Article: Game Thread: Twins @ Mariners, 5/27 @ 9:10pm CT

Well done! Can anyone think of a similar scenario where your wife wouldn’t blame it all on you? Nope. Always wondered about that part of the song. She puts in a personal ad...his fault of course for driving the relationship to that point. He answers the personal ad...how could he be so insensitive? I'm surprised that there isn't another version of the song where instead of laughing, she just kicks the sheboygan right outta him. -
Article: Sell, Sell, Sell: A Look At Twins Trade Chips
gocgo replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Neil Allen suspended for a DWI. Add that to the long list of things that have gone off track this season. Trade chips? Well, when the guy across the table knows exactly what cards you're holding, it's tough to win the hand. The reality is that everyone in MLB knows that Plouffe is blocking Sano and that Sano in RF is not an option for the future. So, if you were an opposing GM who really needed a 3B, what would you offer for Plouffe? If you're smart, not much. What we need is a really dumb GM...where is Kenny Williams when you need him?- 82 replies

Totallly in agreement. Unfortunately, people in power don't often see it this way.

It's interesting to read others talk about trading chips that the Twins have. We all have an inflated sense of value when it comes to our favorite team, but here's a reality check. As someone pointed out, Tommy Milone passed thru waivers a few weeks ago. If teams don't want him for free, why would they give up anything for him? Trade value = zero. Trevor Plouffe was available for trade this offseason, but we didn't get any credible offers. Already spending 15 days on the DL and having decent but not eyepopping numbers, what has he done to increase his trade value? Not much. Trade value = very little. Brian Dozier? Not many teams in the market for a sub .200 pull hitter. Joe Mauer...uhm yeah...don't need to go there. Even without the contract, the market for first basemen who don't hit for power doesn't exist. I could keep going, but what all this adds up to is a GM painted into a corner. If you cut those players lose, it is admitting failure...not going to happen. If he continues to keep those players on the payroll, it blocks the future. I just don't see a way out of this one.

Article: Your Turn: What Do You Want From A GM?
gocgo replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A couple of things to consider. First, let's not assume that an experience GM wants the job. We may only have first time candidates to chose from. Second, when it comes to signing free agent pitchers, the numbers don't lie and the numbers for 30+ pitchers aren't pretty in terms of them staying healthy or improving. So, I would avoid signing pitchers to long term deals when those deals are taking them beyond the wall known as 30 years old. That wall has been defied by only a few and a couple of those few were known PED users. I think one area where TR has failed is hiring pitchers and hoping they defy the odds.- 165 replies

Article: The More Things Change, The More Things Change
gocgo replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just throwing poop at the wall and hoping it sticks. That's pretty much been the approach as far as I can see. Never mind actually trying to coach and improve players. Just put them on the field and if they screw up, send them back down and repeat the process.- 55 replies

Well, I think what you said actually supports what Seth is saying. Send the young guys down now. Get them everyday playing time while doing the same for the vets to hopefully build trade value. After the trade deadline, call them up and play them.

Hey, at this point, a plan...any plan...is better than floundering around taking shots on these guys. I like it.

"I know nothing!"....and my wife reminds me every day. -
The fact of the matter is that the Twins have painted themselves into a corner by hiring, rehiring, and shoehorning the same people over and over. Would Bill Smith have been given a position in any other organization? Probably not. Was Ron Gardenhire swooped up by another organization in the year that he sat on his couch? Nope...but the Twins found spots for both of them in the organization. If you were a candidate for the GM position, is this a situation that you would want to step into? Think about it for a second. An existing GM isn't going to want to come to the Twins. First time GM's are the only candidates that are going to consider the position. Now consider that you are basically stepping into a family owned, family run, good old boy club business. And you think you're going to clean house? Not going to happen.

I'm thinking baseball might be more interesting if the team at the bottom of the division by 10+ games is granted a waiver on PED testing. I mean why waste the money? If you are 10+ games out and you're already doing PEDS, you really, really suck and you should get a waiver on testing anyway. On the other hand, if your 10+ games out and you just suck, maybe some PEDS will kick start the season and make it more interesting. I know, with insightful thinking like that, you're probably thinking I should be the commish and I couldn't agree more.

Oh come on now. We wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by dropping them too far in the order...well, maybe just Santana, but that's all the feelings we want to hurt. Too many hurt feelings just brings the whole team down and we can't have that or we'll start losing...oh wait...already losing...well, we can't have it because we might lose by more.

Article: Twins Being Overwhelmed By Underperformance
gocgo replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
OK, so....we suck....I've come to terms with that by convincing myself that I was waaaay to busy to watch the Twins anyway this summer. Besides, I can watch my 12 year old and his buddies play bad baseball for free! No need to spend money to go to Target Field. We are an astounding 13.5 games back only 5 weeks into the season. Wow! I don't think in my wildest dreams I could fathom being that bad. In years past, I could at least rely on the White Sox being worse than us. Now my only consolation is that the Yankees might be as bad as us. So, what's the right answer? Trade everyone? Fire everyone?...I say NO! You get to sit right square in the middle of the hot mess you made. Smell it every day and breath deep baby because this is what you created. Don't like it? Then clean yourself up and get yourself out of it. -

My thought was - how bad are things when someone laments the loss of Chris Herrmann? Have we really fallen that far? -
Article: Give Alex Meyer A Chance To Start
gocgo replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'll end this whole debate. You can never have too much pitching. Every organization knows this. Arms tire, injuries happen, and the need for guys who can throw the ball across the plate and get outs never ends. Everyone in the Twins organization wants Meyer, Gibson, Santana, and yes, even Nolasco to succeed. -

One step backward...that may also be used to describe what the fans are going to do this year in regards to the the ticket booth. It's pretty tough to get inspired to buy a ticket when your team is 9 games under .500 only 9 games into the season. Let's face it, in MLB, a winning streak is 3 games. You make up ground by winning 6 or 7 of 10 at home and then winning 5 of the next 10 on the road. When you dig yourself into a hole in April that you should only see in August, the enthusiasm to spend $50 for a ticket and food (that's on the low side) tends to wane. I'd love to be optimistic, but being realistic is probably the the better way right now.

I take full responsibility for these 6 losses. I haven't been engaged enough to watch a game yet, but that ends today!....sort of. My son has baseball practice this evening and I might have to leave before it's over. Once again, my bad. I don't see it as the Twins being off to an 0-6 start. Rather, I am off to an 0-6 start. -
Article: Trending (4/7): Too Early To Trend
gocgo replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think there's a lot of positives to take from the two games so far...and some negatives. Positives - Gibson's sinker was working pretty well yesterday. He had a lot of weak balls hit, one with eyes and a blooper that should have been caught that led to the first run. - Buxton at bats looks like he has a plan rather than going up there flailing. - Park doesn't look overmatched and appears to be a really smart player. - We've given up 7 runs in 2 competitive games...compare that to last year. Negatives - Walks. When you don't have strikeout pitchers, free passes hurt more. - Right field...no shocker there. - Rosario's lack of a plan at the plate. He could be really, really good if he had a plan other than hack at anything close. - RISP 1-12. Ouch! Too early to call a trend. -

I dunno. Sometimes rockets get caught and sometimes bloopers fall. It usually evens out over the course of the year and, in the end, if the bloopers were caught and the rockets weren't, the ERA would probably be the same.- 14 replies
