  1. I still see this team as likely sellers rather than likely buyers
  2. I think they're making the best of their current situation but I really wish they would have been able to sign some international free agents the year they had the biggest IFA pool.
  3. I think Mejia might be the guy moved to the bullpen. 21 starts and only 5 of them longer than 5 innings. Even with those short starts he was just average. .761 OPS against the first time facing a batter (which isn't that impressive), .933 OPS against the 2nd time. Very seldom in the game for a 3rd time around the lineup
  4. That would be like the ownership saying "Do you want a top end starter or a full rotation of competent starters? We can't afford both".
  5. The Twins should be shopping FOR Ervin Santana. Get him a nice Christmas present.
  6. I agree - Dereck Rodriguez is currently a free agent and shouldn't appear on the list.
  7. I think Burdi is a must-add. He can go on the 60 day disabled list and not take a roster slot if needed. That essentially allows the Twins to protect him with a 41st roster slot. I would protect Gonsalves, Littell, Reed, Burdi and Thorpe. I really doubt Lewin Diaz would stick on a roster. He doesn't play defense well and teams can't afford to carry a rookie DH who only hit 12 HR in low A ball last season. The Twins probably will cut Kennys Vargas and Vargas is much, much more likely to contribute to a big league team. If someone wants Eades or Bard the Twins should trade them to that organization before the draft.
  8. They need a veteran player to be the closer, not necessarily a guy who has saved games in the past. Saves cost too much in arbitration to be giving them to rookies and inflating their salaries unnecessarily. Give saves to the cost-certain veterans.
  9. "Rays and A's are barely hanging on highly profitable despite bad stadium situations" Fixed that for you. "Indianapolis is a much larger market without a team" In what world is Indianapolis a 'much larger' market than Portland or Montreal? It is smaller than both of them and considerably smaller than Montreal. I think people underestimate how poorly managed the situation in Montreal was before they left. There was the MLB strike, followed by a fire sale of a contending roster. They repeatedly screwed up the marketing and then sold to Jeffery Loria so he could actively sabotage things to the point where he could relocate.
  10. Expansion would be a net bonus for revenue. National TV would be worth more as there would be more markets actively engaged in watching baseball. Attendance and other stadium revenue would just push nearly the same amount of people into 78 games instead of 81. Most people watch 1-5 games a year in person and they would still be able to do so.
  11. I don't see a lack of quality pitching, I see a ball that is way too easy to hit over the fence. Strikeouts are at an all-time high (good pitching), batting average are slightly below historical averages (.255 v .260 to .265) and HR are way up. With fewer HR nobody would think there isn't enough good pitching.
  12. The elite relief prospects (Tyler Jay, Nick Burdi, JT Chargois) all got injured. The second tier of Busenitz, Curtiss and Hildenberger has been performing well but the upside was always limited.
  13. "The Twins had signed him to an eight-year, $184 million deal following his 2009 MVP and it was looking like he was going to be worth every penny." 20 WAR and counting since that extension. At $7.5M per WAR that's $150M of value. Joe produces 4 WAR between now and the end of the next season and the Twins break even on that investment.
  14. 1 WAR is generally worth $8M on the open market and the Twins market Mauer like crazy. 2 years, $20M would be a lot more likely.
  15. Based on how many big leaguers there are and 33% international players the expectation should be 1.5 players per draft will actually contribute.
  16. Garver is the same age as Vargas and is hitting better than Vargas at the same level. Plus, Garver is just crushing lefties (1000 OPS) and is a better fielder.
  17. Kintzler's other advantage on Neshek is his $1M discount on remaining salary
  18. "Santana, Berrios, Mejia, Garcia and Colon" Add Santiago as the 6th starter and this has to be the most Latino pitching staff I can remember. Dominican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican, Dominican, American of Puerto Rican descent.
  19. Hughes is still better than Colon and they're considering pitching Colon. They haven't cut Hughes because he's still one of the 12 best pitchers they have.
  20. Fernando Romero was not a terribly expensive signing. The Twins will find some pitchers.
  21. Rosario reminds me of a young Sammy Sosa - loaded with talent and aggressive but still learning the game. Not all people who remind me of young Sammy Sosa turn into an older Sammy Sosa. Regarding his defense - UZR might be overrating Buxton and underrating Rosario. If their range overlaps and Buxton is taking the discretionary chances between CF and LF then Buxton will look good and Rosario will look bad. The same phenomenon happened with Andruw Jones in the Braves outfield. I agree that consternation regarding Rosario looks pretty tone deaf considering his performance of late.
  22. Seems a little enthusiastic. I still have him as the #3 SS prospect in the Twins system after Gordon and Javier.
  23. Midwest League All Star Game is next week. Palacios, Diaz, Blankenhorn, Poppen, Beeker and Kranson are on the roster. Moves typically happen after the All Star Games. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2017-midwest-league-star-game-rosters/#lO6iXXW1i8RQgYkY.97
