In the spirit of the internet, I will post this before fact checking it. But iirc when the Seattle Seahawks were a new franchise, they played their first season the NFC Central with the Vikes Bears Lions and meatpackers, before switching into the AFC West their second season. -
That is also one of the 2 or 3 ways I will remember Kep (2 are positive and 2 of 3 aint bad)

May be so. I wouldn’t say it is completely different to minimize base running and bat swinging, which have their own funky torques and movements too. Either way, it would have been nice to hear something like what you said from the team, the trainer, or Buxton himself back in May. But we didn’t. Imagine the Twins talking about Jorge Polanco or Tyler Mahle or any other player’s injury the same way they talk about Buxton’s injury, to the point where Levine didnt even speak the word injury in response to that interview question. I do like Levine. He’s got an honest communication style that I think other executives dont.

Thanks for transcribing. For all we know, the sizable input from team doctors could very well be: Buxton is cleared to play outfield as well as run the bases. Levine’s comment about “ultimately up to Byron” should be very concerning to some people. Aside from the usual aches and pains, is this team actually encouraging guys to play through injuries that are hurting their performance? Look. This Buxton situation could pay off brilliantly if Buxton starts hitting and ramping up in center just in time for the Twins to play in the postseason. This makes the discussion fun. In the meantime, if people are bothered by the discussion, nobody is forcing them to participate. 🙂

It is fun to do, and I’m sure the Twins are doing it too. I am on board with your idea of trying to manage Ober’s innings a little bit. I also like your idea of letting Gray start Sunday, and to add to that maybe even giving him and Lopez an extra day to report to Oakland. Maybe, dunno. In theory the starters for the first couple games against Oakland would roughly line up to face Cleveland at the end of August and then line up for the first postseason series, although it obviously gets a little sketchy trying to predict out that far.

There was a great article about Sonny Gray in the Strib. Sounds like he’s been a good influence on Joe Ryan. Here’s another funny story: One of the best compliments Gray received came in Game 3 of the 2013 American League Division Series. He was lights out in Game 2, pitching eight scoreless innings for Oakland against the Tigers. During a benches-clearing incident at the end of Game 3, Gray remembers staying in the background as players yelled at one another. A's interpreter Ariel Prieto told Gray, "Miggy wants to see you." Gray, who was in his first major league season, was confused. This was during the middle of the benches clearing. Prieto reiterated, "Cabrera." Gray shuffled around and didn't know what to expect. "I get over to Cabrera and he's like, 'hey, you've got good stuff, man. You've got good stuff,' " Gray said. "I'm like: 'Thank you, Mr. Cabrera. I appreciate that.' I didn't know what was happening."

Except for the part about people overthinking this, your last paragraph is exactly right and does not contradict the idea that he is still going to be eased back into center field at some point. A tweet from March:

I literally said the athletic trainer is an important job. I didn’t demean Paparesta in any way. I get that you are incurious about this and don’t want a deeper discussion to happen. However, it is worth talking about. There are lots of other angles to it beyond just Buxton. Like what changed between mid-May when Buxton was scheduled to go back out into center, and today. Why hasn’t Buxton been put on the IL. Why have other head athletic trainers taken the fall for Falvey in the past. One thing I like about Thad Levine is he is refreshingly honest in the things he doesn’t say. I don’t get the impression he wants to gaslight us. He recognizes this is a subject worth talking about.

One thing Levine said is they were waiting to hear from Paparesta and Buxton. Paparesta is the brand new head trainer and not exactly one of the medical professionals per se, at least not in the sense you intended. Important job, but not one of the doctors.

Welcome to the site! Gladden talked about how Mullins robbed Buck of that home run Friday and how maybe it would get his competitive juices flowing to go back out there, and in the interview with Levine, it was more about what wasn’t said— for example, Buxton’s knee wasn’t mentioned. So we wait.
