  1. Between Mejía and Romero, I think the Twins have a back of the rotation guy and a swingman at least as good as these options, potentially much better. Get some bullpen help first. Who is gonna close for this team? On a side note, I am more interested in seeing if Stewart can repeat his modest success of last year, or if Gonsalves can figure out MLB hitters, than buying damaged goods or yesterday's stars. If I were Falvine I would wager one or two of our AAA guys at the cusp are MLB worthy.
  2. And the ever present question...why would he come to this team? Money is not a consideration for him. Winning is. Top end free agents are rich beyond belief. They want rings, honors. People alway look at deals in retrospect and say, "why didn't we do that?" Well, the Twins are 3% of all the MLB teams. Other teams are trying just as hard. Free agents are looking at more than "pay me biggest money ever." And other organizations have tempting prospects as well, who sometimes match up better in trades. Tunnelvision....
  3. The Twins new right side of the infield hit over 50 HR last season. 12 million outlaid, and the defense is at least average. Mmmkay. You gotta put a team on the field. Don't get the hate for the 1 year deal - as Dozier showed us the last couple seasons, 2nd basemen are a dime a dozen. Short term seems like the better play to me - Buxton, Sano, catcher, bullpen, even Kepler and the back-end of the rotation are all ??? at this point. The elite prospects are still a year away at least. Berrios, Rosario, + ? See if we have a core to build from and proceed. Not a lot of proven track record out there. At the least, they've gotten younger and likely hungrier.
  4. When Sano, Buxton, Dozier, and Morrison have historically bad seasons, and your ace and starting catcher lose the season to injuries, and your starting shortstop gets busted for PEDs, I'm not sure the front office is to blame. They made an honest effort to improve a playoff team: as nicksaviking pointed out, they signed the #9, #15, #16 and #49 free agents last year. They were also players on Darvish and Ohtani. It didn't work out, but I'm not gonna blame the front office for not trying.
  5. The most intriguing stat from Astudillo this winter, besides the .909 ops. 2 stolen bases in 3 attempts.
  6. One outcome I am hoping for with all the changes is that the Twins will play a fundamentally sound game, and take more from other teams than they give away. I hate sloppy, lackadaisical baseball.
  7. Love this new staff - mainly for this: they aren't gonna drive old school @#$% down the throats of young players, but grow with them. I don't expects a lot of big name FA adds of veteran players(unless they are that Thome kind of teammate). This is a quiet rebuild IMO, with lots of emphasis on development, and maximizing existing assets.
  8. Brave new world. Isn’t this what most folks wanted, as opposed to the old school?
  9. Fal-vine were brought in to bring fresh ideas - they've dusted off the moldy old cupboards and brought in something fresh. Some of us wanted management that could relate to younger players, and I expect that will happen. I appreciate the consistency of their actions now they have been given free reign.
  10. Could Joe Mauer and Tony Oliva be more similar? Some dumbfounding similarities in their career numbers: •15 year careers with the Twins and only the Twins. •3 batting titles each. •Surefire HOF careers derailed by devastating injuries. .306 career BA for Mauer, .304 for Oliva. •923 career RBI for Mauer, 947 for Oliva. •.830 career OPS for Oliva, .827 for Mauer. •Oliva wins on HR, 220-143, and All Stars, 8-6. •Mauer wins on hits, 2123 to 1917, and WAR, 55 to 43 •I mean, really, one wore 6, the other 7. Entirely different stories, but two of the best to wear the uni, regardless of what Cooperstown may think: and top-class acts to boot. Hope Joe will still be getting in on the act the way Tony does at 80, 40 years from now.
  11. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?y=2018&t=t_ibp&cid=534&stn=true&sid=t534 Rochester Red Wings 2018 stats. Take out Buxton, Grossman, Cave Lemarre, Field, i.e. the usual suspects, not much to be excited about. LeMarre is gone, hopefully Field and Grossman as well, although the latter has some small value as a proven commodity. Buxton is ??? Wade took a step backwards, then who is left? Granite? Hazelbaker.? Yikes. In Rosario, Buxton, & Kepler we hope, with Cave as 4th. But you gotta have better options in AAA. Reed is fast and hit well last season, and has had several sniffs of the majors as a 25 year old. He also appears to have a good eye at the plate as well. He's at least the prospect Wade is if not more.
  12. Was always a fan of Chuck Nagy on the hill - he was a battler, got hit around a lot, but dug in his heels the found success more often than not. Kind of Cleveland's version of Brad Radke.
  13. If the Falvine do something like this plan, and Sanó and Buxton flail away again this year, torches and pitchforks. You gotta have a plan B, C, etc. This coming from the eternal optimist.
  14. Hey Vanimal, I think your bang on the buck for Jones and McCutchen would be limited. Guys on the wrong side of 30, used to commanding salaries of 14-18 million per, and in steady statistical decline. Jones was only 0.2 WAR last season. Rosario, a healthy reinvigorated BB, and around the corner Max is my wish list. Reed falls in after Cave, maybe alongside Wade in the pecking order. Depth is good.

  16. Mimicking another's recipe for success sounds like a recipe for failure to me. The Twins need to find their own recipe that matches their situation and personnel.
  17. Mr. Hyde. Umpires would hate arguing with that guy.
  18. That is a bit of an exaggeration there nick - they went overboard on relievers exactly once, the year before. Hardly a history.
  19. Anyone who says Jay was a mistake from head to toe in hindsight has a short memory. He was an expected pick:
  20. The Twins seem to be caught between two worlds in that spectrum. However, the new regime seems to have done better than average in the draft. Hoping they continue to put their energies that way.
