  1. Here's the mlbtraderumors write up on him - https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/01/oscar-colas-to-seek-mlb-deal.html Seems to be less agreement that he can be a two way player than Ohtani. Also, we've seen a number of high profile Cuban contracts utterly blow up on the teams that signed them. Rusney Castillo was given 72m by the Red Sox in 2014. Yasmany Tomas was given 68m+ by the Dbacks in 2014 as well. Hector Olivera got 62m in 2015 from the Dodgers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_baseball_players_who_defected_from_Cuba That's not to say I don't want us to sign him, I want our scouts to do their due diligence and, if they think he'll help, sign him. The Twins get a little more than most teams (but not all teams) in their international pool although what they don't spend they can't carryover. This year they had nearly 6m to spend and looks like they've spend about 3.5 (Emmanuel Rodriguez being the big fish this year). It doesn't seem like an international draft will happen by July 2020 so the Twins are likely to have a big chunk of cash available again.
  2. I can't find any NFL draft info on him. Anyone know what round he is supposed to go in?
  3. My guess is that last year was Kepler's career year but he probably has a few more 3-4 WAR type seasons. But I don't think he gets much better but he probably plateaus. A corner OF with a Cuddyer type profile but better defense is a darn good player.
  4. True but keeping that offense in check, even if they started getting some thing going with Hill late, was really impressive. I thought we might win a shoot-out but we kept them out of the endzone pretty well. The defense really stood up. I know nothing about the 49ers but hopefully we beat them, too.
  5. I partially disagree. Zimmer really had the defense ready today. I was shocked. He did good there. I wasn't thrilled with some of our conservative play calling but not sure how much of that is on Zimmer or our OC. But it's a heck of a win. Good for us.
  6. Another PR piece from TD? How many do you have? I really hope you're getting some kick back from the Twins. Maybe that's where the payroll is going. Anyhow, the linked article about the trade "wins" is ridiculous and the new FO has made one good trade in three + years (Odorizzi) and one good FA signing (Cruz) if you define "good" as averaging at least 2 WAR/season. If you just want one simple 2 WAR season, you could add Castro to the list. The Twins had a massive build up of talent before this new FO got here and so far they have failed to augment that talent.
  7. I'm really not surprised at all by this offseason. The Pohlads are the problem. We've had some pretty smart GMs over the years. It's not them. Ownership puts severe limits on this team yearly. Dumpster diving, one year contracts, relying on prospects is going to continue. We need better prospects - Randy Dobnak should not be starting a playoff game.
  8. This seems like a bad draw for us. I could see the Saints blowing us out fairly early. But if the offense can get into gear and we stop a few TDs and give up FGs instead ... We have a chance but the coaching staff is going to have to throw in a few wrinkles, go for it a bit more on fourth and short and call a strong game. The Saints defense can give up a bunch of points. 48 to the 49ers, 31 to Panthers, 28 to Tennessee, all since Thanksgiving. Let's be optimistic. Vikings 35 Saints 23.
  9. Folks like me that have Disney credit cards (don't ask, it's too embarrassing), Disney park annual pass holders and a few other Disney related offers were out there besides the Verizon one. We got two years for something like $4/month.
  10. He's the only young arm that I think fans should realistically be excited about. He can be a legit ML starter. Probably not an all-star but he should have a solid career.
  11. Disney+ has a real problem with it's limited content. It's great and affordable for families with young kids but if it wants to compete with Netflix or Amazon it needs to start adding a lot more original content. But they will be doing that. Apparently they have a few Marvel universe shows in development coming and some other things. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_original_programs_distributed_by_Disney%2B I'm not sure this is enough - I would imagine Disney will probably buy out some other small media groups for their original content (they could buy Crown Media and own the Hallmark channel). And they also have a ton of R-rated movies from the Disney vault and Fox movies that they'll probably eventually add to Disney+ in some way. But they pushed a lot of people into getting a one year deal off the bat so they have time to integrate more programming. I think they'll be fine in the long run.
  12. That was a really fun game to watch. I thought Auburn was going to bury us and I didn't think we'd have any chance of scoring 30+ points. Really good win for the program. I'm not sure how the rest of the top 20 played out but it seems like the Gophers should finish the season in the top 15 and should push Wisconsin next year.
