Can Change-of-Scenery Help Sanchez?
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Yankees just signed Rizzo - the penalty does not matter to their bottom line. They have always been willing to pay. Donaldson is not done, with Rizzo, Kiner, Torres, and Donaldson they have an excellent IF. I know everyone wanted to get rid of Donaldson and his contract, but it was not his contract that held us back, it is the Twins budget. Donaldson still performed well and did what was expected. They saw what they wanted with Rortvedt, and he pairs with Higashioki which means NY values quality behind the plate. Stanton, LeMahieu, Hicks, Judge and Gallo round out the lineups. We do not match them.- 52 replies

I am glad I proved your point, it proves we all look at stats and have our own takes. I do hope he is great for us and I do not argue that he is good pitcher, just not as good as I see projected.

4 Things to Keep an Eye on at Twins Spring Training
mikelink45 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope Kirilloff stays healthy, but he has a history "Kirilloff has a history of issues with that same wrist, which he sprained in April 2019 while playing for Double-A Pensacola. Following his initial return from that injury, he went back on the IL for two and a half weeks in June after the wrist continued to bother him." according to Byoung Ho Park. He missed 2017 for Tommy John and has played 100 games only one season. He games played since signing - 55, 0, 100, 65, 65, 94, 61. He has the bat, but we have to monitor his health.- 18 replies

Today's tribune says Thorpe and Jax might be the BP answer? Depends on what question you ask. Do you agree. I think Duran would fill a role better.

Can Change-of-Scenery Help Sanchez?
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sanchez has been in MLB for six years his BA (yes I still like this stat) over that time: 299 278 186 232 147 204 OPS+ has been under 100 three times. I am not expecting much, but as rv78 says they like the big K sluggers - Sano, Sanchez, Rooker - next up Wallner and Sabato.- 52 replies

I read that list with amazement - not because it is good, but these look like pickups for a fifth place BP. Not for me. Put Duran in the BP for a year and work him up to SP for 23.

4 Things to Keep an Eye on at Twins Spring Training
mikelink45 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would still watch the left side of the IF - who is 3B and who is SS. We hope Miranda makes the team, Arraez is in the 2B traffic jam but could be at 3B, Urshela was 3B at NY and they only played him intermittently at SS - was there a reason? They want Torres at 2B which is why they want our one day SS. There is no one else to challenge for SS now. Who wins the K/HR battle between Sano and Sanchez for DH? Who else can catch? The Rookie pitchers - who will take charge in this shortened ST? So much drama.- 18 replies

Let's look at Gray's career - not just last year. Going back from last year his WAR totals have been: 0.8 5.9 0.2 1.1 1.6 -0.3 5.4 3.3 So which do we get? What do we choose for comparison? Berrios was 3.2 last year - a virtual tie, but going back: 3.2 0.7 3.1 3.4 3.1 1.9 For consistency - Berrios wins.

This looks like a fifth place team - let's hope the next additions are more exciting that the Twins fire sale. After all the movements the SP has added a #3 (#2 at best) and a #5 (Bundy) and a SS that the Yankees wanted to have play 3B. 2B is solid - maybe the only IF place that is. I would not want to create a fielding and batting lineup from this. And Jeffers really has to improve a lot. Any injury to him and we take another step back.

I upgraded my whirlwind summary in the forums - day 5 - I put in the NYT reflection on the Yankees which has them giddy over their infield rebuild (with our players) and then from today's tribune - Baldelli says Urshela will be given a chance to be SS. So we have an infield rebuild too and I think the Yankees are happier.

Nick - you nailed it. I am completely on board with you. Now we have a question at 3B and I hope Urshela is not the new SS. We are weaker at C which is a premier position, we have now done all kinds of maneuvers in hopes of getting someone as good as Berrios and have failed, even losing our number one draft pick. We have a catcher that NY was happy to get rid of who has seemed to lost his hit tool and is a lousy catcher. Will the Twins splurge on Story and then look to dump his contract in the future? Is Story really that good when he is not at Coors field? "For his career, Story is hitting.302/.367/.605 at Coors Field and.242/.310/.437 on the road."

Sonny Gray Gives Twins a New Jose Berrios
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wanted to see how lists put the two of them and I know this is a lot of fantasy baseball listings, but they are looking at analytics as much as anyone. Pitcher List ranks Berrios number 28 over all in MLB. Gray 56. Razz Ball has Berrios number 20, Sonny Gray 32 Roto Ball has Berrios 21, Sonny Gray 51 Yahoo sports has Berrios 26, Sonny Gray 50. Streamer has Berrios 25, Gray 50 Bill James has Berrios 13, Sonny Gray 42 So after all the maneuvering if we were going after another Berrios because we let Berrios go then we not only got a lesser pitcher, but lost a number one draft pick pitcher, and got older. So let's just say we got a starting pitcher and wait and see what happens.- 79 replies

Ranking the Twins Top-5 Power Tool Prospects
mikelink45 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Next I would love a look at the best bats for getting on base - I still like 300 hitters. Looking back at Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Clemente...they hit the HRs, but they also hit singles, doubles, and triples. I miss that.- 13 replies

I hope the Story dream comes true and that he is able to duplicate his success without Coors field. But we had enough money to sign him without all these moves. I am just waiting to see this all come together in some masterful chess move that puts us over the top or not!

WAIT A MINUTE - we were sitting in suspense for 100 lockout days for this craziness? Let's just trade everyone for a 2B. We won't be any good, but the depth chart at 2B will be amazing. Bill James has Sonny Gray rated the 42nd SP and he is now our Ace and everyone is excited because we "only" gave up Petty. This is amazing. Bleacher report had Garver number 14 among catchers and Sanchez 22 - a step backwards there. I need some good news.

Why is the MLB increasing the size of its bases?
mikelink45 replied to Melissa Berman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Tradition is hard to define - I feel that way too, but for me it is retaining the 50s and 60s because those were the eras when I was young and really invested. But baseball has always changed. They lowered the mound after 1968 - the Bob Gibson Rule. The original pitching position was in a box where the pitcher could move around. In 1893 they raised the mount and put in the rubber. It was 60 1/2 feet from home plate. 1857 was the first rule on bases - they had to be 1 foot square. Check out the link - a lot of issues went into the foul line and base placement. Rules have changed often in the history of baseball. No more spitters, Sacrifice fly was adopted - dropped and brought back. Ground rule doubles were home runs then they weren't. 1969 the strike zone was shrunk. The DH was added and then there are the unwritten rules, the changes in statistics and metrics, the PEDs, the allowance of Blacks to enter MLB. It is hard to get a handle on what Tradition really is and I still want it to go back to my era.
