I honestly didn't think it would happen for Louie this year. I was thinking next year but I love this move. He has been the most consistent pitcher in the high minors this year. Somehow he even turned it up a notch after getting to AAA. He has earned and deserved this shot IMO. Go gettum Louie the fans are behind you win or lose.

Minor League Report (9/1): Matt Wallner Has a Monster Night
Dman replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Man what a game for Wallner. I am always hard on him with the K rate but when he has nights like last night all the little stuff gets forgotten. 5 for 6 and hits for the cycle just a special, special night for him. He started off slow but with that performance has finally moved his OPS into the 800 range at AAA. If he stays locked in then he could still reach the 900 mark which he will need to press for MLB time. With Helman the base stealer at the top of the order then Wallner and then Williams who might have the hottest bat in the system and the stronger Palacios, that is a tough top of the order for any pitcher to face. Wallner's power is something to see. The ball gets out so fast seems like the camera has a hard time catching up to it. Jullien is the heart and soul of that Wichita team. Another HR and another walk with 3 total hits and only one out on the night. Not sure what more this guy can do as he is AAA bound next year for sure. Sabato with a good night and finally moved his OPS in the 700 range not that great but it is better than Martin's 674. Feels like the arms in the system are tired as the scores in these games are getting out of hand but still a very good night for lot's of the hitters in the system.- 18 replies

Twins 10, Red Sox 5: The Nick Gordon Show
Dman replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hadn't thought about that before but if he can OPS what Kepler can or more and play just as good defense then that makes a lot of sense to me. He has the speed. He has the arm. Now he seems to have the bat so if they wanted to get some value from Kepler they could. It would help make room for Wallner as well. I like Kepler but this team needs to find room for young guys and I think Kep could be the odd man out.- 44 replies

3 Disappointing Seasons from Twins' Top Prospects
Dman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I tend to agree. Of the three Canterino can still come back and be an elite pitcher. I still kind of think he will end up a pen arm given his age and recovery time but he could be an elite one. I really think Martin will have a bounce back year next year. He has a good eye at the plate and good bat to ball skills. I am a little concerned teams have shifted him and he is not getting those hits up the middle he used to get. He also is one of best base stealers we have in the system. I know that is not a coveted trait anymore but it can help especially when you need to push a run across late in the game. I wouldn't give up on him just yet. Of the three Balazovich worries me the most. Lot's of evaluators said long lever's can make control of pitches difficult and it seems like that is coming true. Balazovich has the stuff to be successful but if he can't control it he will never make it. I am surprised there has been very little improvement the entire year. I don't know if he comes out of this funk or not but have to give him another try next year to see if he can. He has too much potential to just throw away at this point. At any rate I agree I think we need some patience yet with these three and IMO I think they will be worth the wait.- 43 replies

Had to look twice and check the Box score to validate Miller walked 5 times. For a player with such good plate discipline you would think the BA would be higher than .212. Not sure why he is having contact issues but I thought he might get better as the season went on but so far this seems to be who he is. I get that he is only 19 with plenty of time to learn I just thought given the apparently good eye at the plate he would also have the ability to barrel more balls.

Twins 10, Red Sox 5: The Nick Gordon Show
Dman replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins needed that win and it was nice to see them score on another teams pen for once. I kind of thought after that ugly inning the Twins might not score again but was happy to be wrong. I also thought they would throw Gordon something low and away out of the zone with two strikes as he does like to chase but they didn't and his HR was the back breaker. Happy for Nick who is moving that OPS into MIranda range and looks like someone who could hold down a legit full time position now. He finally seems to have found a bit more power which has changed the calculus on what he can do at the plate. Anyway the Twins need to keep on winning to either catch the Indians or grab a wild card spot. So keep it going please.- 44 replies

Finally got one of those much needed big time hits with the bases loaded and that was the difference maker. If this team could just come up with those a little more often they would still be leading the division. At any rate a solid game all the way around for these guys and hoping they keep the win streak going because the Yankee's are coming and I expect this team to lose those games.

Safe or Sorry: The Twins Have Two Pitchers to Question
Dman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have to believe both will be gone at the end of the year. I like Bundy's style for the most part. I like the way he attacks hitters despite the lower velocity fastball. I think he is a solid 5th starter but honestly I think the Twins will pass on bringing him back next year. Pagan just hasn't been good in a long time and I would hate to lose a player in Rule V to save Pagan. The Twins need to build a solid pen and he just doesn't have that great of control and he allows HR's like no one I have ever seen out of the pen. It is past time to move on and give him a fresh start. The Twins are going to have some tough decision to make at some point on the 40 man. They traded for Mahle and have Gray and Ryan locked in as well. They have Maeda, Winder, Paddack, Ober and Dobnak set to come back from the IL and will count against the 40 man at some point and then they have Balazovich, Enlow, Strotman, Sands and Henriquez all sitting on the 40 man currently as dead weight. If they want to keep them then they need to add SWR, Canterino and Varland as well. That is 15 pitcher's right there not even including the pen taking 40 man space. Hopefully they choose the right arms as we are going to need better arms to compete with Cleveland next year. I don't think Bundy, Pagan or Archer are difference makers for this team next year so if it were me I would let them go.- 39 replies