  13. Best of luck to him.
  14. The most confident I've ever been going into a season was 2011. We had just come off a 94 win season and we had knocked the White Sox out (they were 12 games back with 10 to play) and we'd have a healthy Morneau and Mauer coming back. Delmon Young, at 24, finally put it all together and we could reasonably expect him to take another step forward. Liriano had finally gotten over his surgery and became the ace we expected. Valencia stepped up and was manning third base efficiently and a solid bat in the bottom half of the order. None of our core players had a "career season" (or so we thought). We might have won 101 games last year but I don't think last year's Twins were as good as the 2006 or 2010 Twins. There is a lot of regression on this team and currently our pitching staff is pretty wobbly. It's too early to panic but I think the idea that the Sox, Twins and Cleveland are all pretty close and anyone could win the central is probably accurate. Now we can change that between now and opening day. And certain things could break right and make the season a laugher (mainly a fully healthy and productive season from Buxton) but right now, it's closer than some of us want to admit.
  15. The o-line was destroyed tonight. Cousins had a bad game but he had no time at all and the play calling was iffy at best. Both this and the Seattle monday night game it seemed like we were ok at halftime and then the other team was a lot better in the second half. Our opening drive of the second half (three and out) was really demoralizing.
  16. This game is brutal. I hate the play calling. Taking a time out on fourth and 1 and then punting? Gads. Credit the defense for keeping us in this but we are not a good team tonight.
  17. I said at the outset that I thought the Twins would follow the Rays bullpen rotation path and that looks like what they are doing. They've made some good additions to the pen in Romo and Clippard. I think they might make one or two more additions like them. They won't sign Donaldson but they might sign either a defensive first MIer to move our infield around a bit (Sano at first, Polanco to second, FA at short and Arreaz at third) or sign a stop gap first baseman until one of our young prospects is ready to come up. We're obviously not at the level of the Yankees or Astros and a few bad breaks could have the Sox catch up with us but we should still be favored to win 90 games and get into the playoffs without jeopardizing the future with bad contracts or trading away impact prospects. Essentially, this FO is following the Ryan model. We'll see if they can do it as well.
  18. I think this might be a realistic option for the Twins although I think he might cost a bit more since he'll be available opening day but certainly his cost won't be too much for the Twins.
  19. I was obviously higher on Keuchel than others - I think he'd comfortably be our second best pitcher and, like Berrios, give us close to 200 innings. I don't think there is another pitcher out there with both the stuff and work horse ability left out there. Nova could give us those innings but he's a solid #5 type. Ryu is a stud but I don't think he'll pitch more than 150 innings going forward. I honestly don't know where the Twins will spend the money they might have left anymore. They can probably bring in more bullpen arms and some 4/5 for the rotation if they wanted. I don't imagine they'll sign Donaldson or Ryu. At this point, I'm not even sure they should spend much more in FA, payroll concerns be damned.
  20. Who is trading ace pitching?
  21. My guess is that he'll be at third base to open the season. We won't sign Donaldson. There are some vets that the Twins could take a flyer on to hold down first base for a few months until someone like Rooker, Larnich or Kiriloff are ready to come up. I could also see the Twins getting a MIer and moving Arreaz to third and Sano to first - I don't think that will happen but I wouldn't be shocked if it did.
  22. Maybe he thought he was signing with an up and coming team with solid young prospects, good nucleus and ownership who is willing to pay money to support them, even if the window isn't wide open yet.
  23. Solid moves for Detroit. Both are still good players and could turn into assets at the deadline.
  24. Solid move and I expect a few more like this. I think we're going to load up on solid bullpen arms that can throw 65-70 innings and sort of give a bullpen day to the rotation. If the Twins can't compete and get the top starters, maybe they follow the Rays method and acquire a quantity of rubber arms.
  25. Murphy is not a good player anymore and failed to hit at Coors field. He played mostly first base and wasn't great there last year. His inclusion would be to save money for the Rockies. Assuming the Twins buy him out next season, would still cost the Twins 14m (8m this season and 6m next). Gray is Arb 2 so we'd have him for two years. He'd likely cost 5.5m this season. So the trade would raise payroll 13.5 this season and probably 16 next? (guessing 10m in A3? that might be way off). I think this would be a great trade for the Twins but the Rockies could still probably get a better offer than Thorpe, Sands and Moran.
