    Hard no across the board. By definition guys that become free agents in their early thirties are ripe for a decline. You got 6 cheap years from them including their prime. If you really want to make them the QO otherwise you take your bargain and move on. It’s actually a benefit of drafting mostly college players - they don’t hit free agency until you don’t want them anymore.

    I think players having a full healthy off season to train is a big deal. It seems like guys who don’t get that because they are recovering from injury / surgery seem to get hurt more often the next year. I’m hopeful that Buck is entering a new phase of health. Finding the Plica problem with his knee seems to have really helped and now he has a fully built up body from the off season. Back stuff - who knows? Stewart with a shoulder surgery is never a good sign. I would be shocked if they got any meaningful innings from him.

    It’s been painfully clear that the veterans will play regardless of performance. And I wouldn’t really care if the veterans were upper end players but they never have been. At some point the difference in performance between the scrap heap veteran and the AAA young player is negligible.

    Another bat first guy that’s really going to have to hit to ever make the bigs. Based on other reports I’ve read he’s really close to being a DH

    Just a really bad idea. Willis greatest value is plugging all the holes of this oft injured and inconsistent lineup.

    Ok hissy fit alert. I do not want to read about how our FO “prides itself on finding creative solutions”. Waiting around every year so you can sign some decline phase vet for peanuts is hardly creative. In fact it’s the opposite of creative. It’s all the more maddening because we can’t develop our own prospects to be difference makers so you end up with…..average. Let’s add Canha and go get those 82 wins.

    Some of it is decision making. If you judge that you can catch the ball then you want to take the most direct route. If you can’t then you want to position yourself for making the throw. Mixing up the two is a problem ala Jake Cave. It’s easy to say that Buxton is a great fielder because he is fast (and he is). His real genius is getting great jumps and knowing exactly where the ball is going and taking the proper route to the ball. He rarely misses-judges whether he can catch the ball or not. Wallner isn’t great at any of this. While we all hope that RF will suit him better he has logged a lot of innings in the outfield in the minors so he kind of is what he is.

    I came here to say that I think projection systems are bunk and then they predicted the 86.5 wins which is where I think the Twins will end up. Damn.

    This was interesting. It brings me back to my basic beef with framing as a metric. It’s a real thing but it can’t be accurately quantified.

    I would do that deal. Have no idea how realistic it is but I would be comfortable losing those players for a year of Cease.

    I’m with you that Ryan or Ober is a non- starter - I mean hang up the phone non- starter. I’m not even sure I would give up 5 years of SWR for one year of Cease but I’m a little higher on him than most.

    It was always a source of great amusement to watch Gardys reactions to the stuff GoGo would do. Drove him nuts.

    Ooooh….if they could get Tork for Julien they should do it in a New York minute. Not happening though.

    It was well worth the attempt. If Martin had been able to add more power his hitting profile would have changed dramatically. Pitchers would have to pitch him more carefully which in turn would likely mean more walks and a higher OBP. With no power big league pitchers go right after him as they are relatively safe to do so. This means fewer walks and a lower OBP which is really what he needs to bring to the table.

    The Twins threw Nick Gordon in CF a couple years ago and he had never played the outfield in his life. He did better than Martin. Posters keep referring to his “tools” and “athleticism “. What am I missing? He has a poor arm, average ish speed and no power. Those are his tools.

    I think people (including Twins staff) look at him and see what they think he should be not what he actually is. He has a sub-par arm, gets bad jumps and takes poor routes to the ball. He has decent speed but poor instincts on the bases. At the plate he is going to have to hit for a really high average because he has no power and big league pitchers aren’t going to walk the guy. Can he get better? Sure and he probably will but he has a long ways to go to sustain a big league career. One thing I’ve been concerned about in the Falvey regime is player evaluation. They seem to miss a lot and Martin is another head scratcher.

    Even more concerning, I recall FO types saying that he was already a mlb ready outfielder. This was when he was still getting reps at SS. That is some seriously poor player evaluation as he is not close to that. If you want him to be at least average somewhere it has to be 2b or left field. His arm is just not good enough to be decent in CF or any other infield spot.

    Best one yet. All of the guests were great and I loved the nitty gritty inside baseball discussions. Of particular interest was Jeffers basically saying that framing is a thing but really can’t be measured accurately. SWR seemed very personable and intelligent about his pitching. Provus is always great and had two great tidbits: Lewis is starting at 3rd and there are going to be 10-15 over the air broadcasts this season.

    That’s an interesting question. Based on past history he will be brought up when the bat is ready regardless of his ability with the glove.

    I don’t know what the exact answer is other than guys shouldn’t be learning new positions in the big leagues and that is happening far too often with the Twins. Taking a global view of this I would say the Twins haven’t drafted and developed one plus defender under Falvey. Maybe that’s a fault of development or maybe it’s the profile of the player they tend to draft which have often been bat first guys that lack upside with the glove.

    This. Martin was rough in the OF because he has a poor arm, gets bad jumps and takes bad routes. Could that improve - maybe but the more likely thing is he just isn’t good not that he didn’t get enough reps.

    Yep. That would be an optimal outcome for this season and future years.

    Disagree. They tried their hardest not to play Miranda at third last but injuries forced them to. Castro could play there of course but that takes away his versatility. And good luck to you if you are handing second base to Julien Martin or Eeles.
