  1. The Twins obviously believe in framing as they contort their catchers stance. He’s not a great receiver but I would let him go back to a traditional crouch behind the plate. His blocking and throwing would improve and framing would be the same.
  2. The Polanco trade has been the gift that keeps on giving for Twins Daily writers.
  3. That makes sense as Vasquez didn’t look in on the play which you are supposed to do if it’s a hit and run. Watching Martin learn the fundamentals of baseball has been frustrating.
  4. Good win. Ober struggled but still produced a good start. Might be the best compliment you can offer: give your team a chance when it’s not your day.
  5. If it’s a hit and run the runner is supposed to look in to see what the hitter did. The only time you don’t look in is on a straight steal with no contact. If Vasquez left on a straight steal I don’t know what to say. Either way another bonehead play.
  6. Another bonehead play. Let’s see how many outs we can give Texas.
  7. I do. At this point in the game and at his point in his career I don’t want him trying to outsmart the opposition.
  8. No way that was called by Rocco. Just another bonehead play by a Twins player.
  9. Margot reminds me of Farmer in that they were brought in to fill an important back up role and neither did. He’s been barely passable with the bat even being platooned and his fielding has been disappointing. Twins might get lucky on Doncon.
  10. It ain’t gonna get any easier. Buck to the IL so we are going to be seeing plenty of Margot/Martin. Maybe Julien will provide a spark.
  11. I think you have a valid point. This FO values the bat almost exclusively and worries about where they will play later. Perhaps this is the correct strategy as it is certainly based on a ton of research. But it is also clear why we don’t have many plus defenders coming from our system. I agree with you that Royce should be a plus defender somewhere but it won’t be SS.
  12. I’m just amazed at the improvement since he first came up. I suspect that we skip over the player when we quote developmental success but it’s pretty clear he will do anything to get better. His first year as a starter I would have bet any amount he would never be a successful big leaguer in any fashion and now he is downright dominant out there. He knows it too. When he takes the mound he has an aura about him like “this won’t take long”. Never thought I would say this but I think I have more confidence in Jax than Durán. Anyway full credit to this guy. What Twin can you remember that has improved this much?
  13. I just want the Twins to give actual consideration to defense in determining where people play. Scouts have projected Brooks Lee to be an elite third baseman. If that is true then put him there and have elite defensive production. Of course he has to hit and we don’t really know that yet. Main point: put players in positions where they can be plus defenders. Royce is an athlete so the variety of plays at second base would fit in with his overall athleticism. I’m not worried about him getting hurt there as the takeout slide isn’t a thing anymore. Of all his injuries only one occurred in the field anyway. Left field is certainly a need for the club and he would have the ability to be a plus defender- think Alex Gordon. By doing this you start putting together a team that can play elite defense and experience far fewer “what the hell happened there” plays.
  14. I thought waiver claims went by leagues? You have NL teams listed ahead of the Twins. Did this rule change?
  15. Or we could have added a starter in the off season and our chances of making the playoffs would be better.
  16. I agree with you. Except I don’t care about next year or the year after that (right now). I want to make the playoffs.
  17. Fantastic John. Many happy returns. I like how you use the term “courting” or “courtship”. Makes me think you picked her up in an Edsel.
  18. Upon further reflection I would sign him with the understanding that he is going to St Paul as insurance. Depending on offers this may not be a possibility but if he would do it why not. Some of these young pitchers have already reached their career high in innings. It would come as no surprise that their performance could suffer from fatigue. Last year Ober got a rest for this reason.
  19. I think the Twins hope that he can get back and show he’s a capable starter so they can deal him and shed the $7.5 million in salary. He’s really not done that much.
  20. The time to add starting pitching depth was last off season. The Twins have made their bed - let’s roll with the young guys and see how it works out. There is value in the young guys gaining experience for next year even if we miss the playoffs.
  21. Great debut for Mathews. He looked the part and handled himself well. Winder with another excellent 2 inning stint. If he can continue to pitch close to this level that will be a huge unexpected boost for the pen.
  22. I didn’t say they couldn’t just that history would suggest two pitchers with no MLB experience are likely to struggle enough that it might cost us a playoff spot this year. Obviously I hope I’m wrong.
