  1. Outman: everything you want in a ballplayer but the bat. Unfortunately for him, baseball uses said bat regularly. Unfortunately for the Twins and their fans, he regularly uses his bat. Anything above the Mendoza line would likely give him a surprisingly long (measured in months/years vs. days/months) ML career with his good D, very good speed and seemingly inoffensive demeanor in the clubhouse (he does seem to have fans and friends in the dugout). A pretty low bar. And it is a bar that he bangs into head-first every year since his rookie season. Where have you gone Bush and Lombardozi (sp?)? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you!
  2. And people think I'm hard on Minnesota's favorite son... But,!,!,! Someone has quietly pulled Wall-e aside to explain he is no longer allowed to challenge, right? RIGHT?? RIGHT???
  3. It is nice to look today's (whatever day) starting pitching and not know that opposing starter doesn't have a one in three or four shot at having his best start of the season against Minny. Good starter or bad (especially the bad), they likely left the game with a season high in Ks and innings because the Twins made (seemingly) no effort, and surely no adjustments. Regularly. 12 Ks and 7 innings with 2 hits. 10 Ks in 5 with a single hit (who was thrown out trying to stretch out a double) by someone whose major league career lasted another week. It was a problem. With the lineup that day. With the manager refusing to peep out from behind his spreadsheet to see how his ball team was playing. A front office who who put together a roster that was laughably poorly constructed. Utter system failure! It was why the Twins had such a white-trash methhead of a garage sale late last summer. ("Brand new microwave, still in the box! What'll'ya give me? No, not stolen. It was a wedding present, don't tell my wife!" kinda crap)
  4. If I remember correctly, yes,it was Ted Williams #1, Carew #2 and somebody named Ruth #3 (he had some pretty wild numbers!). What was interesting to me was the old guys (say pre-1920), "Power" guys who got to double digit home runs with batting averages around .400 and Pucket-esque double and triple numbers. And did it for years. Lots of names for fans of the true old timers.
  5. I'm too young to have seen "prime" Oliva (born 1970). I do remember my 1st game at the Met, and my mom explaining that his story was among the saddest in baseball, due to the devastating results of his injuries. Ever the optimist Oliva would have disagreed, but she had a point.
  6. Harper and 16 Ks on the season... Averages out to one strike out every 10 games. Half the current roster will be pushing that number (16) in any 10 game stretch!
  7. Curious as to who among this "major surplus of OFs", considering that we have exactly 1.5 competent- by today's Twins standards- outfielders, is going to bring in a quality major league arm??? Wallner? Larnach? Both qualify as "surplus" (in my book), but wouldn't even bring back a a Banda 2.0. Maybe combined, but... then you roster one of the next 3-4 DFAs. Going to scrape the high minors for an arm? Great! It does leave open the question of where we get our (much needed) near-immediate replacements for the aforementioned W&L. To me, talk of "surplus" OFs is a little like bragging about your septic tank being almost full... it isn't good.
  8. How 'bout after 3-4 starts against the same team... How well will hitters see his pitches when they've seen him 10+ at bats? Will it be Ryan-esque and seemingly not matter how many times the see him, or Ober-esque and hitters adjust and crush? Think he might have better raw stuff than both of those two combined. Now the question transforms to "Do we have a pitcher or a belly itcher?".
  9. I read a book years ago by an MIT statistics professor who "normalized" hitting statistics to (ideally) make cross-era comparisons easy. Can't remember the name of the author, but the line "we saw the second greatest hitter of all time retire less than a year ago", in reference to Carew, has always stuck with me.
  10. Glad to see Lee show... well, anything positive! Botching everyday plays in the field, and showing nothing at the plate to start the week, he is at least ended the week showing professional possibilities. He doesn't need to be Correa, but Rafael Mendoza without a glove just ain't going to cut it.
  11. If those are choices, it is a no brainer. No discussion, no debate. Only one has shown for even a short period to be a MLer. Double-A is full of live arms that can't pitch... heck, so are both levels of A ball!
  12. ^^^This! Add in the fact that everyone who goes 6 innings is universally hailed in the clubhouse and the manager's office as if they ran a THREE minute mile. It isn't impressive, and it sure as heck is not a recipe for success. Especially with this Twins' bullpen. The real question is where on this roster do you see any length? Ryan is healing up and has a history of missing short periods late in the year. His 176 innings was a career high and is not going to be passed this year. No Lopez and his innings, but Ober and his history of no innings. Bradley and Abel having their best month of thier career will each go <5 innings regularly because of thier inability (so far in thier careers) to pitch efficiently for any stretch. I don't expect everyone to go 7-8-9 innings every forth day. But I want to scream when I hear Ryan, being interviewed midgame (another topic), and being at all satisfied with going 6 innings. Who the fu... thinks the third guy (9th inning guy, 8th inning guy, and finally the 7th inning guy who should probably feel lucky to have a rister spot in StP) out of the Twins bullpen gives you a better chance to win ??? I understand in this specific case Ryan is still "ramping it up", but I'll sure as shi... be able to cut and paste this exact post in August. And Ryan is the "best" case on this roster! If no one expects more than mediocrity, don't be surprised when that is the best you get. Grumpy old man out!
  13. I'd change "save" (sic) to "passive", but agree 100% with the sentiment. Lot easier to root for a guy going all out, even if it doesn't always work out. His talent level means he is likely to be a relatively short term Twin, but I'll appreciate all he has done with what he has, as long as he's here. A "dirtbag" in every (baseball) sense! Give him anyone's glove, and a random bat and turn him lose!!!
  14. Almost impossible to believe this crisp, clean game was played by the same team that was supposedly in KC last night for a game... Almost enough to give a man hope. Almost.
  15. Nice to see... Hustle, highlighted by Buxton. Sac fly by Bell. He needs to be an RBI guy, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Power, in this case Lewis. We know he can hit them, it'd be nice to actually see it semi regularly. Solid defense and pitching. Never hurts! Good job Taj - show that you'll battle and you'll get a bit more leeway when things aren't ideal.
  16. Especially considering Jenkins was rated as a number 1 pick largely due to his bat. 60 sounds low, but how much of his glowing prospect status has been lost due to injury? Originally a "can't miss" prospect, his path to a "never was" is perfectly clear to see if he can't stay healthy. And with the Twins' history, it feels increasingly likely every year. Here's to Jenkins hitting the road running about May 1 and putting his injuries behind him!!!
  17. Watched the game, and Bowman specifically asked to pitch in the game after triggering the option. Not sure what that portends, but he obviously wants to play for someone - that, in and of itself, recommends him over about 2/3rds of last years roster!
  18. Glad to see someone seize the opportunity! In 50 years as a Twins fan, I've seen far too many guys "just not lose a spot" in spring training, and spend the season showing they sure as he... didn't earn it, let alone deserve to keep it! Congratulations Mick Abel!!! Now go out there and prove you belong.
