  1. You haven't got the message? There is now one official way to skin the cat. And it means HOFer Boggs sucked because he didn't homer or K enough. Gold Glove be damned! Batting titles are for old fogies, and idiots. Personally, I ignored said memo and regularly cite him as an example of the idiocy of reliance on analytics. How many of his "Boggs hole" singles would have never made it to the outfield wall if left alone??? He didn't care if it was a bullet or a dying quail as long as it hit the field before leather.
  2. Or, look to the booth (occasionally) to get yourself some LaTroy Hawkins. Bad starter, ergo untrustworthy to the be a closer (even if young Hawk probably had the "stuff" to be an elite closer) when first moved to the BP. By default he was a long reliever. And he resurrected (maybe just surected, as he never had ML success over any length of time) his career, building trust (mostly by being more effective) until he was trusted as a late inning reliever. For 20 years (pretty sure he hit that mark... could be wrong). Not a bad go of it for a guy who had an inauspicious start.
  3. Easier to believe if you think "Rocco" is spelled r-o-c-k-h-e-a-d, but yeah...
  4. Probably just that! The same way I have always said Eddie Julien has never looked like a MLB player... Though the call on EJ was a much easier call! Some guys just look like they don't and won't cut it. Now, or in the future. Pretty simple concept!
  5. Makes more sense to me if you keep Varland out of the discussion.... Using Varland's performance to justify this is inane! We know what to expect from Varland, just not the when.
  6. MLB play is at a level that no one will be successful playing at less than max effort. Any retired player will tell you exactly that. Current ones are too scared of being labeled trouble maker to tell the truth! 90% effort to save your "health points" not only leaves you with almost no production, but in the end a beat up player hated by his teams fan base because he dogs it. It ain't a video game -,it is elite athletes going all out in a dog eat dog world. Play at less than max effort and some kid will be along shortly to take your job. And on a competently run team it will be very soon!
  7. Whe your "prime" is more or less a 2 week hitting streak (preceded and succeeded.by awful all-around play) maybe it is time to move on... which is more than can be said about EJ.
  8. Based on what we've seen, that isn't even a consideration. Thankfully!
  9. Methinks that FlyingFinn has far too much time on his hands... hope you used some of it to catch last night's game. I fell asleep at 4-1, with a fresh pot of coffees. Woke up at 3am to good Twins news, but at 3am!
  10. Who really wants another team's manager messing with the timing of their pitchers' schedule? Truly a wonder that anyone allows SPs to go to the ASG! Litlle birdie tells me Kyle Gibson will be the Devil Dogs' representative... Go Tampa! Also, count on Buxton getting his near annual mid season break - IL centered around the ASG - allowing him a short two week vacation while only missing a week of work.
  11. If you can't run the bases due to injury, or the after affects, you belong on the DL. He isn't filling a Jim Thome role, he is supposedly an everyday player. If he is not an everyday player, trade him before everyone finds out he isn’t. This team, as currently constructed, cannot afford to have a plow horse slow DH/PH who cannot attempt to run all out - at least to save an out.
  12. The vase (pronounced "vaaz", please) on my mantle is fragile. If I knock it down it'll break. Stewart doesn't need to be knocked down... enjoy him while you can!
  13. You have just summed up "analytics" vs. "scouting". He wasn't "good" (on the Pablo scale), but "good enough". Everyone wants to be good, but the winners are always good enough.
  14. Don't know that "regression" is the word I'd use. His ERA is fine, especially for the 3 or 4 guy out of the pen (which he is - Duran, Jax [eek!] and Columbe are undoubtedly ahead of him). He also allows far too many inherited runners to score. Even if he allowed every one to score, he could theoretically have a zero ERA. The runs are on the board, but his main stats are still quite nice. I'd try to get him in at the start of an inning, or at least with bases empty. Good to very good in his "expected" role (3rd or 4th reliever) but as a closer he'd be a paid endorser for Tums/Mylanta/Pepto Bismol.
  15. Grade on Rocco for the streak: 85-90% as awful as he was 3 weeks ago. Small helping of crow...
  16. (Wish I could quote a part instead of the whole...) "...but doesn't seem to have any answers when the lows come in..." Fixed that for ya'!
  17. Tonkin to 60-day dl. Eligible to come off 60 day in May if I remember correctly.
  18. Sano has the edge, just a huge arm. My wish is to see Sano throwin... pitching at Joey Whose Name We Shall Not Be Named. Velo > control = HBP (And repeat because that ain't 3 true outcomes)
  19. Remember listening to game 7 of the '87 series. KGLO out of Mason City, Couldn't even come close to getting reception in the yard (electrical lines overhead + AM radio don't mix!) and I wasn't going to miss a second of the game. Kept driving in a 6 mile loop on gravel roads in my '68 Dodge. Until the gas ran out. Didn't start hiking for gas until the TWINS WERE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS. Was a pretty happy 17 year old.... almost as happy as I was about 4 years later as my birthday present was a pair of game 7 tickets on my 21st birthday. Thousands of hours of listening to Herb &Co. Wouldn't trade a second of it!
  20. C'mon, man! This is MLBaseball! The Yankees will always get thier man. And Kansas City's!
