  1. No, he's not going to School of Mines. He picked another school.
  2. He's thinking along the lines of internet security actually.
  3. Great intro RB. I brought my oldest off to college last week...big step. Cross the fingers. In South Dakota they have a place called the School of Mines. Not sure how it got that name, but I'm thinking that if they wander off the beaten path, they get blown up. Didn't want to deal with all the aftermath of that so I convinced him to pick another college.
  4. I agree with that last paragraph. The question was, who puts butts in the seats and obviously we don't care if the butts are in the seats in KC or Atlanta or wherever. The reality is that we a locked in for Joe for the next two years and that isn't changing.
  5. Do I? No. Just saying that kids still get excited when Joe comes to the plate. Parents like happy kids. Does that mean they buy tickets? Dunno, but I can tell you that if their kids do not get excited about going to the park, they aren't buying tickets.
  6. Yeah, when it comes to pitching, less is more. Let's just start with the fastball. If you are going to miss with your fastball, you want to miss low. Missing high (like thigh high) tends to make the ball disappear over the fence. Speeding up tempo is different than speeding up delivery. Tempo is just the time between pitches - get the sign, throw the ball, don't think about it. My guess is that is what Neil Allen was trying to tell him. "You just got lesson number one: don't think; it can only hurt the ball club." - Crash Davis When you speed up delivery, the tendency is to leave the arm behind which screws up the release point and causes the ball to go higher than intended. So, if I were coaching him, just start with the fastball and let's work on getting that down in the zone where a mistake won't hurt you.
  7. Whew! Glad that no-hitter is gone...now I can watch. I would have felt bad if I'd turned on the TV and blown the no-hitter.
  8. "1. Unless you want to work forty hours a week – Giving 100% at work is extremely easy to do. It equates to about 20% each day based on a 5 day work week. There is really no excuse… so give it a try." RB, the opening comments made me think of that old SNL bit - Deep Thoughts with Jack Handey....which made me want to look up some of them: If you're robbing a bank and your pants fall down, I think it's okay to laugh, and let your hostages laugh too, because come on - life is funny. If you ever accidentally drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone. Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion. For instance, let's say you're an astronaught on the moon and you fear that your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the moon pieces, wham!, you just slam the door behind him and blast off. He might call you on the radio and say he's not Dracula, but you just say, "Think again, bat man."
  9. Right you are...and the CBGB club stood for?...country, bluegrass, and blues...of which the Ramones and other famous bands that started there play very little or none.
  10. Well, if we are going for an outfielder with lousy luck that isn't too busy, look no further than Mallex Smith. The Braves promoted Smith to the major leagues on April 11, 2016. He debuted that night against the Washington Nationals, starting in center field. Smith went 1-for-3 in his first game, with a strikeout and a single against Max Scherzer. Smith's helmet lacerated his forehead on a stolen base attempt in the fourth inning, and he left the game. On June 20, Smith fractured his thumb after Mets pitcher Antonio Bastardo hit him with a fastball. The next day, Smith was placed on the disabled list and expected to miss eight to ten weeks of the season. After a July reevaluation, his return date was moved to September. Braves interim manager Brian Snitker later stated that Smith would likely miss the remainder of the season.
  11. When we closed the Metrodome, didn't we reenact Hrbek lifting Ron Gant's foot off the bag at first?...maybe I just made that up.
  12. ....and that also answered the question about your ability to withstand pain and suffering.
  13. I don't see Grossman in the Twin's future. If you were putting together a defensive outfield, you have Kepler, Buxton, and Rosario. So, the question is if you want Grossman off the bench as a 4th OF. Well, he isn't a defensive improvement. Offensively, you could bat him for Buxton, but if you are going to bat someone for Buxton, why not bat a guy who has more power? So, I would prefer ABW or Palka coming off the bench over Grossman. I think Buxton will be brought up to stay. What's the point of watching him clobber AAA pitching? We know he can do that. So, I see him on the roster and playing CF where he is a game changer.
  14. I think trades can be assessed similar to a spring training assessment of a team...by the number of IF's involved. So, in this case, I think we know what we have in Santiago - a lefty #4 starter who's 28. Bunewhatever - a hard throwing kid who lacks control. They, on the other hand, are saying IF Nolasco can stay solid like he has for some of his recent outings and IF Meyer can get healthy and IF he can solve his control issues....more IF's = less likelyhood of success.
  15. Read them now...they are reading the reports that they got fleeced. They thought Meyer was better than what he is. They know Nolasco isn't as good as Santiago. They are not happy with the trade now.
  16. Liked the Abad trade. Nolasco trade is a wash...he was owed 12 million next year. We are paying 4 million and if Santiago goes to arbitration, it is estimated he will get 8 million. So, even from the money standpoint. I think Santiago and Nolasco are pretty similar other than the arms they throw with. Meyer for the a AA flamethrower isn't bad. Disappointed in not moving Suzuki. Overall, a C+ for Antony.
  17. Saving 20 million? We are paying him this years salary PLUS 4 million next year AND Santiago will probably cost about 8 million next year if he goes to arbitration. I see this as a wash in terms of money. You can debate if Meyer is worth the prospect brought back. I see Santiago as a left handed Nolasco.
  18. Got it. OK, sounds like we are paying the rest of this year and 4 mil next year. Hmmm. Well, I guess we need a lefty in the rotation since I don't see Milone in the rotation next year.
  19. So, we gave up Meyer to get rid of Nolasco AND we sent money to the Angels to pay for his lousy contract AND we got a guy back who is a FA next year? I don't think this is a good deal for us.
  20. Is the fact that Suzuki isn't being talked about an indication of how bad our catching is? I mean, he's our starter and no one even wants him as a backup???
  21. They will build a base from these guys and then spend big for pitching.
  22. I'm trying to find which teams are listed most frequently in no trade clauses. Not finding anything. Anyone have any insight on this?
