It is not the same thing! When you use two roster spots to get one player's stats, you are, by definition, shortening your bench. And when those platoon player's both stink defensively (say 2B) you have the bad defense, lack of ability to hit against same handed pitching, and in the end, some truly bad baseball stemming from horrid roster construction. An old football adage says if you have a quarterback controversy, you don't have a quarterback. If you are platooning a majority of your "starters", you have a quarterback controversy. And no, this isn't a Joe Montana/Steve Young type question, but much closer to a Steve Montana/Joe Young question!

There is a shortage of quality starting pitching. There has always been. Most teams would give up anything to improve that depth. Guys with no chance of ever making it make up 90%+ of all professional ballplayers who will keep getting chances to make the leap to the next level. Guys who don't have the arsenal to start go to the bullpen. You can pretty much guarantee that those desperate teams have tried pretty much everything to make these failures (almost no one is drafted as a reliever, percentage wise) work out as they planned. Before anyone brings up Santana or Liriano beginning their MLB careers in the pen, get real! Those guys were starters, who in the parlance of the day, were getting their feet wet in the bullpen before their assumed (presumed!) move to the rotation. Neither Sands or Jax fit this mold... not even close. Want to to see just how teets-up this can go, look back at the Jeff Reardon starting experiment. Didn't go well at all... and I'd say Reardon had a much better chance to make it work. He made the majors as a (poor-ish) starter and transitioned to relief. He performed poorly in his mid career return to the rotation. Neither quality innings, nor any quantity. His return to relief didn't go well, as most thought he lost velocity and movement that simply didn't return upon his return to the bullpen.

As we used to say, Bruno had a big hose in RF. And covered ground surprisingly well - at least suprising to non-Twins fans. A good player, seemingly a good teammate, and by all accounts a decent fellow. Age has let me learn that that is a rarer combination than we like to admit!

Could he? Anything is possible... almost. But, which is more likely - your dream of him blossoming into an all-star level reliever (a job he has never done to even an acceptable level) or him pitching 50 to 75 largely ineffective innings before breaking down again I know which I hope for. I also know I'd bet the other way if forced to pick the more likely outcome.

He ain't depth, any more than I am. If you can trade him for a bag of balls, you do it. There are a slew of 5+ ERA pitchers that can be had for much less than $7.5M. If you want "depth"...

I remember him. He was worse than his numbers. I'll take Hrbek's word on his stuff, but even a decent man - and his life shows him to be so - can be a bad ball player. When his name was listed under "today's probable starters" you could safely listen to anything else, with little worry of missing anything good. Thrower not a pitcher... a good community oriented man, but bad professional baseball player. He might have been unlucky to a degree, but that was waaaaaay down the list of his baseball shortcomings.

I met Caleb at a Sioux Falls Pheasants (?) game during his MLB hiatus. He was helping out at Augustana College as a pitching coach, and player/coaching with the Pheasants (American Association). He seemed as down to Earth as any of the fans at the games, and seemed pretty darned pleased that he was blessed to be playing a game for a living 15 years after the kids he grew up with came to the end of their baseball "career". Nice guy, no ego. I can truly say I wish him the best.

What Are Your Favorite Twins Bringing For Thanksgiving?
Bodie replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sounds about par for the course. You do remember the "contributions" of most of the roster during the first month of the season??? Or the final month... -
Give me the Cleveland team over this "roster" every day of the week, and twice on Sunday! Never thought that would need to be said on a Twins fan site, but here we are...

Twins Trade Candidate Breakdown: Chris Paddack
Bodie replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Heck, why not trade me??? I have MLB value that is about equal to Paddack... Just because Minny decided to pay him exorbitant amounts to "recover" DOES NOT mean anyone else thinks he is worth anything beyond a non-guaranteed MiLB contract with a spring training invite. -
Potential doesn't necessarily mean depth. Look at a list of Twins minor league pitcher of the year. Go back a while and ask how many of those top prospects made a positive impact. Cumulatively there is about one good season of bullpen work. Cumulatively. And that is going back (but not including) Jose Berios. So while there is more to be optimistic about the future of Twins pitching, I'll not be holding my breath waiting for any of it to pan out, let alone all of them. And yes, that was and still is a VERY angry take. I didn't think last year's optimism about the pitching (for '24) was warranted in any way, esp. the bullpen. Hearing the exact same wishful thinking fuels me with the fury of white hot star. And if I hear the names Varland or Paddack as a meaningful part of the staff I will go supernova!!! Nothing is impossible, but we have a record for both of these guys, and it says you cannot count on either of these guys to provide any positive. Anything is possible, especially in baseball, but there is a difference between hopes and dreams, and an honest prediction for future performance.

A hint for any future feature writers: Just f!@#ing STOP with articles saying that the Twins have depth at pitching after seeing what starting options #3+ were 30 days ago (and still are), any blithering idiot can see that neither the rotation or bullpen is anywhere near ready for a competitive ball team. Let alone being an area of surplus.... WTF were these writers watching in September? I know for a FACT they were not seeing the boon of a "deep" pitching staff. In fact you saw a team so desperate for arms that they were scouring the DFAs. Unlike other playoff contenders, Minny was looking for arms for the next day (not a year away, reclamation project).

Defense never slumps. Defense travels. And best of all, it is relatively cheap! Bad defense will break your heart more often (and more achingly) than anything short of HORRIFIC pitching. When you regularly man three positions with borderline butchers, results such as we just saw are not surprising, but to be expected. You can't cover truly bad defense (or pitching) with an average offense, or even a good one. You need elite offense to cover being subpar in the field or on the mound. The Twins are not elite offensively (last year we had zero elite hitters, and came nowhere near an elite offense), and unless you turn out a (healthy) Mike Trout about every two years, the Twins could never afford to keep such a lineup with veterans who have the option of seeing their free agent value. Give me Steve Lombardozzi (and his glove) over a shockingly long list of currently rostered Twins!

Going to miss Maximilian. Since the Twins still haven't found a replacement for Eddie Rosario yet (at by far the easiest defensive position), I won't be holding my breath waiting for Max's replacement.
-
Well, as long as all these lousy swing choices are Bunyanesque in their effort, all will be peachy!!! Twins philosophy- You can't hit it hard without max effort swings. My philosophy- You can't hit it hard without contact. But I'm not a professional...

The only thing where you see 100% effort is with a swing.... I'd say bring back Gardenhire, but I doubt he'd want anything to do with such a collection of fundamentally BAD players. Tom Kelly might... I really don't know what he'd do - he'd be running out 5 man lineups due to his overflowing doghouse!

Edouard Julien Returns. What Can We Expect?
Bodie replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How about last season then? He was below average (some would just say bad, me included) everywhere he played. No "statistics" can make it otherwise. That said, nothing says he can't improve in the field (playing a regular position would help simply due to repetition). Jeffers wasn't simply below average his first season, he was utterly overmatched - a true emergency catcher. He has worked hard and improved significantly. No real reason that Julien can't do something along those lines. An average defensive 2B who hits .280 will have a career as long as the body holds up! -
How many years have we (basically all non-Cleveland fans) said Cleveland "ain't as good as their record"? The time has long passed to give up this trope and accept that Cleveland puts a very good team on the field, and if you are waiting for them to come back to earth, you are likely to be disappointed. Either that Fracona magic is so strong he need not even be around, or maybe the Spiders have a pretty good model for putting team on the field year after year. You need to beat them, they won't do it for you!

The Twins Should Trade Alex Kirilloff to the Angels

The Angels aren't the best run team, but they aren't braindead. Not completely anyway...