Minor League Report (8/25): Varland Continues Dominance
Dman replied to Theodore Tollefson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I will second this. Varland has been the most consistent pitcher in the upper levels this year. I know there are pitchers coming back from injury but it would be nice to see what he can do at the MLB since this team isn't going anywhere anyway.- 20 replies

It's Time to Shut Down Byron Buxton
Dman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Totally agree with you here. All reports I have heard have the team doing their best to monitor Buxton's health\readiness to play. They have given him time off whenever he needs it to rest various ailments so they are not pushing him to play every day. I am not privy to any of the conversations they have but I assume his whole situation has been dealt with in good faith for helping the team and Buxton. The team and Buxton mentioned at the beginning of the year he would be getting extra days off throughout the season to try and mitigate nagging injuries. They had a plan from the start of the season and this was it. Also remember he has an incentive laden contract and the Twins certainly appear to be doing what they can to help him earn the incentives and Buxton is trying to help the team by playing when healthy enough to play. I know he has been shut down with the hip issue but I still think the team and Buxton will continue to do what they can to help each other be successful. He has the offseason to rest up and heal and maybe there are more preventive measures they can take for next year but I don't see a reason to put him on the IL until both parties agree it needs to be done.- 68 replies

It's Time to Shut Down Byron Buxton
Dman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It might me time to shut him down but when a player has incentive clauses in his contract that becomes a tougher decision for both sides. Shutting him down might be the right thing to do but I don't think they will do it.- 68 replies

From what I understand Williams hasn't caught much this year so he fits as emergency backup catcher option maybe like an Astudillo role? He has mainly been 1st base and DH and keeping him healthy seems to have improved his bat's production. I thought Seth said once that Isola was good behind the plate but someone also said he has only thrown out 1 runner in 20 some tries so not sure just how viable he is back there. I would think he has a decent chance to stick at catcher but I don't know much other than what other people have said about his defense. If memory serves most teams pick defense first guys in the Rule V draft. I know we lost Turner to the Reds one year via Rule V. Not sure if an Offense first catcher with no MLB experience would be too large a risk or not. We will know more about how the Twins feel about Isola when Rule V roles around.

Yeah I am wondering if it is an all International outfield at high A next year with Urbina, Aguiar and Rodriguez. With Mercedes and Jose Rodriguez not far behind.

Can Simeon Woods Richardson Be Better Than Jose Berrios?
Dman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I started high on SWR but I am becoming the low man on him recently. I guess my biggest concern is that his arm seems to wear down after a month or so and I am not confident he can remain a starter. While I have seen him pitch efficiently as a pitch to contact pitcher and he has also had some very good K rate games just like Berrios there always seems to be a big inning given up at some point. So I guess I still have my doubts. Having said all that he is very young for the level and as he gains more experience and hopefully more consistency I think he has the potential to be as good or better than Berrios but he will have to be better than he currently is to get there IMO. -
Chris Williams just keeps on hitting. He has a solid OBP and 23 HR's on the year. He and Isola have some pretty good consistent numbers this year at the plate. Palacios looks ready as well after brutal start to the year his number look pretty impressive as well. Was hoping for bit more stat wise with SWR but at least he didn't blow up completely. Big game from Wichita and a must needed win to fend off Tulsa. Camargo seems to be getting back into the groove which is nice to see. Nowlin stole the show with 11 K's and 6 innings of work late in the season but Lee is still looking good and more than holding his own the high A level as well. If he keeps this up he will be a fast mover. I still think it is going to be interesting to see who the Twins protect in the rule V draft.

Minor League Recap (8/19): No-Hitter, No Problems
Dman replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Wasn't quite sure Gossett was going to get it done. Two outs in the 9th, he walked two batters and had thrown 115 pitches or so. Tying run was at the plate and he looked out of gas. He pulled it off though against one of the best teams in the league so have to say that was impressive. Palacios is still hitting and playing good defense he seems like a must add for next year. Prato yet another utility guy playing very, very well. Twins have lots of under the radar guys this year.- 14 replies

Technically there is no rush but the longer you leave it and if the player does perform then you will have to pay much, much more to buyout the later years. After two to three years most players just wait it out for FA unless the team really pony's up. It is a risk for both sides to do it early but if you think you have a superstar or even above average player on your hands and want to keep them though their complete prime which is around age 33 for me then best to strike early if you want a deal. The downside is if the player gets injured or regresses then the value you might have received goes down. It is a gamble not to be taken lightly but given Miranda has always had good contact skills and has improved his plate discipline over time he seems like a good bet to only get better IMO and thus cost more money down the road.
-
I think the Twins should try to extend him. He does not provide much defensive value but the bat is just sooo good and he doesn't K that much so I think he stays this good or better at the plate. Always risky with early big contracts and potential injury\performance regression to the player but if the player does work out the savings is substantial as well. For Miranda I think it is a risk worth taking.

