    Lots of good choices above. I will separate out high draft picks who just never did much even in the minors, like Jay (or Eddie Bane, going into the way-back machine), from people who showed great flashes and teased us with great minor league performances. Fernando Romero was just untouchable at times- I saw him pitch in A ball with a WHIP under 0.9 and 9 K/IP. Great stuff. McCarty was called up from AAA with an OPS of 1.106. Restovich, definitely another one.

    There's a new standard: if Harold Baines made the Hall, X should go in. OK, that's not my standard, but whaddya gonna do? It's a thought experiment. X definitely includes Nathan and Hunter. Not AJ, and not Morneau. I'm only sorry about one of those last two. If you take Morneau's talent and put it in AJ's games played you'd have a surefire HOFer.

    Good article, but I believe you missed Buddy the Elf. Agreed, 75 games without a loss, half of them with a team who seldom won, has to be worthy of some kind of career memento. Imagine a whole stadium full of fans wearing headbands that said "BUDDY". Wouldn't that be heart-warming?

    Moving to pitchers- Mike Marshall, age 36 in 1979. Led the leage in games, games finished, and saves. 142.2 IP in 90 games. ERA+ of 166. Jerry Koosman, age 36 in 1979, 20-13, 263.2 IP, ERA+ of 130.

    I'd like to know the predictions made by the owners, the player's union, and the American Medical Association so I can take the average. I sure hope he gets to play 131 games, that would be a really good summer. However it works out, Buck deserves to be on the field.

    Yeah, of course the Mets would do that trade again. They basically gave up Gomez about four years before he was any good and nothing else. Phenomenal trade. It does point out the risk of a free agent contract, though. One good year and a few memories for $130+ million, signing a guy with no history of injuries. Yikes. Glad it's not my money.

    Yeah, Doug Corbett was a good player for the Twins, sorry to lose him, but very happy with the return on that trade. Big Shane Mack fan, too. Jim Holt...not so much. Making matters worse, one year it seemed like every pack of baseball cards I bought had a Jim Holt in it.

    Thanks, this was an interesting look back. Gonsalves- totally agree, I had high hopes for him and busted. Baddoo- was surprised they left him available, was surprised he was taken, was really surprised with the results. I'm predicting a big sophomore slump. Wade- didn't mind trading him, but I wish it had been for someone who might actually be a major league pitcher someday. Littell- also agree, I always liked him and was surprised they let him go.

    In addition we drafted some players we thought were cinnamon rolls who never rose (get it?) to that level (Kohl Stewart, Stephen Gonsalves, Tyler Jay, Alex Wimmers, Ryan Eades, Luke Bard, Mason Melotakis, Hudson Boyd all first or second-round picks other than Gonsalves who could be part of the team now but aren't). Berrios in 2012 and Gibson in 2009 are the last two high draft picks with some pitching success for the team. Let's hope Chase Petty breaks the streak.

    With a universal DH Sano becomes a lot more valuable, too.

    I think this is pre-lockout "we gotta get a body" panic. I'm pretty disappointed we didn't sign anyone else, but we need to sign more pitchers and they weren't all going to be great. Or maybe very good. If the stoppage goes until Feb 15 this might look like a good play. Worst-case scenario is we cut him and that's the way it goes. At least he's going to pitch this year, unlike the initial Pineda signing (which didn't work out that badly). We'd like the big splashes to come before the marginal deals, certainly, but as long as this is one of the marginal deals I don't have a problem with it. If this is the best pitcher we sign, or the second-best pitcher we sign, it could be a really long season, kind of like "Spahn and Sain, then pray for rain." Ober and Ryan, then watch the team dyin' Ryan and Ober, then quit being sober See, there's a lot we could do with that.

    Couldn't they just have made a waiver claim to get him back? This is a signal about his expected value, unfortunately. I think if anyone is picked and stays for the year it will be Palacios.

    Understood, but he was 23 at the time...nearly ten years ago. I don't see it.

    Eduardo Escobar has played one game at shortstop since 2018, and he's never played more than 25% of his games at that position. I don't see why we would count on him to be better than Polanco in 2022.

    I don't see how anything could be worse than Nishioka. Factor in that signing him led to the team trading JJ Hardy for Jim Hoey and the whole situation becomes a Superfund toxic waste site.

    I don't have strong feelings about Segura in particular, but I like this idea in general. Spend the big money on Buxton and pitching, get someone to stand in at SS who is plausible for a year and see where we are. Same idea as last year, hopefully with a somewhat better outcome. I would really like to have a crystal ball into Lewis' future to help make this decision. We have several good pitching prospects, we ought to be able to get one or two reasonable starters from there before too long and who knows which ones. At SS, we've got Lewis and...Palacios? I'd love to turn the job over to Lewis in April or May and hope he catches fire, but it's probably well into spring training before that's anything more than a dream that might become a nightmare.

    Interesting analysis, fun to think about. My biggest question is why Sano got a C-, but Gordon got a B-? I think that might be biased by expectations. Gordon looked better than expected, Sano a little worse. However, for who had the better year, I'd have to go with Sano. Neither one exactly blew the lights out, of course. If Gordon were a top prospect like Larnach I think his grade would have been lower.

    Jason Castro has had a couple of huge moments as well. Ryan Pressly is bored. Martin Perez and Hansel Robles, not so much. Danny Santana gets to run once in a while. Twins everywhere in Fenway.

    You didn't ask about 1994, but we sent Marty Cordova that year. He was ROY in 1995.
