AJ Puk was also starting for the Marlins, after being a reliever. Now they are moving him back to the pen after starting him was an unmitigated disaster, and that's being charitable. Not saying that would happen with Duran, I believe he is a better talent from the getgo, but I would stick with what works for Duran

Introducing the 2024 Consensus MLB Draft Board

What picks do the Twins have in the top 150 players? Can that be added to the article? -
One hit??? All we got was one G@#*@#n hit??

With all the short reliever options, that's the way they should go. If guys are getting overused just dip down in AAA and grab the next guy. I don't really see the need to roster a long reliever.

I still think they will get another starting pitcher. Maybe RYU, Cleveringer (sp) or maybe via trade or maybe they work out a interesting contract for Snell or Montgomery. But I don't think they are done yet

Couple of things. Kepler isn't going to be an option to play center. Soler can't play center or first base. The Twins currently have other options for center ( Castro and Gordon) and first base ( possibly Julien, Farmer, and Vazquez and Miranda) all of which come with question marks. I would prefer Adam Duvall, who also mashes lefties, could be had on a one yr deal, would be cheaper, and can play all 3 outfield positions plus first base. I have no issue with Soler, but I would fear he would take away at bats from Wallner and I think, based on what the front office has said, Duvall would be a better fit.

I don't see JD Martinez as fit necessarily, bc of having one person as a DH. If they do sign JD I think that would signal that instead of limping or DH along with Buxton he would go to the DL. I think Cody B, Jordan M, Blake Snell would be the three best opportunities for Correa type contracts of all them, if the Twins would go that route. Otherwise we are pry looking a reunion of Donnie or MAT, or someone like Adam Duvall

Assessing the Twins' Trade of Jorge Polanco
pierre75275 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In order for this trade, by itself to have hurt the 2024 team, that means the Twins internal options to replace Polanco will need to worse then him. So Julien, Farmer, and maybe occasionally starts by Castro and/or Lee if he gets called up and a rotating DH (of which Polanco would have been a part of) would be worse than Polanco this year. In addition to that, Topa instead of shoring up the pen isn't good at all, and in addition to that, Andrew D implodes as a 5th starter. I don't believe all those things happen like that. Andrew D is a depth piece and will be used accordingly, but most likely isn't on the team come Oct. Topa shores up the bullpen, leaving several options in AAA if he doesn't. I think at the end of the year, Julien's numbers and WAR are higher than Polanco's and he has played more. Now if you want to say the 2024 team is worse than 2023 bc of the loss of Kenta, Gray, Pagan, Taylor, and Solano, I wouldn't argue that, but this trade moves the needle in the right direction.- 99 replies

Passan reports polanco to Seattle
pierre75275 replied to notoriousgod71's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The Giants are paying 6 million of his salary already. Plus Seattle is sending 6 million plus cash to cover Topa's salary. The Twins will pay next to nothing of Andrew D salary for 2024 -
Right handed outfield bat...Michael Taylor? Spelling Buxton in center a couple days a week and Kepler against a tough lefty while Castro covers left field?

I liked Polanco very much and wish him the best in SeaTac. I am excited to see how Julien does over a full season. With the trade of Polanco, I think Farmer and Kepler stay out now. Farmer, at least, to bat for Julien against tough lefties out of the pen, and as a late inning replacement. And to spell lewis and correa. I think Kep stays bc they don't want to rely on both Larnach and Wallner in the outfield with Buxton. That's a lot of question marks. So I think Kep stays.

So... Andrew D is getting paid 12m for 2024, 6 mil is already getting paid by the Giants, plus 6 mil is now getting paid by Seattle, the Twins will pay much less than league minimum for him, plus Seattle is also sending cash to pay for part of Topa's salary. The Twins payroll will be around 115mil now. The cash coming back means two things. First, the Twins could dump Andy D for nothing and be out very little, second, just bc they traded for him, doesn't automatically place Varland in the pen. Paddock isn't going to be able to pitch a full yr coming off of TJ no 2. Varland will get starts next yr, as will SWR, and so might Headrick and Festa. So for Polanco, the twins got a N0 5 starter they are paying very little for, a middle reliever who was very good last yr, a top 80 prospect, and a throw in. Yeah I feel like that is a lot for Polanco, given his medical history the last 2 yrs and who the Twins have waiting to replace him

A few (more) words on Joe Mauer.

That was an awesome write up. If someone can, I would love to see the video of that at bat -
That's a good point but I don't think the team can only consider offense. Farmer can also play SS and 3B, Polanco can't, and Farmer's defense is also better at second (if you want to, provide stats to prove me wrong, I'll tip my hat to you). Also, I feel like Polanco needs to play every day to be effective, and Farmer less so.

I would hope that Farmer doesn't get traded, specifically for this scenario if Polanco does

If Buxton can play center 60% of the time and rest 20% of the time and only DH the rest, then keeping Polanco makes sense. If Buxton is going to be DHing a majority of the time, keeping Polanco doesn't make a lot of sense, bc then Julien will be on the bench or in AAA, and neither option makes the team better. I like Polanco a lot, but it seems like from the business side of things he is on his way out of the org.

I seem to recall several occasions last year when Julien was called out on pitches out of the zone on strike 3. Obviously not 128x but I think he will get a lot more of the close calls bc of his rep of having an excellent eye at the plate and not being a rookie. I would expect his 2 strike numbers to be better this yr and he is one guy I don't expect to regress.

I know you have to give in order to get, but I will be really disappointed if the twins trade either E Julien or Matt Wallner as part of a pitching package
