  1. I think I'd rather promote Austin Martin to AAA than Palacios. Martin has a .439 OBP in Double-A. For comparison, Martin has a similar RF/9 to Palacios but more errors at shortstop. Wichita's schedule is done September 19 but St Paul plays until October 3. I think we'll see a bunch of transactions on 9/20.
  2. Palacios is having a good year but an 800 OPS doesn't scream "promote me". That's not as good as what Nick Gordon did in 2018 and he was two years younger then than Palacios is now. I haven't heard rave reviews about his defense which makes me believe he's behind Royce Lewis, Austin Martin, Jose Miranda and Nick Gordon on the organizational depth chart. He has earned himself another season but I don't see a reason to protect him on the 40 man roster this offseason. Similar players will be available on minor league contracts as free agents.
  3. It is incredibly common for young pitchers to get injured. Of the pitchers who get drafted, 30-40% will require a surgery while in the minor leagues.
  4. If you think a player could be better if he just does "fill in the blank" then you have to keep him around long enough to see if he can learn how to do that. Grabbing waiver wire projects is fine for the rest of this season. I'm not concerned if they're learning in AAA or the big leagues as long as they have a plan for each of the acquisitions.
  5. There's plenty of time in the offseason to discuss what should happen in the offseason. Until then I think I'll watch some baseball.
  6. I guess it's never too early to start the offseason around here. Sometimes it feels like a perpetual offseason.
  7. Jose Berrios was basically a 6 inning starter and he's top 10 in innings pitched. One thing I've often wondered is why starters need as much rest now when they're throwing 80 pitches as they did when they threw 120 pitches. A smart team could shift to a 4 man rotation and get 8 more starts out of their ace.
  8. Yes, players have to be on the 40 man roster to get on the 26 man roster. Furthermore, September will only be a 28 man roster in 2021.
  9. No, Ober does not need to go 7 innings. That's not what starting pitchers do anymore. Pineda is barely averaging more than 5 innings per start. If Ober can consistently go 5 innings and keep the team in the game he's a 4th starter. I'm skeptical that we see the Twins bring up many of the real pitching prospects. Strotman, Balazovic and Duran are on the 40 man roster so we could see them but they will not want to add players early. They already need to evaluate Jax, Barnes, Thorpe, Gant, Burrows, Alcala and Garcia to see if they are worth keeping for 2022. Remember that you don't get to add the whole 40 man in September anymore.
  10. Lewis Thorpe should be done with his rehab stint soon. He's going to have to make a good impression or he'll be cut this offseason because he's out of options.
  11. Looks like just Birdsell went unsigned Twins sign twenty of twenty-one draft picks - Twinkie Town
  12. Palacios is having a good year at AA but hasn't forced his way to AAA the way Miranda did. I imagine the trade deadline will force some players up the ladder. The Twins will need to move an infielder from AAA to replace Simmons and that should give Palacios a spot at AAA.
  13. Well, on Twitter he just announced he isn't signing, so probably unlikely to be the first one of the draft picks to make it to the majors for the Twins.
  14. Pretty much relievers and not very many of them - Brusdar Graterol, Lewis Thorpe and Edwar Colina are the most recent. They traded away Huascar Ynoa. Fernando Romero was a bust. Silva and Liriano both came in trades.
  15. 5 years, $100M seems like a significant discount compared to what each of them would get as a free agent. If possible the team should sign both of them to a contract of that length and value.
  16. Yes and no. They need a spot for him at the next level, which means Palacios has to get promoted too. It's important to make sure he's successful. 750 OPS in 140 plate appearances doesn't scream "promote me". Canterino is the player at Cedar Rapids who is the most impressive.
  17. I'm pretty convinced that some of the success found by pitchers after leaving the Twins is cheating. Some organizations seem to have a "knack" for increasing spin rates.
  18. I think those three, Palacios and Miranda are looking at a mid-season promotion but I'm in no hurry to rush players up the ladder. There isn't a huge difference between Double-A and Triple-A.
  19. This means Marwin to 3B, which is a pretty good idea. That should improve the defense.
  20. There were a few catchers let go who could be the backup in 2019. Kevin Gausman could be interesting like Walker and Nelson
  21. There is a potential defensive alignment that could be a plus. Marwin is much better at 3B than he is at any other position, which is the key to improving in the infield. 3B Marwin Gonzalez SS Jorge Polanco (live with the avg defense for the plus bat until Royce is available) 2B Adrianza or Nick Gordon 1B Sano LF Arraez - if he's having this much trouble at 2B at age 22 it could get ugly quickly CF Buxton RF Kepler That would be a legitimate plus outfield and an average infield. Another defensive upgrade would come from replacing Castro as the backup catcher with a plus defender. Castro's glove slipped last season.
  22. I think this is the kiss of death for the players called up to Rochester to end that season. Good news: you are promoted to AAA. Bad news: you're probably getting cut this offseason.
  23. The most cost effective signings for team control are college players. 3 years older, less risky as far as flaming out completely and closer to contributing as a big leaguer. You don't have to burn option years on players in single-A when you draft them out of college. I like this strategy of getting college pitchers in bulk. If nothing else it should provide a steady supply of relief pitching.
