow Thoughts - bean5302
An anchor can drag everyone else down into the deep. -
I would certainly like the Twins to sign one Top Starter as a free agent and otherwise go with a youth movement and Dobnak to fill the rotation. The problem: any top starter is likely to want to play for a contending team and is likely NOT to see the Twins as such a team. So, practically the Twins will be relegated to bottom feeding and aging (probably fully aged) veterans and hoping they get a SP who can bounce back or have a career year. They should not overpay for a legit number one in the rotation at this time.
