  1. How good or bad does he have to be to not be on the team for you? He can only play about 100 games a year now.....and only 1B or DH. He's a league average hitter at the easiest defensive positions in the game (league average including pitchers and catchers in the numbers). What does "can't perform" mean to you? I'm just curious.....also, it's not hard to replace him. Austin, Garver, Kepler, Sano, 4th/5th OFer at DH some, free agent, trade. All of those are likely to outhit him next year, and offer position flexibility. I'm assuming if he was the worst hitter in baseball, people wouldn't want him on the roster....how far up the list do people have to go for him to be on the roster of a very good team, playing 100 games, and only at 1b/DH?
  2. How would you decide, based on like 10 spring training games? And, if you do that, you aren't signing a FA or trading for competition for him, are you? So, he kind of wins...... No, he doesn't deserve it at all. He got a contract, both sides honored it, and now he should be judged as being more or less valuable than other options. If not, how many years does this go on? Because at some point, everyone here would stop playing him, even if he wanted to play until he was 100.
  3. he's not even close to playing in 120 games at first base two of the last three years......
  4. BTW, I think they should have called him up. It's both the wrong, and right, thing to do. I'm on the right side on this one.
  5. He will have played less than 100 games at first base 2 of the last three years. He has never once played in 140 games in any season in his career. Ever. Three of the last five years he hasn't started 100 games..... Where do people come up with starting 140 games, given that?
  6. Agreed. I will be very disappointed in this FO is he's back. He doesn't even play 1B in half the games, and he has zero power (which makes the OBP fairly empty compared to other hitters). He's not likely to get better next year, but other options are. But we've been over this in about 6 threads, so I doubt I'll reply a lot here....people have made up their minds.
  7. Well, if it is the same money or more, then it isn't about the money........but that's not the argument. The argument is that if the money is DIFFERENT, then the highest bidder is going to win.
  8. Average players are fringe backups? What does that make Joe Mauer? Does anyone think Castro will play less than Garver? Not with this manger, imo.
  9. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/byron-buxton-and-september-service-time-manipulations/
  10. I was reply to a comment that said Mauer would be better than Austin..... But, even w/o that, Mauer can be replaced with a lot of other players. I listed adding a corner OF, for example, who can also DH. I listed 4-6 players that can cover 1B/DH, and most likely outhit Mauer pretty easily. As for catcher, I too would like an upgrade on Castro...and I'd like Garver to play some 1B/DH when he's not catching. He's too good a hitter to sit around 1/2 the year. Mauer isn't good, compared to other 1B or DH. The lineup you propose is pretty much this year's lineup. I am not interested in this team standing still, not even a little.
  11. Hey look, he's not coming up. Just like Austin has sat 25% of the time, and Belisle and Gimenez are playing since coming back.
  12. I'd hand him the Cf job, but I'd have found another OF too, a good one. Cave, Kepler, Rosario can all play center if Buxton doesn't work, but I want a really good OF brought in, assuming Machado is out.
  13. Chris Gimenez is your starting first baseman today, while Austin sits.. ..
  14. I hear the prisoner is on Amazon.... Need to watch the whole thing
  15. How is Mauer better than Austin next year? Because he hasn't been this year. First base and DH for me next year are... Austin, Kepler, Garver, Sano, Rooker when ready. Sometimes the other corner OF they bring in is the DH, whomever that is. It's possible, though unlikely, that is Kiriloff.... At some point. I'd try to sign another catcher, since Garver can play first, OF, and DH.
  16. Why? I mean, I like the conversation.
  17. I'm not sure how this sentence is supposed to make me feel good: In 45 2/3 innings, he had allowed just seven homers. That rate puts him 132nd among RPs.....now he's nearly the worst among qualified RPs at 155 (Reed is 156 out of the 158 qualified RPs this year).....when I looked, I saw three Twins in the bottom of the rankings....I wonder what that means? edit: more like 125th or so, I think....but whatever....
  18. Congrats to Mauer. Dude was a raking machine earlier in his career.
  19. they haven't at all, but people on this thread are literally doing that. So I'm not sure what point you are making here.
  20. Let's just say Fangraphs isn't as high on him as others.....the rankings aren't universally agreed upon.
  21. Sacrifice bunt in inning 4? Sign me up!
  22. Well, hitting and fielding and base running, going forward......and position flexibility, not just DH and infrequent 1B.
  23. no one is saying 25 HRs.....but single digits, with not many doubles anymore, and an inability to play in the field even half the games matters...... I'm still not sure I get the "25 best on the roster" thing......he is a DH and part time 1B. I'd rather have Garver at 1B, and Kepler, and Sano, and Austin and Rooker. That combination allows them to have options they don't have now, and also very likely results in much better hitting. It isn't just power, or just walks, or just singles, or just doubles.....it is all those combined. And, all those combined, he's not as good as any of the players listed above, other than Rooker, who has a chance to be as good or better going forward. Mauer was a great player. He no longer is. It is possible that if he played 120 games at first his defense would matter, but since he doesn't even play 81, there just isn't enough accumulation of extra outs to make up for what he does on offense compared to other options.
