  1. Couldn't agree more with this. It seems to me you're saying the Mgr needs to fit his mentality around the players he has instead of the players need to change their mentality to what the Mgr wants. This isn't related to your comment but to the story regarding Mauer: "his one notable limitation was a lack of consistent home run production". Mauer had one more limitation. Pulling the ball. I don't know the stats but I'd bet 80% of his pulls were nothing more than a rolling 4-3 put out. Walker will need to learn how to turn on a ball.
  2. Unless Cease get's hit contract extended I'm not big on any of the trades. Although, if there were more Julien level players included I'd be more willing to listen.
  3. They should always be trying to improve the SP. But don't sell the farm for a one year rental. Unless it's Jack Morris, then get him for one year and get your lawn chairs ready for the parade in November. Yes, I know we didn't trade for Morris.
  4. Two WS championship teams. Both of those had three RH hitting outfielder that started a majority of the games. They faced RH pitching a majority of the time. Rocco can change his game a little to the roster that he has (he most likely won't cuz he's not good) and the two similar outfielders should work their arse off to identify pitches coming out of the hands of LH pitchers.
  5. Work on his body? Absolutely. I'm all for building muscle, but every other day should be leg day. I remember in my days of yore that starting pitchers would go into the clubhouse and hit the stationary bike after the game. The pitchers that did that were the HOF type guys, not the guys who could barely finish five innings.
  6. I hope Carlos is walking around barefoot to build up some foot strength. Maybe ditch the shoes he's been wearing might help.
  7. With all the budget cutting I'm surprised the Twins gave the draftees jerseys. I figured they'd get leftover replica Mauer replica tee shirts instead.
  8. I'm not too worried about trades at this point. Yes, there was a colossal choke. A historic choke. A "my eyes are burning by seeing what I just saw" choke, but, it doesn't mean the team doesn't have talent. The choke means the team was in first place, and lost it. Generally speaking, a first place team has talent, and this one does. There are plenty of players (we know who they are) that are all star caliber and need to play an entire season to prevent another choke. Additionally, in 87 the Twins didn't trade for Reardon until February and didn't get Gladden until right before the season was underway.
  9. You have starters and you have backups. The starters should be playing 140+ games. It's not that difficult to slip a backup into the lineup a couple of times a week if they can play multiple positions.
  10. Perkins and Goltz. Better than decent numbers and were here for more than a couple/few years.
  11. This! is the move Twins fans were waiting for. If only they would have gotten him at the trade deadline. Drat!
  12. He's averaged around 80 runs per year for the past three seasons. That's just under .5 run per each hit. It is difficult to put a few hits together but even more so when you have a team that tends to strike out over a third of the time. I don't have the stats to back it up, but I'd wager a pitchers BA against is higher with runners on base, even if he isn't speedy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the long ball, but you don't need to lead the league in K's to hit a bunch of HR's.
  13. The Pohlad's have to know that selling a winner is easier than selling a scrap heap. I wouldn't be surprised if they make a moderate splash in free agency. If not that, a trade that most people wouldn't expect.
  14. I'm disagreeing with any of that. The greater point is I'd rather have someone with a greater chance to get a base hit than a K. The team with the horrible M logo seem to prefer the slow walk back to the dugout.
  15. Low contact rate v. no contact rate. I'd rather watch 9 guys slap singles and doubles around the field than watch over a third of the outs being strikeouts. Having a guy on base consistently changes things for the pitcher. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure a guy from St. Paul (except one exceptional season), made the H.O.F by slapping singles and doubles to the opposite field. And yes, I know, defense also factored in.
  16. I'm pretty sure it was Tom Kelly that said it took centerfielders, more specifically the faster players, a longer time to develop.
  17. I will join the Boomers and walk away from baseball completely if this happens. The boomers tell me shuffleboard is quite exciting and fast paced.
  18. It was more of a rip on the manager than comparing stats. I should have been more clear. On a side note, what goes on between the ears doesn't matter with the guys in charge. Starters get yanked once they get to the third time through the lineup. Guys like Jack Morris and Jim Kaat would never complete a game regardless of how tenacious or intelligent they are.
  19. The way the Twins handle pitchers it's not like he's going to get many more innings. Five innings a week as a starter or four innings as a reliever. If the guy can start, let him start.
  20. "Ober offers pinpoint control and an uncanny ability to suppress hard contact" For us gray in the beard folk, we called this "Pitching".
