    Good analysis and agreed that this team needs to get a lower percentage of WAR from free agents. What about Cleveland and Tampa who regularly trade major leaguers for prospects? The Twins didn’t do a ton of development with Ryan before calling him up, but his repertoire has continued to evolve. Falvey has done a great job of modernizing the Twins front office, and took the player acquisition and development a significant step forward from TR, but has hit a wall on the continuous improvement timeline. This FO still has a journey to take

    139 runs allowed on the season 5th best MLB wide. Yes pitching, especially starting pitching, also this is a heavy flyball pitching team 44% ranked 3rd in MLB and has a MUCH improved outfield. I was skeptical of Bader, but happy he’s contributing well. Actually having left fielders with wheels in TF’s spacious LF is a good thing. More important than I have credit previously.

    It did in 2024 and 2023 (3.0 fWAR was a 4 way tie at 30, 31, 32 and 33 in 2023, in 2024 it was 37 and 38) If you want to go back to the 70s and 80s and compare that to today, you have to normalize on innings pitched to compare counting/cumulative stats. The game has changed.

    Exactly, top 30 out of 150ish pitchers who make a traditional start is a top quartile, statistically significant better than median starting pitcher. Maybe he’s 35, maybe he’s 25, it doesn’t really matter if it’s 31 or 32. He’s not a top 5% he’s not a bottom 2/3. Lots of value there.

    2024 full seasons at 130 IP ERA 3.6 according to FG is ranked 38 FIP 3.44 ranked 25 xFIP 3.44 ranked 18 WHIP .99 ranked 7 2023 full season at 160 ip ERA 4.51 ranked 35 FiP 4.13 ranked 31 xFIP 3.76 ranked 19 WHIP 1.17 ranked 18 i never said he was a super star, or an ace, I said he was a top 30 starting pitcher, of which for two full seasons plus, he objectively has been. His first year of arbitration isn’t until 2026. I’m happy with that. There’s value with trading him. I don’t think they should, but there’s value.

    You were quoting ERA as gospel last week. His 2.93 ERA is ranked 25th. WAR ranked 31, WHIP ranked 4th. you should try watching baseball, it’s fun

    I have two issues with the OP one is that prospects are the currency of trades. Trading major leaguers for major leaguers doesn’t happen very often, certainly not frequently for players of consequence. Trading major leaguers for prospects, then flipping those prospects for other major leaguers can happen, that’s a lot for one off-season. That’s likely a longer term rebuild that takes you outside the current window. The hitters are old, and feeble. Secondly, this team isn’t one hitter away, and with the ownership big money wasn’t coming… Aaron Judge wasn’t going to make this a good hitting team. the OP is correct, in that this team needed more done to it to succeed, but the prescription missed

    51%? He could be bound and gagged in the dugout, and all we’d hear is “put away your spreadsheet Rocco”. It was a stupid call that cost two runs. 2 runs should not be insurmountable. Rocco doesn’t throw a pitch, or swing a bat. the players gotta play, Falvey needs to get some players who can play. and yes, Rocco needs to manage like he knows what he’s doing.

    Here’s the thing with ERA, the runs have to be earned. Last year Twins pitchers were punished by ERA in part because the fielders behind them were statues. Lowest range metrics in MLB last year and lowest errors. They weren’t charged with errors because none of them could get to the dang ball. this year, Buxton and Bader in the outfield swings the range metrics quite a bit ranked 12 in MLB (way too early for sample sizes, but I’m going with it anyways). But man that infield… France is short, he’s scooping the digs OK, but a couple throws per week sail by a couple inches that 5’10” Carlos Santana would have stabbed. Lee and Correa are good, but that’s only two of the three, which brings us to the old school .981 fielding percentage, 25th in baseball with 21 errors tied for 7th most. last year ERA was ballooned by the crap fielding, this year buoyed by it.
