  1. The 20 year olds in full-season ball are pretty interesting. Rortvedt is the youngest guy in full-season ball (19) and the jump from high school to Cedar Rapids has been a challenge for him so far. The 20 year olds are generally having pretty good years though: Luis Arraez - was hitting at Ft Myers but now injured and out for a while Lewin Diaz - not impressing so far Travis Blankenhorn - hitting well and playing 3B, any reports on his defense? Aaron Whitefield - no walks but impressing at the plate, more XBH than Blankenhorn Jermaine Palacios - destroying the Midwest League in his second try Lachlan Wells - pitching very well at Ft Myers Then you have 21 year old Nick Gordon impressing at AA which cements his place as the #1 prospect in the system.
  2. Turley should be in line for a quick promotion to AAA. I would want to see him continue his success there before a major league callup but: He's lefthanded He's striking batters out like crazy
  3. Cut Danny Santana, sign Angel Pagan. Problem solved.
  4. Nobody mentions that it is a lot easier for a lefthander to get by with diminished stuff than a RHP? I think Phil Hughes ends his Twins career as the long reliever.
  5. Berardino of the Pioneer Press reporting that Duffey had his changeup working yesterday. http://www.twincities.com/2017/03/25/twins-jose-berrios-has-no-wbc-regrets-after-being-optioned-to-triple-a/ "Flashing a much-improved changeup that he used to both righties and lefties, Duffey produced a whopping 21 swing-and-miss strikes while going to just a pair of three-ball counts."
  6. I didn't say he had too much coaching. I think he may already be close to his ceiling because he has had the benefit of growing up in a batting cage.
  7. Can he field? My biggest doubt is that he can perform like an average MLB corner outfielder defensively. I don't see this mentioned at all in the article. I also have some concerns that with the amount of training and coaching he has already received he's close to his ceiling with the bat. That was essentially the case with Delmon Young. With extensive coaching from his dad, Delmon had already reached his peak at age 20 as a hitter and the glove just kept getting worse. I believe he can hit and has a high floor but I question the ceiling. He's going to have to hit a LOT to be valuable if he can't play defense.
  8. Good job analyzing the holes in the roster. I am not worried about slots in the rotation for Berrios. Teams routinely use 7-8 starting pitchers during a season. "Too many" starting pitchers will quickly sort itself out in April when someone is inevitably hurt. The 10 day disabled list will also encourage the AAA shuttle if a starter is going to miss his next start. You may see 9-10 starting pitchers used this season. I agree 100% that the Twins need to add a starting caliber outfielder and dump Grossman and Santana in favor of an outfielder who can play the field. Rosario should be the backup at all three positions. Yasiel Puig is actually a very good fit since he hits RH and can play defense. The bullpen is all back-end guys. Swapping Duffey for May should improve the rotation AND the bullpen. A full season from Chargois like his September would be nice as well. There is plenty of room for a veteran to help solidify the bullpen.
  9. Kepler can play 1B too if they really need a 1B prospect.
  10. The things that make a catcher a "bad" pitch framer are things like moving up and down when the ball is received (bouncing), pulling your glove through the zone while receiving and setting up too far away from a pitch which makes you reach. Good receivers minimize the motion required to catch the ball. They also tend to naturally move each pitch toward the center of the zone by extending their arm toward the pitcher when they receive. Keeping your thumb pointed toward the center of the zone is another technique. Good receivers do this without a lot of effort.
  11. "From what I've seen, MN MiLB needs a lot of legit prospects, period." The top pick in the 2017 draft and the biggest international bonus pool should help.
  12. The top 4 and Lewis Thorpe (highest upside pitcher in the system) please. I don't think Vielma or Granite will stick on a roster all year. Shake a tree and 10 gloves fall out but only one bat. There are a ton of no-hit CF available as free agents with MLB experience. Turner is a maybe but I doubt he sticks even as a backup all year. I doubt Niko Goodrum makes the big leagues for more than a month total.
  13. Aren't pitching coaches and managers usually joined at the hip? Molitor and Allen might both go at the same time. Regarding front office hires, the new boss thinks there are too FEW people working in that area. It makes sense to keep the experienced people you have and add to the organization rather than getting rid of decent employees and starting over completely.
  14. They have let Sano play at 3B. He's bad. He makes a ton of errors, more than any other 3B by rate in 2016. If he cleaned that up he could be below average but it will take a LOT of fielding reps.
  15. I think the defensive upgrade has to start behind the plate. There is an opening and a defense-first catcher makes lots of sense, especially if Garver is the backup. I don't think Sano is good enough defensively to play anywhere but 1B so giving him starts there when there is a LHP and benching Mauer makes sense. Other days he is the DH. Playing him at 3B is nearly as bad as playing him in RF. Trading Dozier is a move that makes sense considering the current state of the team. Polanco moves to 2B - a position he is better equipped to handle defensively. Find an upgrade at SS defensively or just play the adequate Eduardo Escobar there until Gordon is ready. I agree that Rosario, Kepler and Buxton could be good defensively in the outfield. Adding a good defensive 4th outfielder instead of Danny Santana would be helpful also.
  16. If you're dumping Old you have to include Park on the list. He's going to be 30 and hasn't proven anything yet. I have no idea why people want to release Mauer to play Park. Park should be dealt to a team that doesn't have as many options at 1B and has a relief pitcher that looks interesting. They need to balance this roster and get rid of some all-bat players.
  17. I'm sure Blyleven would appreciate adding Holland to the pitching staff.
  18. Maybe they found out what the Pohlad's are willing to pay as a salary.... Seriously though, there are many reasons to not take a job. The Twins are not just hiring one guy, they want two - a President of Baseball Ops and a General Manager. Which job did each guy turn down?
  19. Would love to see the Twins go after Bautista this offseason to mentor Sano.
  20. Vargas was sent down because he can't play the field and they have too many DH on the roster.
  21. Joe Mauer is Ted Simmons but with a better glove. Ted Simmons should be in the Hall.
  22. The Twins ruin prospects two ways They promote them too slowly and the player stagnates OR they rush them too quickly and the player is overwhelmed. No matter how the Twins promote prospects they are always clearly wrong in hindsight.
  23. Highest upside arm in the system could be Lewis Thorpe. People are excited about Romero, but Thorpe was better before surgery than Fernando.
