    The difference was that the rays had a legit contender. The Twins were a playoff team not based on the merit of their team but the futility of the others in the division. The Twins should have never been spending that much prospect capital for 1/2 a season when they really were not contenders and 1 additional season. I have no problem with them trading Steer and CES given their limitations but not for a short-term SP, especially one that was not the type of dominant SP needed in the playoffs.

    Me too but hard to imagine Skenes gets past #3. Right now it looks like Crews then Skenes or Langford.

    I was hoping we would have a shot at Langford but he is going 2nd or 3rd. He is hitting 400 with an OBP of .521 and more walks than Ks. His OPS is 1.343. I have been pissed about passing on Carroll for the past 4 years which grew in intensity with every year Cavaco floundered. That was the most impactful mistake this FO has made. Imagine him in CF instead of MAT. They better not get cute again. Take whichever of the 5 top guys is available. That is most likely Jenkins or Clark. Of course, there are surprises quite often so who knows. It also might help that we have a larger bonus pool the Rangers.

    Their options as I see it were to DFA Kepler or Solano or send Julien down. Sending down Julien with Polanco out makes no sense. Therefore, they would have to DFA Solano or Kepler. Here is where your point about impacting player's career enters. DFAing either would be a very bad look with players and agents for the reasons you cited. Veteran players and agents definitely believe they are due greater respect, especially if part of the logic is to play a prospect had 2 good games. Teams simply can't treat players this way. Kepler has been with this organization a long time. The right way to handle it is to eventually find a trade partner or pass on his option. It's a different story if he starts hitting well below league average. Solano is a little different situation but he is performing about as expected. To dump him 1/3 of the way through the season would be looked down upon by players and agents.

    Thanks for the link. That was an interesting read. I kind of doubt the Padres are "disappointed that Diamond Sports Group failed to live up to their contractual agreement". Sounds to me like a better product that will reach almost triple the number of homes and do away with blackouts. I would assume all of the teams are hoping to take back their broadcast rights. It will be very interesting to see how this impacts team revenue over the next few years, but you have to believe the accessibility and reach will produce greater revenue. Hopefully, this change mitigates some of the disadvantage the Twins have had in terms of TV revenue.

    Good point. I did not think about comparing to Kepler directly. I think Castro is the new Gordon. He is even more versatile because he has a better arm and therefore can play 3rd. Pretty decent base steeler as well.

    I agree that we can't just be cutting players at this point in the season, especially based on literally two good games for Wallner. However, I would like to see Wallner or Larnach take Kepler's roster spot over the course of the season. They are unlikely to just DFA Kepler so this could take until July or even the deadline. The versatility of Lewis / Castro / Farmer and Gallo will provide plenty of options in terms of how they manage the transition of the roster in general. While the main guys need to be better, the others guys also need to contribute a little. Vasquez has been horrendous lately. His wRC+ for May is 14. MAT is not much better at 34. These black holes in the lineup have killed a lot of opportunities. Buxtons wRC+ for May is 90. That has little value as a DH so if this continues, he needs to play CF and MAT goes to a 4th OFer and defensive replacement role. Perhaps Julien becomes a semi-full-time DH.

    Good point about the need to find depth for 2024. I too was wondering how that would be achieved. (maybe they extend Gray) The guys with the highest ceilings have had lots of questions. Let's hope a couple of them emerge over the course of the season among the group of Enlow / Balazovic / Raya / Headrick / Prielipp and Festa. It would also help if Canterino gets back in the discussion by the middle of next year even if it's a BP role.

    I sure hope they don't replace Varland with Maeda. Valand is an important part of the future. Let's find out if we can count on him now. Send Sands down and put Maeda in the BP. Julien for Polanco makes sense. Julien needs to play every day to work on his defense. Perhaps they should give him some reps at 1B so that he has some positional flexibility. That would make it easier for him replace Solano.

