  1. Goodness sakes Tonkin is slow to the plate
  2. Why would you move Festa to the bullpen? His rotation spot would go to a worse pitcher. He’s also not pitched out of the pen. The premise makes no sense.
  3. Festa deserved better. Brooks good play gets canceled out by two poor plays.
  4. Could not agree more. It’s gotta get fixed before next year
  5. Why didn’t Santana extend his arm / stretch on that play?
  6. Thanks for writing these - always interesting. There is lots of Twins history. One idea for a story would be to write about how the Cuban players the Twins had actually got here. I bet that would be something.
  7. I said teams not the Twins. Here is what I know for sure: if you collect a bunch of bad pitchers because you don’t want to invest in the pen then don’t be surprised when you get crappy performance.
  8. You have a camera in your bedroom? What is your day job?
  9. Nobody is saying you have to hand out $10 million contracts. There is a large middle ground to be explored. Teams hand out good contracts to starters who bust all the time. Then it’s called a cost of doing business. If it’s a reliever than it’s some sort of brain dead decision that means the gm should be fired (in the Pagan example he probably should be as that signing is from outer space.
  10. In both cases Kepler and Margot anticipated being held and started slowing. The runner has one job in these situations- run as hard as you can and pick up the third base coach for a sign. Neither runner executed properly. Now both decisions by Watkins were horrible and he certainly has a checkered past in this area but in both cases nobody did their job. Which is not surprising- the Twins are not good at basic fundamental parts of the game.
  11. Thank you. This whole story of relievers are so volatile and risky that you should never invest in them drives me nuts. You know what else is risky? Having a bullpen filled with crappy arms. You saved money but you accepted performance risk. You didn’t waste money and oh by the way your pen sucks. If you want to say the back end of pens are volatile- fine but that is because they are almost exclusively bad pitchers so of course they are volatile.
  12. His at bats against Sale last night were very good. He didn’t really chase and he competed hard - the 97 under the hands didn’t seem to bother him. Give him a shot at playing every day. This lineup needs a jolt and this is one of the few moves they have to achieve said jolt.
  13. I think this is part of the mess. Watkins assumed Max would get to third much quicker than he did. Max is a conservative guy when it comes to putting it out there. For example he may dive for sinking liners less than any other good outfielder I’ve seen. Having said all that this isn’t the first time Watkins has pulled the old split second stop and go. More confusion over there than there should be.
  14. I’m confused after reading this article. Why would the Twins keep a reliever as good as Mariano Rivera in AAA?
  15. Spot on. The job isn’t even the same as it was pre Falvey.
  16. This is spot on. I will add that I wish all the reps he was getting at SS in the minors would have included far more reps in CF where he is pretty rough. As TK always said you don’t know what you have until they have 1000-1500 at bats.
  17. I was thinking about that. Neither believes in their throwing arm and it shows especially when things get tight.
  18. They just have to play cleaner baseball. It seems like they give away a game per week with sloppy play. And it’s not a new thing - it’s been that way for a couple years now. IF they make the playoffs you cannot give away a game in a playoff series due to sloppy play or you will be out.
  19. Stings to waste a good start from a rookie pitcher. Julien is not a good fielder and he knows it. This really makes his yips in the field more challenging. I’m wrong plenty but stated numerous times that Julien and a prospect should have been dealt for a controllable starter last winter while his trade value was high.
  20. Especially with one out. Glass half full is he put pressure on the defense. Half empty is he is going to get thrown out on that play too much of the time.
  21. And Kiriloff s rehab has been halted again due to back soreness.
  22. As noted above Martin is starting to hit some. He is still rough in the OF (don’t get me started on why he played SS endlessly in the minors) but I would run him out there instead of Margot every time. Gleeman had an interesting note: Larnach has been killing cutters. Both homers last night were off cutters. Apparently the Cards don’t have an analytics department.
  23. Savvy play by Vasquez. He correctly guessed the contact play was on and figured the runner might be leaning. He was coming out of his crouch as the pitch was on its way so he was really quick getting the ball out.
