    Other than you could get actual MLB value out of him more likely, as opposed to continuing to hope. I don't know what I'd do in this particular case, but this team, and other teams, try so hard to make starters out of guys that will never be that, they lose out on a lot of good RPs, imo. Oh, and those players lose out on money, since they have failed careers.

    you'd rather have 6 years of an unknown commodity, than 3 of one of the best pitchers on the planet? And, others won't sign SP to long term deals, where, exactly, do people expect to find great pitchers?

    If they tender Grossman, I will seriously question why they have their jobs. He does one thing well, and it isn't all that valuable. And, it is cancelled out by how terrible he is in the field. It would make no sense at all to keep him around.

    From a news post today.... Today looks like a big day in the drive for major league baseball in our town, as the Portland Diamond Project is set to announce that it's secured land rights for a stadium site--rumored to be the Port of Portland's Terminal Two along NW Front Avenue, a mile or so downriver from the Fremont Bridge. Nice setting, underused expanse, but it's a mile or more away from MAX. Maybe the Frog Ferry could have a stop there

    He was not a good starter in the minors. He's finally succeeding, and people want to change that. I don't agree.

    my thought on Astudillo.......give him a shot to prove us right or wrong. That is what other teams seem to do, trust results and see if they stick.

    If you need a LHP starter for some reason, you have Mejia.....I wouldn't move Rogers in a million years. He's doing what he should be.

    That's not how it works........plays in the OF are MUCH more difficult than plays at 1B. The data is clear, there just isn't much difference between ok defense at 1B, and great defense at first, but there are huge discrepancies in the OF.

    Your argument seemed to be they'd still have holes, this year.....which is true. If he's great for years to come, they should be able to fill those holes. If not, then it doesn't matter if they sign him or not, if they still have that many holes 2-3 years from now, this team will be bad. So maybe I didn't read your post correctly. They can afford as many players as they want, it depends on how much profit they want to make. Atlanta made 100 million last year, with a similar payroll and tv deal......so there is money to be spent if they want to. Would it be a massive percent paid to one player? Yes. Does that mean they can't find ways to make it work? Imo, no. But, I understand the counter argument, especially based on what they are likely to do, vs what they could do.

    no one, I don't think, is arguing to move him there full time......but to have him in a rotation of Sano, Austin, Garver, Astudillo, Kepler, and now Cron.....because sometimes you want people to rest....and because sometimes you want others in the OF so he can "rest". Plus, he's 25.....why do people think this is his offense going forward? Sometimes you might want to pinch hit, and he might move to 1B. But, imo, now that Cron is here, it's very likely that he's the full time 1B, and this is moot.

    I hope they are making decsions based on the future, not past.......this team isn't winning squat if Buxton isn't great and playing. Cron and Cave combined can't produce what a great Buxton can. And, if Buxton is bad, those two can't produce enough to make up for it....not for a playoff team.

    Well, he's going to be great for years....not just 1-2. I don't understand this argument at all. And, they'd have money to spend still. Just not a ton. That said, he's not coming here, because they'd never offer him what other teams will. Which is certainly defendable.

    I like how people believe in Cron, but have decided a much younger Kepler is a finished product offensively.....

    the median start in the majors last year was 5.1 innings......starters don't go long anymore. They just don't.

    I have no idea why he couldn't pitch more innings than that......but, here is something to consider.....only 50 pitchers pitched more than 170 innings last year.....so pitching 170 isn't some demerit. It just is how the league works. There is no reason to not use him as a starter, from an innings perspective at least.

    I'm not ready to give up on Buxton and Sano yet, but I don't blame anyone that is. Part of the problem is that they added no long term players last year, none. Had they added one last year they'd have one less hole this year. But, they went all in on short term free agents, and did not sign one long term player. Now, they need to replace all the short term signing except Reed and Pineda and Odo, who, btw, are gone after this year (and not were good last year, two were injured).

    So, you are planning to punt on another year of Sano and Buxton? If so, which might be realistic, shouldn't they be trading Pineda and Gibson right now?

    The issue isn't that, it's that if they keep him until spring training, they spent 5MM on him. And not someone else (or putting more money on a better player). Whether they spend the money eventually or not, they spent some of their FA money. It is, of course, possible he is cut before spring, and they use the money on someone else (they'd be on the hook for around 500K). But, realistically, do we think that's the plan?

    I'll try to explain my thoughts. 1. That is 10-15% of the FA budget. That's not an insignificant number. 2. They can cut him during the time they are signing FAs, but that seems really, really, unlikely to me. 3. If they have 45MM left, and a good SP costs 20MM a year, that leaves 25MM. Now you need two RPs, that's another 15-20MM, and a 2B, and an OF and maybe a backup #B. You are out of money before you even get to 2B or OF, unless you want to spend a lot less on players, in which case, it is harder to get real impact. 4. I don't believe they have any where near 60MM to spend.

    I hope they acquire some long term assets this year. They've acquired one MLB player that was for more than 2 years so far....one. So, while I think Gray is an interesting bounce back option, that leaves Pineda, Gibson, Gray and Odorizzi all with 1 year left on the team. That doesn't scream long term competitiveness to me.

    It simply isn't true that "the same people complaining" wanted Cruz.....you know, like me, nicksaviking, and vanimal, for instance who wanted a rotation of guys currently on the roster. And, for the money to be spent on difference makers at SP and an OF that they could trust (and rotate into DH some).
