    Here is my take: the Twins have a lot of guys they have invested in, besides Romero. Stewart, Gonsalves, Mejia, plus others mentioned in this thread. Give them a shot. Good bullpen guys happen that way - who ever thought Ryan Pressly or Taylor Rogers were top notch until given the chance?

    I would rather see the Twins go full "lumber company" and keep Austin instead of Ehire. This guy has big time power. As a bench bat or sub, that appeals to me more than glove. With Marwin in the fold, and perhaps Tortuga, go all in on offense is a good play for this team.

    Interesting read Parker - I can't think of a better use of team resources than player development, an area which has been kind of spotty for the Twins over the years. Hopefully it will bear fruit in the long term.

    Everything I'm seeing and reading on sites that are not Twins Daily think the Twins did quite well with this signing: I think I agree. Marwin is a pretty cool name as well.

    There are a number of names on the top 20 that reflect the new management's creativity in acquiring young talent: Severino: scoop up when others mess up. Enlow: work the bonus pool to get guys on day 2 that were otherwise college bound. Duran, Celestino, Alcala, Littel: good return at trade deadline. I think the farm will be rich as long as these guys are in charge. Hitting on your first 2 drafts doesn't hurt either.

    Charisma, joy, and love of the game make me think of a couple bald Gold-Glove Twin center fielders of yesteryear.

    This is the smart way to spend money - get guys on the way up for pennies on the dollar compared to big name free agents. 5 years of Kepler > 1 year of Harper, and >> than your average 30 year old 20 million dollar free agent.

    This is kind of a fun article to look at with respect to this thread, a review of the 2014 international signings class. Huascar Ynoa was the big fish, signed for 800K. The only thing exceptional about Graterol was that he barely made the age cut-off at 16. Seth asked the question whether it was better to go all in on one player for 3 million or get a bunch of players at 100K. Well, Graterol cost 150K.     If I were in charge, I'd hand him a standard contract with the years and dollars blank and ask him to fill it out to his liking and return it by the end of the day.

    People often point to Hicks as the comp, and perhaps correctly so. But it took him until 27 to become a solid player. Torii Hunter didn't light anything up until his age 25 season, then kaboom. Would much prefer to see Buxton follow 48's path.

    I remember following him as a prospect and thinking his name was pronounced CUD-dee-er. It wasn't until I heard Herb Carneal say Cu-DYE-er that I learned the true pronunciation. I was way more wrong with Mientkiewicz....

    Maybe Reed can be the guy this year, but I like a veteran closer style guy in the pen to act as a stabilizer, mentor. I really think they can help. With Eddy Guardado gone, and Jeremy Hefner in his place, who never had a single MLB save, where are those words of wisdom gonna come from to a guy like May, or Curtiss? Reed or bust?(he does have 125 career saves). I do like the thought of Cody Allen on the Twins. Like Lebowski's rug, he could really hold the pen together.

    That's why I like the idea of salary and contract flexibility - some see it as lack of sustainability or something, but being free of anchor contracts makes an organization limber and able to adapt to changing times, kind of like we are seeing now. The UFA market isn't what it used to be. I know, there is no salary cap in baseball, and the owners are obscenely wealthy, etc. However: Risky contracts for the hell of it are opportunity cost. IMHO, Falvine are proceeding appropriately, given the unknowns on the Twins roster. I wouldn't go all in after a losing season and unloading a contract like Mauer's just yet. If Buxton and Sano fulfill some of their potential, and they post a winning record in 2019, they will be in excellent position to add pieces for a push in 2020. "We shoulda signed so and so" ignores the fact that the Twins are 1 of 30 teams, all equally motivated, and all in the same business of winning ballgames.

    If the Twins don't keep Astudillo around, I hope some other team will grab him. Good ballplayer, and natural showman that belongs in MLB.

    Larnach vs. Rooker: I think Larnach the much better prospect. a. he is a better hitter for average b. probably better in the field c. much better bb/k ratio d. power is a wash. Mr. Larnach is getting short-changed here.

    If only Norway and Sweden started developing stud ballplayers. As much lutefisk, pickled herring and Swedish meatballs as you want....

    La Tortuga packed a whole season's worth of thrills into his brief time with the Twins. Hoping for an extended encore in 2019.

    I personally hate the tradition of retiring numbers. Worst case scenario: Montreal Canadiens. They have retired 1,2,3,4,5,7,9,10,12,16,18,19,23,29,33. Dickie Moore and Elmer Each anyone? Having your name on a wall of honor is enough. How many numbers have Real Madrid or Manchester United retired? Zero. It isn't the number, it's the player.

    Between Mejía and Romero, I think the Twins have a back of the rotation guy and a swingman at least as good as these options, potentially much better. Get some bullpen help first. Who is gonna close for this team? On a side note, I am more interested in seeing if Stewart can repeat his modest success of last year, or if Gonsalves can figure out MLB hitters, than buying damaged goods or yesterday's stars. If I were Falvine I would wager one or two of our AAA guys at the cusp are MLB worthy.

    And the ever present question...why would he come to this team? Money is not a consideration for him. Winning is. Top end free agents are rich beyond belief. They want rings, honors. People alway look at deals in retrospect and say, "why didn't we do that?" Well, the Twins are 3% of all the MLB teams. Other teams are trying just as hard. Free agents are looking at more than "pay me biggest money ever." And other organizations have tempting prospects as well, who sometimes match up better in trades. Tunnelvision....

    The Twins new right side of the infield hit over 50 HR last season. 12 million outlaid, and the defense is at least average. Mmmkay. You gotta put a team on the field. Don't get the hate for the 1 year deal - as Dozier showed us the last couple seasons, 2nd basemen are a dime a dozen. Short term seems like the better play to me - Buxton, Sano, catcher, bullpen, even Kepler and the back-end of the rotation are all ??? at this point. The elite prospects are still a year away at least. Berrios, Rosario, + ? See if we have a core to build from and proceed. Not a lot of proven track record out there. At the least, they've gotten younger and likely hungrier.
