    This is also not a typical business. It is professional sports where teams are owned by billionaires (except the Packers), the land of monopoly money, and the driving forces are greedy and ego. The Twins' payroll should be driven by what it takes to win the World Series. There will be a TV contract before the season starts (or shortly thereafter) and using TV as an excuse to not improve the team is disingenuous.

    After reading this several times, I still can't figure out what you meant to say about "just maintaining the talent level instead of improving it." At first, I thought you meant that signing Lee wouldn't improve the Twins and I was going to ask if adding Lee in place of Gallo would only maintain the current talent level? But several readings later I wondered if your comment was in reference to the budget cutting. If it's the latter, then I agree. If it's the former, I would say that Lee might be a significant upgrade over Gallo.

    You have Yamamoto on the "too hot" list at a $20M AAV during his 25 to 35 year old seasons. And you have Rodriguez on the "just right" list at a $20M AAV during his 31 to 36 year old seasons. Personally, if Maki thinks Yamamoto is the real deal, they should try to grab him. As I pointed out in another article, the Twins have $42M of salaries coming off the books because of free agents and another $20.5M available by trading Polanco and Kepler (and $10M more if they could find any team that would take Vasquez). That gives the Twins plenty of room to land Yamamoto.

    Other than Rosario and maybe Cosetti, I don't think any of these "prospects" are in the Twins' long-term plans.

    At the end of the season, the Twins had 10 free agents (according to Sportac) with salaries totalling about $42M. I plus they have two options players worth $20.5M available for trade (replaceable with Julien and Austin Martin). That leaves the Twins with over $62M of available salary money - assuming the budget stays the same. I think the Twins can afford Yoshinobu Yamamoto (if Maki likes him) and a very good RH outfielder.

    "Perfect Match"? Not by a long shot. But on a low-cost one-year deal, I say go for it.

    Interesting article. An in depth analysis of three top tier LH pitchers; all of whom the Twins will never sign (according to you). And I agree. Which leads me to ask: why write this article? Perhaps a better article would be: Which Starting Pitcher Should The Twins Target In A Trade? I invision the gist of the article to be a look at what non-contending teams are willing to trade a very solid starting pitcher (with some control) in return for 2-3 AAA players ready to hit the big leagues (i.e. Severino, Martin, Helman, Bechtold, Enlow, Sands, Winder, Prato, SWR, to name some possibilities). And before anyone suggests it, I'm too lazy.

    The original statement was that the "Twins" have a history of turning starters into relievers and was not restricted this specific front office.

    I don't want to get into a lengthy debate over which player (Lee or Lewis) is better at which position (2B or 3B). It doesn't really matter. I'll let the Twins' decide that. But if the premise of one of them being the 2024 2B, I think it's time to trade Polanco. Martin, Julien, and Severino all can provide backup to whomever is the starter and Polanco (along with someone in the 2B pipeline) could become trade assets for either a starting pitcher or a solid, RH corner outfielder. Either Martin or Lewis could backup Buxton (or be the regular CF). Below is a 25-man roster for 2024 that I would like to see. It is NOT an A) "unquestionably best" lineup, or B) an "I'll give up on Twins if they don't do this" lineup, or C) or any other commonly used declarative sentence attempting to transform an opinion into a fact. It's just me daydreaming. C Jeffers C Camargo 1B Kirilloff 2B Julien SS Correa 3B Lee LF New brought in by trading Polanco CF Lewis RF Kepler DH Buxton Bench Wallner Castro Severino Larnach SP1 Lopez SP2 Paddock SP3 Ryan SP4 Ober SP5 Gray/Maeda/someone via free agency or trade RP Duran RP Jax RP Stewart RP Varland RP Alcala RP Funderburk RP Canterino That's a payroll of about $90M plus whatever is spent for a new LF and SP5. And it leaves about $60M for the new LF or SP5. Should be able to buy or trade for decent players and have plenty left over for extensions for young guys.

    No upside??? He has great Stuff+!! That must mean something. I love magical advanced metrics that can turn a mediocre actual pitcher into a theoretical All Star.

    If Gray does leave, I would like to see the Twins offer Maeda a $2/$25 deal and also offer Mahle a deal similar to the Michael Pineda deal (we'll give you a couple million to do rehab in 2024 and then give you $15M in 2025 with a buyout if your recovery is not complete). The Twins' rotation would include Lopez, Paddock, Ryan, Varland, Maeda, and Ober in 2024. And Mahle might be available in 2025.

    I know that question is a generalization but there are a significant number of Minnesota natives living all over the country (and world) who might like to watch the Vikings, Twins, or Wild. (I'm not a basketball fan.) I left in 1982 and only get back occasionally. Over the years, I subscribed to "single team" packages for the Twins and Wild at a reasonable price. But those options are no longer available. I would be happy to pay a subscription fee for the Twins, Wild, and Vikings if I could be assured that all games would be available. I almost signed up for the Center Ice NHL package (even though I don't really want to watch the Oilers play the Canucks) but all three Wild games that were scheduled during a free trial they offered were not included in the "up to 40 games a week" they advertise. I'm not paying for games I can't watch.

    The guaranteed contracts go up $23M in 2025. But they also go down by $25M in 2026. In essence, the Twins would only be taking a one-year hit on the existing contracts. Hopefully, that won't deter them from thinking long term.

    If the bases were really 18 square feet (as the article says), I think I could steal bases. 18 square feet is roughly 51 inches by 51 inches. The bases are actually 18 inches by 18 inches.

    A 100% method of winning games is by scoring at least one more run than your opponent scores. And the "unquestionably" best way to do that is to use any and all tools you have available. A reliance on one method does not always work. Just ask the current Phillies team or the 2019 Twins or the 2023 Twins.

    I don't believe any way is "unquestionably" the best way to win playoff games. Some are won with home runs. Some are won with pitching masterpieces. Some are won with a clutch single, or hit and run, or maybe a stolen base. The best way usually depends on the makeup of the team. And by attempting to force a win by using a skill set (such as hitting home runs) that you might not possess is "unquestionably" the least likely way to win a playoff game.

    I would like to see the Twins sign two bounce back candidates (Severino, Giolito, etc) to "prove it" deals and also make a trade with a rebuilding team of two or three young position players for a young-ish starting pitcher whom Pete Maki believes is on the verge of big things. I haven't got any names in mind right now but maybe when I'm recovering from knee replacement surgery, I can do some research.
