Braves (Fried) vs Twins (Ober): 8/26/24, 6:40pm
USAFChief replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Another tough series. This is still a talented Atlanta team. -
Could have had Hector Neris for the pro-rated MLB minimum. Houston pounced. I think with the evidence at hand, outside additions are unlikely. Forget Tonkin, they're not going to spend the $200k or whatever it would cost. I'd make the move with Varland. That's really the only realistic possibility.

The infielders play where the bench tells them. They're not positioning themselves. The Twins shift their IF on most hitters, most of the time.

If they're throwing fewer pitches and getting hurt more, I'd consider the possibility I'm doing it wrong. At the very least, if I want my starters to be capable of going 100+ pitches per start, and more than 5 innings per start, I'd train and condition them to that standard. That way, I don't ask Mathews to come into a pennant chase and force him to do things he's never done before. Or shut him down. And need 4 innings minimum from the pen every time 40 percent of the rotation starts.

I'd say there's no difference to the rash of injuries occurring now. There might end up being less. Teams used to ask more, and GET more, routinely. And at least the ones that get through, or recover, are prepared to pitch.

AJ Puk. Any of the four RHers you mentioned. Kopech in particular was an obvious target. He's now throwing 100 MPH aspirin tablets for the Dodgers. Effing do SOMEthing. Other teams made improvements. The pearl clutching over "prospects" is nauseating. I read every year how expensive the trades were, yet there are the same teams, year after year, winning. Do you think the Astros really care about the prospects they trade away as they reach yet another postseason?

Farmer was never going to see a LH pitcher. And he didn't. The options were Wallner against a LH reliever or Farmer against a new RH reliever. Or Vazquez, which seems like a better option, but managers are terrified of using their backup catcher. Farmer vs RH pitching 2024: .148/.245/.235

Sorry, nonconcur. How can Mathews be "ready to throw 100 pitches" when he's never done it? Not once, minors or majors. And Festa? Festa has 8 starts. Max pitches? 82. He has thrown less than 80 in 5 of the 8 starts. He hasn't gone more than 5 innings in any of the 8 starts. He had a 2 hit shutout, with 9 K's against the Cubs...and went 5 innings. Even Woods-Richardson has thrown 100 pitches ONCE this entire season. Once.

Prior to the new three hitter minimum (2020), a relief pitcher had to complete one PA, or record one out, whichever came first, before he could be replaced. The manager on offense always has had the last substitution opportunity. The manager on defense waits until the pinch hitter has been announced, because the player isn't officially in the game until then.

That's incorrect. https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Pinch_hitter#:~:text=A pinch hitter may be,used again in the game. In this specific instance, they said Kepler was out of the starting lineup for injury reasons, so I don't know if he was available or not to pinch pinch hit for Farmer. But it wouldn't have been against the rules. You can pinch hit for a pinch hitter.

Interesting. Julien has outhit Farmer by almost 100 points of OPS this year. Higher batting average, higher OBP, higher SLG. You can't click your heels and make that go away either.

On September 1 the roster goes to 28. Who’s getting added?
USAFChief replied to thelanges5's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
They are? Lee will likely be activated Monday. Who knows on Buxton and it doesn't sound like Correa is anywhere close. -
Every single one of those players was available opening day. And Farmer was on the roster. I expect Lee to be activated Monday. We'll see who is gone.

If Tonkin claimed would he be playoff eligible?
USAFChief replied to jaimedude's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Well they could also just add him to the 40 man prior to Sep 1. -
Except for an IL stint, Farmer has been on the 26 man roster all season. He's not just filling in for injuries. At least not so far. They paid him $6M.

Week in Review: Sliding Amid Setbacks and Sloppiness
USAFChief replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The pen is critically short of good options, concur. So maybe don't run Jax out there Saturday up 5-0 in the 8th, and Duran up 6-0 in the 9th. Just a thought, Rocco.- 15 replies

He pitched well. Really well. But of course the most pitches he's thrown in a game in his professional career is 92. So he's out of the game after five, and you need 4 IP from the pen, minimum, every time he pitches. Same for Festa. They don't throw innings in the minors either (105 across all of 2023, for example) so here we sit worried about innings in August. For most of our starters. I will never understand why they choose to not prepare their pitchers for the big leagues.

USAFChief replied to jaimedude's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Players on the 40 man roster on Aug 31 are postseason eligible. Plus adds for injury. -
That decision also prevented using Farmer for the single, solitary, lonely reason that makes any sense: now he's not available as a late game defense replacement for Julien. Worse, he's at SS--which they've steasfastly avoided all season if possible--and Castro's in the OF and you're worse defensively at 2 additional positions. Which ignores the question of why use both Jax and Duran yesterday. Not to mention: Why pitch to LH hitting regular Nootbar with 2 outs, 2 on and 1st base open, RH hitting backup catcher due up and the other catcher likely not available. So slim chance of PH.

Cards (Fedde) v Twins (Zebby) @ 1:10pm CT, 8/25
USAFChief replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
I count way more than 2 misplays by Rocco having a hand in today's debacle.