I am going to echo that Jose Rodriguez was not someone I was expecting to be "this" good. I can't remember anyone with that much power in the DSL. Those guys are so young they don't usually develop power that early. For 17 years of age he sure looks special. As high on the top three signings as I am one thing I do know is that DSL numbers are pretty meaningless. When they hit the FCL those numbers are likely to come way down. Still looking good early is way better than looking lost. We will know a lot more about those three once they hit the FCL though. Ross with another Home Run. I am really hoping he can stick at short although I read that he is likely to move off of short so who knows. At any rate if the bat is for real they will find a place for him and if he has HR power that would be an amazing find coming from a D2 school.

First let me say congratulation to Simeon Woods-Richardson on the promotion. SWR and Varland seem like the only legit rotation arms coming out of AA this year. Hopefully they thrive at AAA as well. Also congrats to Jaylin Nowlin. He has been surprising as a starter. I thought he was a relief arm only pick but he looks like he has the stuff to start. Will have to wait and see but a well deserved promotion at any rate. Extremely happy to have something positive to say about Balazovich. Very solid game and it feels like that hasn't happened in some time. Hopefully he has turned a corner and turns back into the dominant pitcher he can be. Evan Sisk sure looks like a lefty that might make some noise at the MLB level His numbers are pretty much the same from AA to AAA really good WHIP and ERA solid K rate as well. I think I like him better than Moran mainly because he seems more consistent. Hopefully he can become another good lefty pen arm for us. I am always hard on Sabato and I still think he is more of a mistake pitch hitter but he worked the count 2-0 and didn't miss the pitch down the middle. Good for him as he came up strong in a big moment and won the game. Lawyerson has been amazing this year. I kind of lost a little faith in him after last year but he is back stronger than ever another 40 man decision most likely with the year he is having. Adams is back. Was nice to see him performing at high A just like he did at low A. Pretty much dominated. Hunter McMahon is a bit old for the leagues he has been in but he has been dominant as well. Would be nice if they moved him to AA soon and see where he is at with guys more his own age. Still an excellent season for Hunter. I was very curious to see how the smaller school Ross would do in pro ball. Would he have any power? would he have the same level of plate discipline. I guess he pretty much answered those questions in this one game with the HR and the bases loaded walk. Gonna be keeping my eye on this guy as he might be a legit shortstop if the bat plays. Has been cool to see Urbina hitting really well and with some power his second time through Low A. Was a little worried last year. Guessing they let him finish where he is but he should start at High A next year. Great night for all the affiliates although they had to pull off some magic in a couple of those games. The better these guys do the better I feel about the system.

Twins Minor League Report (8/16): Wind Surge Blows Away Tulsa
Dman replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
After St Paul was up 9-0 I had them penciled in for the win. It would have taken an epic melt down to lose that game but when you have Henriquez on your team bad things can and did happen. Henriquez came out of it with 4 K's but giving up two homers and six runs is just unfathomable for a guy who was a top 10 prospect in the Twins system (I see they dropped him to 22 now). Moran comes in and also gives up a HR which is exactly what you don't want to see from a guy you hope can make it back to the MLB roster. And for as good as the hitting was early they never scored again the rest of the game so big healthy boo to the offense as well. Baseball is a crazy game. Wichita what can you say. I have been pretty hard on SWR especially about K rate and looking more dominant at the AA level. He really looked good. The line could have been a bit better because the WHIP was higher than you would like but still that is the kind of fire I have been looking for and was happy to see. I have been a big backer of Holland until recently when he looked pretty over matched at High A. Maybe a fresh start was needed? He is taking walks, not striking out as much and hitting the ball really well. I know he won't stay this hot forever but still those are all good trends and I hope he can keep that up. After Lee hadn't had an extra base hit I was going to write that he needed to work on developing more power but he beat me to the punch with his HR last night. I have to say he has been impressive at hitting the ball where they ain't. He is not a guy I would shift on as he finds a way to put the ball in the open space no matter where that is on the field. I hope he dominates and starts next year at AA. The Twins might finally have options at short in the future. The Twins need to move Cardenes up. He has an unheard of 1.171 OPS in August and his July was elite as well. Low A ball is a tough hitting environment and has more than proven he is ready. Get one of those catchers they drafted to take his place his bat is ready for the next level. Mercedes and Jose Rodriguez among others keep doing there thing in the DSL. The hitting pipeline is alive and well even after the deadline. Pitching could still use some help.- 23 replies

I am happy they finally came through with runners in scoring position and finally broke a gamer open. Even if it was against the AAA Royals they needed a game like this. Happy to see Sonny dominate and the Twins need to win these games to stay in the race. Hopefully this builds some confidence and things start falling their way.
