  1. Willi is going to play for sure. Hopefully he can keep up with last year's output. But, this article reinforced the need for that righty OF bat. Maybe they're giving Martin spring training to prove it. But, I still like MAT and some of the ither discussed options.
  2. He seems like a good guy, with all the ability in the world. I'd be happy if it worked out like you say, but it would be startling if he could strong together a decade of healthy, productive seasons after what his body has already been through.
  3. I like this batting style more than the Gabby one (prospect 3.5). I'm glad Julien had a successful year and can serve as a good template for.selective aggression. Fingers crossed, but it'll be interesting regardless.
  4. I think he's ready for a look, and I'm tired of waiting to see what he is. From his numbers and fielding ability, I don't get the impression he'll struggle in MLB. He may not thrive, but certainly could. He needs ABs.
  5. I tend to think Gordon, Bubba or Duarte are cut. I'd start with Duarte. I like adding a new all slider guy. The bullpen could show a ton of different looks, which would be fun.
  6. I love how he takes at bats and I'm glad to not have another K machine. I'm not sure what he has left, so I hope their assessments are correct. Sad to see Miranda is likely still hurt and not in this year's plans. Feel bad for the guy.
  7. Our pitching development group has been great at tweaking guys to get the most out of them. I'm curious to see what they can do with someone who has most of what you scout for, but little experience. System aside, wishing Charlee the best as year one starts for him.
  8. Good write up, and he sounds like a tremendous athlete. Hopefully professional coaching can help him with the K rate.
  9. If they get a good start it could be interesting. Young teams that seem a year away have a way of jump starting a winning cycle. On paper, I like the Twins, but the FO's complacency is practically begging for us to get ambushed by a young, upstart team.
  10. The names mentioned in the article are not if the caliber of Duran - Littel and Lopez are nice, but not at the same level. Also, Little and Lopez were put in the bullpen because they were failed starters. Duran is in the bullpen to combat injury concerns. It's just a different discussion. The risk/reward is greater with a better pitcher. We could see how it works with Hicks, who is a closer comp. But I still don't think this type of risk is worth it for a team that isn't willing to spend and has such a low margin for error.
  11. If you can't spend on salaries, which the Twins apparently cannot, you keep both. If you can get a good, young pitcher built around a package for one, you consider it. If you have to trade one, you trade Lee because Julien is too good of a hitter. Well-rounded players are great, and my preference typically, but you can hide Julien's bat at second and with the way the game is currently played, it won't kill you. Every year, I look at Philly and their softball style team and think they have no chance, but they have top level starters, bats and a reasonable bullpen, and do well in the playoffs. I hate the plan, but it works.
  12. Thanks for including the Frank Robinson story here. Somehow that one sticks with me as a piece of evidence for how much these guys work and how much happens behind the scenes, in the clubhouse. It startling watching a legend like Robinson break down over a decision about a backup catcher.
  13. I'm not seeing it. I feel like Farmer is a good fit for the Mets, who just lost a key middle infielder. And SWR should be worth more than just a part of a trade for a 4th outfielder. I do like the idea of leveling up to a solid 4th OF, like Michael A, but this costs too much for me.
  14. Power is great, but I think the best version of Martin adds a dimension to the lineup. Rather than rolling out another swing for the fences type, Martin would diversify the lineup's batting approach and challenge a starter to pitch differently. I really hope he is given a solid shot and can run with it.
  15. Unless I misunderstand what they mean by back end of the rotation, I think this step is a waste of time. Couldn't we just plug SWR in there as an innings eater with some upside? Are we projected to be short on innings at both AAA and the MLB level? Why use valuable time, at the start of a rough off-season, on a fifth starter?
  16. We need to clear salary and Kepler is at his peak value. He's a nice player, but I don't expect the same resuls next year - meaning a potential drop in production while saving $10 million is palatable. Launch, Martin or any of the IF surplus can cover left. And I would rather hold on to Polianci than Kepler, if we are focused on winning this year. He's a more consistent and better bat with decent defense.
  17. The Twins pursued Pablo for years. They obviously knew him well. They even had a plan to unlock the next level for him. To Pablo's credit, he was able to take it on, including adding a sweeper and using it immediately. I'm curious who else they're following closely. Based on stats, Sandoval looks like a solid comparison. I'd just caution that some of the things that make Pablo who he is do not show up so obviously in the stat line.
  18. If Chase Petty brings back Sonny Gray, it would take an awful lot for me to trade ERod. You cannot trade guys with his tools that are under 21 unless you're blown away by an offer.
  19. Great article! I was thinking about this similarly just this morning. And I agree with the overall assessment. Julien, Correa, Royce, and Polo were the only batters who seemed to have a level comfort or even a plan when batting in a pressure situation against playoff-caliber pitching. And, of that group, even Lewis (who had serious success) seemed to press often, as we got closer to elimination. For me, the key would be another guy or two who could read the situation and take an at-bat based on it. That could mean taking pitches, not guessing, not swinging for the fences, going with the pitch, reading how they are attacking you, or being aggressive early in the count. Any combo of the above applies pressure to the other team and the pitcher. There just seemed to be too much swinging and hoping for fastball or just swinging and reacting to the pitch. No plan. The article rightly notes that Kepler got screwed on a handful of calls. That was brutal, But, from watching those games and his lack of a real approach, I think we can say he is not a cleanup hitter on a playoff team with serious aspirations. As a 6 or 7, great. But, in my opinion, we could use either use a true lefty cleanup hitter (they don't grow on trees) to slot between a healthy Buxton and Correa, or another leadoff hitter (OBP), which would allow Julien to fall back to that spot.
  20. I know the Twins eta if hitting the other way got worn out, b7t I wouldn't mind someone beyond Julien, Polo, or Solano considering it. Great season. Bright future. Still feeling some pain from last night.
  21. He's who you want in there to close it. Unfortunately, you can't be a lockdown playoff reliever without playoff experience. Hopefully his first test is at Target Field, against an overmatched opponent, goes well and we can put the worrying to bed. And if Rocco brings him in mid-inning, for his first playoff outing, we smash our TVs.
  22. Their starters may not be on top of their game, but dealing with Framber and Verlander as 1 and 2 would not be ideal. The likelihood of facing a HOFer down 0-1 would give me some pause. But, it's the playoffs, nobody will be a cake walk.
  23. So much for the value of a bench coach with manager experience. He didn't talk to Royce himself or send someone to talk to him after he gingerly returns to the dugout, during a meaningless game. It's literally his one job while Rocco is on leave.
  24. The bullpen was ugly, but I have to ask, will Jordan Luplow be batting third in the playoffs against lefties? Platoon splits are worth exploiting, but that lineup decision scares me.