    Fans need a scapegoat, and they don't want to blame the people (players) who are directly responsible for the failure. Do we think coaching is somehow responsible for the Twins being 4-47 with the bases loaded? You keep using facts and logic. People don't want to hear it and facts will be ignored because fans need to complain when their team does not win. Last year we heard the constant drumming about Rocco pulling pitchers based on a spreadsheet. Well, the Twins SPs are at the top of league in average IPs proving your point and mine. Your point being players make all the difference and my point that people are still complaining about a spreadsheet while ignoring the fact Rocco has proven he is quite willing to ride with pitchers worthing of being trusted.

    I agree they matter. However, fans see what they want to see. The point was suggesting the uninspired play of the position play is poor leadership and let's just ignore the great effort from SPs is not exactly consistent. The two biggest culprits of poor play are Correa and Buxton. They are seasoned players who are supposed to be leaders themselves. Not to mention most posters here were adamant the Twins resign both players. There was a lot of "if they don't sign" these players they are not serious about winning. We sure ignore whatever gets in the way of complaining. We have a meager understanding of Rocco's leadership. From what players and former players convey, he appears to be a pretty good leader but we have little in terms of actual knowledge. Evaluating leadership requires a close-up evaluation of actions and interactions over a period of time. Ranting here about leadership is naive. BTW .... teams pay $8M per win in free agency. If a manager made that much difference you would have managers getting paid $30M/year.

    Apparently Rocco is a great leader / motivator of starting pitchers but can't motivate position players. Apparently getting paid $33M/year does not inspire performance. Is lack of motivation what influences Buxton to swing at pitches with absolutely no chance of being a strike?

    The majority of people here were very supportive of the Mahle trade. There were loud cries that we had to go for it because we were in 1st place. There was a minority that wanted BP additions but were against spending that much prospect capital on a team that may have been in 1st place but were definitely not contenders. Arraez would have just been another guy standing on base while Buxton and Correa failed to deliver. Buxton looks lost and Correa has been anemic. Both were extremely popular signings for most TD followers.

    Rosario hitting 341 in may with a wRC+ of an even 200. He is ready for the next level.

    I have not seen enough of him in CF to have an opinion as to if he can hold his own in CF. He would be a real asset if he could play an average CF. Maybe they should send him to STP to play CF for a couple weeks.

    So you would ignore how he is playing now and assign playing time based on him not playing well last year? Vasquez really sucks right now but he was good last year so should Rocco also ignore Jeffers is hitting far better than Vasquez because Jeffers played poorly last year. I guess he should quit playing Castro too based on last year. Kepler's offensive performance this year is well above average and he is a well above average defender. There should be no mystery as to why Rocco is playing him as long as he keeps it up.

    He started out fairly slow but is crushing it in May. His May stats are 338 ave 1081 OPS and 205 wRC+. I thought he looked great in spring training so I was a little disappointed in April but he has to be the Milb hitter of the month for May. Now Rodriquez has to get it going. He is my disappointed of the year so far.

    I don't think it's undoable. Teams turn around quite frequently. Adding Kirilloff was big. Getting Correa right would also help a bunch and he has been looking better at the plate. Lewis will be here very soon and Julien needs to take Solano's roster spot if we get enough guys back from injury. We also have Polanco and Kepler out. All of this adds up to plenty of opportunity to improve significantly.

    I really don't care about winning the division if that is accomplished with a 500 record. Winning the division will be a hollow victory if we don't have some young players step up an establish themselves as the future. Kirilloff and Varland have been bright spots. This team really needs Royce Lewis to succeed. Larnach or Wallner or both need to step up.

    Polanco and Kepler need to stay healthy. Thielbar and Maeda in the BP would help a bunch. It sure would help if Royce could give us the same boost he provided last year. Kirilloff / Polanco / Lewis should make our lineup much better than what we had to start the year. Correa's ABs have been looking much better. He was swinging at a lot of bad pitches early in the year. Maybe it's optimistic but I think there is hope. Perhaps we can do what Cleveland did in the 2nd half last year.

    never mind the fact that Garlick was the only twin to have any offensive impact. That would get in the way of complaining.

    Sometimes the most obvious answer is correct. They got 4 hits. That won't win many games. When Baldelli starts taking ABs, I will blame it on him. Until then, I am going to assign blame to the players who don't perform.

    They say these things even out over time. I hope that happens in this case because we are going to score a bunch of runs when we get to the part where it evens out.
